A notable step up from the Sony F5 CineAlta camera, the Sony F55 CineAlta offers more options for high-frame rate shooting and the full array of color filters found in Sony's flagship F65 camera. Equipped with Sony's 4K Super 35mm CMOS sensors and offering lens compatibility with all of the FZ-mount lenses (with third-party adapters), a wide dynamic range, a global shutter to eliminate rolling-shutter skew and flash banding, the F55 delivers spectacular native 4K images.

Although, cosmetically the PMW-F5 and the PMW-F55 camera systems are similar, there are a number of key internal differences. The most talked about difference is that the F55 has shares its color filter array with the F65 while the F5 has is the same as the F3. The F55 means more options for high-frame-rate shooting with an increase to 240 fps at 2K RAW 16-bit linear vs. 120fps with the F5 when using the AXS-R5 recorder. The F55 supports 3G-SDIx4 which connects the F55 to the Sony PVM-X300 4K 30" LCD monitor for live 4K monitoring up to 60p. The F55 also contains a global shutter on the imager to help eliminate rolling-shutter skew and flash banding. Sony boasts that the F55 eliminates rolling-shutter distortions and flash banding.

The Sony F55 can handle multiple recording formats including HD/2K/4K on SxS memory and 16-bit RAW 2K/4K on AXSM media. The F55 can record the following formats - MPEG-2 HD422, MPEG4 SSIP, XAVC 2K/HD, XAVC QHD/4K and 16-bit RAW 2K/4K. AXSM media is easilyt attached to the F55 with the optional bolt-on AXS-R5.
