Not a professional product.

On paper this appeared to be the perfect camera for me. I mostly take stills but also work for a production company that uses all Sony cameras. So being able to easily match colour with those cameras was a bonus. However the video functionality is just not up to the standard of a professional product. The FX2 cannot switch between PAL and NTSC and is locked to one or the other, so is useless to most professionals who have to provide different standards to different clients. The response from Sony below is out of date. Sony purposefully removed the ability to change between PAL and NTSC frame rates in a subsequent firmware update. (Although their website and marketing material still says it can do both) Even the most basic consumer cameras and all cameras from competing manufacturers can switch between standards, so as much as I like this camera I am returning it and the lenses I bought with it to buy another brand. I imagine the company I work for will no longer be buying Sony cameras if Sony are prepared to render it useless to us with firmware "updates".

Useful and handy, but pricy

Very useful and handy for hand heled work with my FX2. I wish the price was a bit cheaper.

Extremely underrated camera!

I traded in an FX3 and A7s3 for three of these. I thought I would miss the high ISO performance. I have not. I shot a wedding and the footage looks just fine for the dark dance floor. The autofocus that most people have described as just "better" is a big improvement. It is noticeably smarter. All three would lock on the subject, never lose them, and never jump to people in the background. Moving from a person to a dog - it locked on the eyes instantly. Really a phenomenal improvement. The new stabilization mode does have quite the crop but it's 100% worth it. I was able to get handheld shots at 150mm that were perfectly stable. It was about 60 degrees but I shot up to 45 minutes in 4K and had zero overheating problems. Not even a warning. Shutter angle and the ability to jam sync timecode make it my favorite camera I've ever captured a wedding with. Almost forgot the viewfinder - it rocks. I was surprised how much my second shooters and I enjoyed using it. Especially in bright sunlight. If you put a shotgun mic on, you can't turn the viewfinder upward. That's fine - we got used to that almost immediately. If I want the ability to turn the viewfinder upward, I'm sure I could find an alternative mic or connection point that would allow it.

Don't listen to the influencers!

Great camera, the trade-in process was very easy. Got a good deal trading in some old equipment for this new FX2 kit. Been using it for a while and the images are amazing.

This was made for me

There is a lot of discontent on the internet when it comes to this camera but I personally love it!!! Sure if you're waiting for this the fx3 II, then this was a blow, however, this camera wasn't made for you. It was made for me. Somebody who upgraded from the a74, who had overheating issues, who ended up making videos more than taking photos, somebody who just learning about filmmaking or cinematography. I wanted to get into the cine-line but wanted to stay in the full frame cameras, the fx3 was too much. But what Sony gave was the perfect camera for me! An intro into the fine line, full frame and gave me stills to take pictures of my grandson and family. Now I can get good on this and then upgrade to the Sony fx3 II and hen that comes out.

About Sony FX2

The Sony FX2 blends together some of the best features on both Sony’s Cinema lineup and their Alpha Mirrorless lineup into a single, compact, full-frame camera. Starting with an impressive 33-megapixel full-frame sensor ensures that this camera produces photos that are as impressive as its video, making it an excellent choice for hybrid creators. 4K60p footage and 15+ stops of dynamic range give videographers the features they need to create excellent cinema-quality footage, while a BIONZ XR processor and dedicated AI processing unit deliver some of the most impressive autofocus performance of any camera on the market. When you’re looking for a camera that can do it all, consider the FX2.

33 Megapixel Sensor

The FX2 comes equipped with a 33-megapixel back-illuminated full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor that delivers excellent resolution for photos and video. Compared with other dedicated cinema cameras, the FX2 stands out as an excellent hybrid option for creators. The sensor is paired with Sony’s BIONZ XR processor, which enables quick processing and fast autofocus speeds. A dedicated AI processing unit substantially improves the already impressive Sony autofocus system and allows for recognition and tracking of humans, animals, birds, insects, vehicles, trains, and aircraft while maintaining tack-sharp focus even when the subject leaves the frame or the scene gets busy. Sony states that compared to the FX3 and FX30, the FX2’s human and animal eye recognition is improved by 30%.

33 Megapixel Sensor

Oversampled 4K Footage

At 4K30p, the FX2 captures approximately 7K worth of data to downsample to 4K. This results in sharper footage, with less moiré, less noise, and greater detail than native 4K shooting. When higher frame rates are needed, the FX2 can shoot 4K60p with a Super 35 crop. The FX2 also comes equipped with a Variable FPS setting that is ideal for both slow and fast motion, and that mode can also de-squeeze 1.3x and 2.0x anamorphic footage all in-body without the need for post-processing. An Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) also comes built-in to the FX2, which suppresses moiré patterns and false colors when shooting high-frequency or repetitive textures in video.

Dual Base ISO

When the ambient light drops, many productions keep the cameras rolling. The FX2 utilizes a Dual Base ISO that maximizes image quality regardless of the light. When shooting in S-Log3, Base ISO settings of 800 and 4000 minimize noise and maintain dynamic range, allowing creators to capture higher-quality footage in any lighting conditions.

Dual Base ISO
15+ Stops of Dynamic Range in S-Log3

15+ Stops of Dynamic Range in S-Log3

When shooting in S-Log3, the FX2 is capable of handling over 15 stops of dynamic range, which is ideal for creators capturing footage in challenging lighting conditions. You can also import preset LUTs into the camera to preview footage that more closely matches the final look before post-production. Sony’s S-Cinetone color profile offers extensive flexibility, outstanding color reproduction, and seamless integration with other pro-level Sony cinema cameras.

5-Axis Image Stabilization

5-Axis Image Stabilization

5-Axis Image Stabilization is built into the FX2, reducing camera shake when shooting handheld. For those shooting on the move, Active and Dynamic Active Stabilization modes can further smooth movement while walking or moving without a gimbal, allowing you to capture more stable footage without the need for advanced stabilization devices. Additionally, when paired with compatible Sony lenses, the in-camera stabilization is improved.

Built-In EVF & Vari-Angle LCD

Unlike most other cinema cameras, the FX2 comes with a built-in 3.68m-Dot 0.7x OLED Electronic Viewfinder that helps creators see their footage in bright environments. It also features a 1.03m-Dot Rear Vari-Angle Touchscreen that is fully articulating and can be used at many different angles to support the creator in nearly any situation.

Built-In EVF & Vari-Angle LCD

Active Cooling

An in-camera cooling fan enables the FX2 to record continuously without overheating, a feature many hybrid cameras struggle with. This means it is extremely well-suited for interviews, conferences, weddings, live events, or any other type of long-form production where it’s essential to keep the camera rolling.

Active Cooling

Pro Recording Formats

10-bit 4:2:2 video using both All-Intra and Long GOP compression options gives creators flexibility between retaining the most detail for editing and smaller file sizes. The FX2 also supports Cine El, Cine El Quick, and Flexible ISO to best suit the shooting style of each project.

Connections & Ports

The FX2 comes equipped with a full-size HDMI Type-A port that can output 16-bit RAW video to compatible external recorders for viewing.

Two different card slots are used, including slot one, which supports both CFexpress Type A and UHS-II SD cards, while slot 2 is dedicated specifically for UHS-II and UHS-I SD cards.

Timecode synchronization support makes it easy for the FX2 to blend seamlessly into professional multi-camera productions. Wireless streaming is available over Wi-Fi at 2.4/5 GHz, or 5 GB/s via USB-C connection. A USB-C port delivers PD fast charging or LAN link using a gigabit Ethernet adapter, and a multi-interface hot shoe, micro-USB port, and 3.5mm mic and headphone jacks are also available. Finally, the FX2 is also compatible with the XLR-H1 Handle Unit that gives creators expanded control and audio options.

Connections & Ports

FX2 vs FX3

The FX2 and FX3 are both excellent cameras, and the FX2 really excels at hybrid shooting thanks to its 33-megapixel sensor, compared to just 12.1 megapixels in the FX3. The FX2 also has its own dedicated AI Processor, which helps improve autofocus speed and accuracy. On the other hand, the FX3 is designed as a true cinema camera, features video resolutions up to 4K120p, and its lower-resolution sensor also has a slight edge in low-light performance. The choice ultimately comes down to the creator, but most hybrid shooters will want to choose the FX2, while video-only shooters will enjoy the FX3's improved features.

A new versatile tool for cinematic expression
As a gateway into a professional filmmaking career, the FX2 is a full-frame camera in the Cinema Line that inherits the visual philosophy of Sony's top-level VENICE series. Adopting the compact design, user interface, expandability, and reliability synonymous with Sony Cinema Line, it's ideal for solo shooting, and introduces enhanced still image functions designed to support filmmaking.

Professional cinematic look

For that professional cinematic look
The FX2 is the newest Cinema Line camera, designed to support professional filmmaking. By combining the high image quality of a full-frame sensor with cinematic and expressive tools modelled on Sony's flagship VENICE 2 cinema camera, you have all the tools you need to bring your creative visions to life.

Cinematic expression with a full-frame sensor
The full-frame FX2 delivers stunning cinematic imagery, blending high resolution with beautiful bokeh. Equipped with a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor supported by our BIONZ XR image processing engine and advanced AI processing unit, the camera offers high sensitivity, wide latitude, and 33 MP resolution, giving ambitious cinematic visionaries everything they need.

Outstanding image quality for maximum editing flexibility
The FX2's full-frame sensor produces footage with smooth, natural gradations thanks to 15+ stops of latitude when recording with S-Log, ensuring even high-contrast scenes are captured in full detail. Base ISO for S-Log3 capture can be set to 800 or 4000, and the camera supports S-Gamut3/S-Gamut3.Cine color gamuts for broad compatibility. It all adds up to make editing more efficient when shooting with multiple cameras.

Log recording modes for production flexibility
For creative flexibility, there are three modes available for Log recording - Flexible ISO, Cine EI, and Cine EI Quick - with Cine EI widely used in professional filmmaking on footage that requires more intensive work in post-production. Based on the shooting environment, choose a base ISO of either 800 or 4000 to maintain maximum latitude throughout the shoot, allowing specific tonal ranges to be enhanced in post production to achieve your desired cinematic look.

Multiple recording formats for versatile shooting and editing
7K oversampling is used with full pixel readout and no pixel binning when shooting full-frame 4K (QFHD 3840 x 2160), and 4K 60p (59.94p) recording is available in Super 35mm mode. With 10-bit depth, 4:2:2 color sampling, an efficient MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec, and Intra recording including DCI-4K (4096 x 2160), outstanding quality is assured.

Import up to 16 user LUTs
With the FX2, LUTs can be imported and applied to the LCD monitor and the electronic viewfinder while shooting or playing back movies. Up to 16 user LUT files can be imported from memory cards or Sony's Creators' Cloud and selected as needed. The LUT used for recording can then be embedded in the video metadata for post-production.

Create moods right in the camera
Picture Profile presets make it easy to adjust color and gradation to create a variety of moods in camera. These include the invaluable S-Cinetone, which produces beautiful skin tones. Imported user LUTs can be registered as PPLUT 1 to 4 and applied during recording, and an expanded range of 12 Creative Look profiles, including FL2 and FL3, offers a comprehensive selection of visual moods for many recording needs.

Desqueeze display for anamorphic lenses
Anamorphic lenses are a popular choice for creating a distinctly cinematic look. The FX2 is equipped with a desqueeze display mode that allows monitoring in the standard CinemaScope aspect ratio of 2.93:1 while shooting with anamorphic lenses. It offers 1.3x and 2.0x desqueeze settings, and Sony's Monitor & Control app provides even more detailed settings for monitoring on a tablet or other external display devices.

Frame rate freedom
An FPS menu inherits features from Cinema Line higher-end models, including a [Variable] setting that allows intuitive frame-rate control: up to 2.5x slow motion at 4K resolution, or up to 5x slow motion when recording in Full HD at up to 120 fps.

An extensive range of expressive E-mount lenses
Sony offers a range of more than 70 high-performance E-mount lenses, including ultra-wide angles, super telephoto zooms, exquisite primes and powered zooms. Combine with Sony original microphones for outstanding sound quality and choose from a variety of other accessories to bring your creative vision to life.

Solo shooting freedom

Designed for solo shooting
Combining video features from current Cinema Line cameras with enhanced functions for stills that support filmmaking, the FX2 is designed to handle solo shooting in a wide range of circumstances, giving you maximum flexibility.

Compact and lightweight with built-in accessory mount points
With the same compact flat-top design as the Cinema Line FX3 and FX30, the FX2 is ideal for handheld shooting as well as gimbal and drone mounting. The magnesium alloy exterior has 1/4-20 (UNC) screw holes in three locations for mounting accessories, and two additional screw holes are located on the bottom panel for secure tripod mounting.

AI-based Real-time Recognition AF
Equipped with a powerful AI processing unit, the FX2 is capable of Real-time Recognition AF for humans, animals, birds, vehicles and even insects. A detection frame indicates the recognized subject and tracking can be initiated simply by touching the subject on the monitor screen. Advanced human pose estimation technology accurately recognizes subject movement, and human eye recognition has been improved by about 30% compared to the FX3/FX30.

Fine-tuned focus control
AF Assist allows seamless switching to manual focus for smooth focus transitions, while a range of 7 autofocus transition speed settings and 5 sensitivity settings offer detailed control. Focus Map makes it easier to visualize depth of field by overlaying focus info on the live view display, and the Breathing Compensation function can significantly enhance image stability.

Automatic framing using advanced AI
The FX2's Auto Framing feature automatically crops and tracks a subject to keep them in a prominent position when the camera is mounted on a tripod, producing footage that looks like it was shot by an experienced operator. The Framing Stabilizer function automatically keeps the subject in the same position within the frame, which can be useful, for example, when the camera operator is moving alongside the subject.

Stabilization for dynamic handheld shooting
Active Mode boosts stabilization while walking and shooting. For even faster paced shooting, there's Dynamic active Mode, which utilizes electronic stabilization for as much as 30% greater effect, making it possible to shoot stable footage even when running around. Corresponding stabilization metadata is embedded in the footage for efficient post production.

Stills at the flip of a switch
A single switch selects MOVIE or STILL mode and instantly recalls all the corresponding settings. In addition to providing 33 MP resolution and continuous bursts at up to 10 fps, the camera is equipped with a [Creating still images from Shot Marks] function that allows you to snap stills while recording or playing video that has a previously imported user LUT.

Visual consistency across stills and videos
The Log mode is also available for stills, making it possible to shoot JPEG and HEIF still images with the S-Log3 gamma curve used during a video shoot, so the same workflow can be easily applied during post production. Transform your stills in editing applications such as Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, ready for a variety of uses while maintaining the same look.

Operability for filmmaking

Operability for professional filmmaking
The FX2 is designed for maximum operability during professional use, supporting a smooth workflow throughout production.

Tiltable high-definition electronic viewfinder
Keep focused on shooting even in bright or distracting environments, thanks to an OLED viewfinder with approximately 3.68 million dots. Magnification is 0.70x (50mm lens, infinity focus, -1m-1 diopter), and the angle of view and eyepoint are optimized for video recording. The viewfinder itself can be rotated from 0 Degree to +90 Degree for easy viewing at just about any angle, and the eye cup can be removed or reversed left-to-right as necessary.

Frequently used parameters all in one place
The FX2 inherits the BIG6 (Home) screen from high-end CineAlta cameras such as VENICE, which allows you to easily monitor six essential parameters in MOVIE mode: FPS (frame rate), ISO, Shutter (speed/angle), Aperture or ND Filter, Look, and White Balance. The BIG6 (Home) screen contributes to smooth, intuitive operation, and provides quick access to Variable/Fixed parameters.

Effective heat management
Enjoy uninterrupted video recording time for formats up to 4K 59.94p. Heat buildup is prevented through a combination of an internal cooling fan, a highly thermal conductive graphite material used in the image stabilization unit, and an innovative design that allows ample air intake even when the LCD monitor is closed. The cooling fan has three modes that can be selected according to shooting conditions: Auto, Minimum, and Off while Recording.
