Almost perfect, but not quite.

The camera itself is pretty fantastic. The menu on the camera is terrible and the available accessories are lacking. But it's an excellent alternative to the GoPro.

Wasn't what I was told it was

Do not like the features or the way the camera works. Needs a lot of accessories that I was unaware of.

Great product. A little outdated?

Great camera. Great stabilization. Great picture quality. Wish there was a newer model with a bigger sensor.

Overheats

My first brand new unit would overheat after only a few minutes of recording. I did not have it inside the waterproof case and it was about 40 degrees outside (we were hunting). I had it replaced with another brand new unit that did the exact same thing. I even did a recording test and placed it next to my HDR-AS50. The HDR-AS50 ran about an hour an a half before the battery died. The FDX-X3000 powered off in 9 minutes of recording.

Good Camera Battery Life Terrible

I really love the FDR-X3000 it has an awesome picture and great ease of use and has no equal with the image stabilization and image quality. But the battery life is the worse. Maybe one 15 min shoot or one time lapse. I have not yet make a determination of how long they actually last.

Horrible camera, worst video I have ever had.

This camera is the worst camera I have ever had. It is very tough to figure out but even after I think I did and took it on vacation to Cuba which gave me pictures and video. I could not figure why the video was the same that I have had since 15 years ago, there was no 1080 clarity or 4K whatsoever in the least, I changed many of the settings to try and see if I was the problem and I changed the camera back to 1080 from 4K and it was still like video from a camera for 15 years ago, all the changes were made to the camera took video and photos and in low light it was like a camera I had 20 years ago. No support trying to find something in the the instructions doesn't help. My Olympus TOUGH camera is better than this camera and I can hear under the water noises with it. So have someone call me before I begin to bad mouth your product.

Lasted 30 days.

After 30 days, the mounting point broke off. I sent it in for repair and it came back completely out of focus. Now it has to go back again, shipped at my expense.

Updated review...

I'm man enough to admit when he was wrong and well....I was wrong. My first review I talked about only having this for six months and two recording when suddenly it would no longer recognize the memory cards. It was because I was inserting them backwards. This is the first camera (stills or video) that I have had that the memory card clicks in easily no matter which way the contacts go which left me no reason (as far as I'm concerned lol) to think it was backwards. Anyway, this is an outstanding camera (I love more than the GoPro I used to use) and would recommend it to any and everyone!

Perfect until it wasn't...

Although I've only used this a couple of times (went from GoPro to this due to image stabilization in camera) the results were better than GoPro BUT only after my second time using the camera it now will not recognize my microSDXC cards and it's only been 6 months since purchase but that is also past the warranty agreement. So now I'm going to be stuck paying more money if I want to fix it leaving me with a tough decision on whether to pull that trigger or just go back to GoPro. I hope others do not run into this problem and they get their money's worth. Thank you Sony and I'm sorry GoPro peeps!

First video camera...very impressed

I bought this for travel. I received it last minute before a trip to Hawaii. I didn't have enough time to figure out all the features available. Despite this I did figure out enough to get some great footage. Things l like: - size: this fits in my pocket and can easily be taken anywhere. - remote: comes in really handy to take shots remotely - quality: the 4k footage is stunning. My wife still can't believe how great it all looks. The still shots are great as well. - backpack accessory: this is great. I've used it a bunch of times. - BOSS: this is was the feature that made me go with SONY over the competition. I've been really happy and never regretted my choice. - accessories: standard screw to attach accessories so it is pretty easy to get what ever you need. Things that could use work: - interface: it is okay. I could figure it out without much difficulty but my wife just hands it to me. I guess if you are happy with just one setting you wouldn't have to change things much and it wouldn't matter but I like to alter the frames per second, especially when getting shots of the dog. - remote: it is finicky. It works most of the time but can take longer than expected to connect. - software: the Playmemories is not the best. There are better choices. Watch the memory cards you buy. Most aren't capable of writing the maximum resolution. The guy at the camera store sold me a bunch of cards that weren't fast enough. Also, I've had some issues with cards bigger than 32GB downloading the videos. Overall, this is a great little camera. I've been very happy with my choice and would highly recommend this to a friend.

Sony FDR-X3000 Specifications

About Sony FDR-X3000

Sony FDR-X3000 4K with Balanced Optical SteadyShot.

4K movies. Less shake.
See how Action Cam opens spectacular new vistas with mesmerizing, 4K high quality and steady action. Capture your best moves in unforgettable 4K movies.

Reduced shake with Balanced Optical SteadyShot
This feature is an advanced form of image stabilization where internally, the camera's lens and sensor are joined and moved together to compensate for camera shake caused by excessive motion, whether shooting handheld with optional accessories or during a fast-paced sporting activity. This is a particularly effective technology when paired with a POV action camera design as it ensures captured video footage is smooth and stable - even in 4K or high-frame-rate shooting modes.

Exmor R CMOS sensor with enhanced sensitivity - Shoot in the dark with very subtle light using this cutting-edge sensor.

BIONZ X image processor - Record fast moves and smooth action up to 4K at 100 Mbps.

ZEISS Tessar lens - Capture landscapes with less distortion.

The FDR-X3000 utilizes full pixel readout without pixel binning technology to produce exceptionally high resolution and accurate colors in both 4K and Full HD videos. This allows it to read and process data from all of the sensor's pixels, producing highly detailed video content with minimal noise and 'jaggies' in a variety of formats including the high data stream XAVC S codec (100Mbps in 4K and 50Mbps in Full HD).

The FDR-X3000 can also shoot 120p in Full HD for impressive slow-motion footage. This camera offers a new angle of view adjustment, with a 3x smooth zoom or preset "wide", "medium" and "narrow" settings. This allows shooters to get even closer to the action during movie recording, and reduces barrel distortion common with wide view POV cameras.

Built-In Stereo Mic
The FDR-X3000 has a built-in stereo mic with wind noise reduction to reduce the impact of wind interference on overall audio quality, and is equipped with stereo microphone input for advanced recording.

Time-lapse Capture
The FDR-X3000 includes a unique Time-lapse Capture feature that shoots still images in pre-set intervals that can later be transformed into a stunning 4K time-lapse movie utilizing the Action Cam Movie Creator software. The Action Cam App can also create time-lapse movies in Full HD.

Built-in GPS
Built-in GPS inherited from previous models is available, allowing location tracking and speedometer to be added to the video file when Action Cam Movie Creator is used. This also allows GPS Data Overlay on video to read your speed data and generate another video file that includes your route, speed information, etc.

Highlight Movie Maker
An updated version Sony's own in-built movie creator - Highlight Movie Maker - is available in the FDR-X3000. The innovative feature, which now utilizes face detection technology, automatically assembles footage into a video highlight package and pairs it with custom music for the ultimate viewing experience.

Advanced Features
For the more advanced user, there are an expanded scope of manual controls and setting adjustments including white balance, and auto exposure shifting. Loop recording is also available, allowing users to maximize usage of available memory card space to ensure they get the exact shot they are looking for.

Rugged shielding for real-world conditions - For shooting as unlimited as your imagination
You're ready to shoot with the right protection. The Action Cam body alone is splashproof and freezeproof, and supplied Underwater Housing is dustproof, shockproof and waterproof to 197 ft/60m.

Customize and build Action Cam for your needs
A new range of accessories for Action Cam are also available (each sold separately), including the Finger Grip (AKA-FGP1) that is an ideal travel accessory as it enables flexible one-handed shooting and the MC Protector (AKA-MCP1) for extra protection from lens scratches and dirt.
