Questions & Answers

Shopper : will it work with Handucam sony - HDR XE260?MARY S : I was the shopper who asked this question. I didn't get a response, so I purchased the item anyway. IT DOESN'T WORK WITH THE HANDICAM SONY -HDR XE260
Shopper : Where does it mount to the HandyCam?G J : On my Sony DCR-TRV480 HandyCam there is an elongated black plastic flap/door on the front of the right side of the camera. Open the door (it pulls down) and there are 3 types of sockets for 3 types of cables. The socket for this AV cable is a round hole with a yellow ring around it. It is the top socket of the 3 and is the only one that is round. It is the same size (this size is called "Mini") as the earphone socket found on most portable audio devices (boom boxes, MP3 players, transistor radios). Only thing is this socket has an additional 4th contact inside of it to handle the video signal that is outputted by the Camera. A standard earphone socket will only have 3 contacts (one for the right channel sound, one for the left channel sound and one for the "ground" or "common" return circuit that is shared by both the left and right channels). If you look at the right side of the Camera, the side where the video tape cassette rides and the side where the hand grip belt and pad attaches, the door is at the front end. Also note that the pin on the angled end of the AV cord is divided into 4 segments. 3 segments are to handle the 3 signals (left audio, right audio, and video) and the 4th is to handle common return circuit for them.BOB M : It mounts right on top of the camcorder. It slides in what they call a shoe, which is two grooves on top of the camcorder, then you spin on knob on the mic to tighten it.RYAN L : The active interface shoe is on the top of the camcorder. It is underneath a little plastic door that keeps the connection covered when not in use.
Steve N : Can this be used with other camcorders such as a Canon?RYAN L : Pretty sure the answer is no. The shoe has Sony's 'Active' connector which is cool because it lets the camera control the mic (eg mic zoom matches camera zoom) but the limitation is it's non-standard.

About Sony EC-MHGZ1

Bring the audio in your videos to life with the ECM-HGZ1 shotgun microphone fromSony. Used with a compatible Handycam camcorder, the ECM-HGZ1 synchronizes the audio to the camcorder's zoom for audio that is distinct for both modes.

In telephoto mode, the microphone focuses on the audio straight ahead of it, isolating the subject matter. In wide-angle mode, the microphone broadens is recording range, so no sound occurring in frame is missed.

The ECM-HGZ1 is designed to work with your camcorder's Active Interface Shoe, so it is easy to connect and simple to use. It is powered by the camcorder, so there is no need for a separate battery.
