Great design and amazing sound quality. However, this device doesn't support any of the major streaming services, what makes it rather anachronic when it was supposed to be the next big thing. Lack of streaming support is the one thing that kills its appeal to me.

Have it for 6 months, connected to Focal 836 now, previously to Sony SS-HA1/B, sound quality is amazing from such a small package, not as great as 700W Krell, but nevertheless excellent, drives Focals with authority detail and depth, tight bass, shimmer where needed. Tried it with Infinity PR, JBL 4435, KEF LS50, Focal Scala, drove all the speakers in good manner, mind you I think Focal 836 are it's limits, steel beyond my expectations. On for 10hrs a day, music and TV, does excellent job as secondary system, if you are starting in HI-FI and have good speakers, get it, you will not be disappointed. One omission is no pre outs, as I use it to test drive my potential next speakers as a reference source and amp, to keep everything equal and easy to carry. Works wonders with my MDR-Z7. All around worth the price.

I bought the hi-res MP3 Player NWZ-ZX1 and subscribe to TIDAL, I love the sound so much, so I bought HAP-S1 to order to enjoy it without headphone, but I'm kind of disappointed that it doesn't work with TIDAL. when will HAP-S1 supports TIDAL?

30 hours to transfer (250gb, 32,500 songs most in MP4a, WAV and MP3 format) , using the "fast" method with an ethernet cable vs. wireless. It finally completed and I am now waiting on update of database to generate gracenote artwork, song info. I now want to know what I should expert for timing, hours, day, weeks???? The unit needs to be plugged into my router and powered on to do the update. I can pause the update and power down, but there is no song info or artwork. The joke is that I have artwork and song info for every song currently on Itunes, but the HAP does not grab any of that and recreates everything from scratch. Apparently very SLOOOOWWWWLY. Overseas tech support has hung up on me, sent me to multiple other numbers as a run-around and generally been useless. Before starting this transfer, I did sample the preloaded 10 or so HiREZ files that came with the unit and it sounded wonderful. Unfortunately, the file transfer/software wrecks the entire experience. For now, I am sitting here waiting for the update to complete so my review will remain 1 star. If the update ever is some (I am guessing it will be 3+ days...) I may raise my rating higher since I am hopeful that actual unit will be a great playback machine.

Since the MP3, I rarely listen to music seriously. But after hearing the Hi-Res I decided to buy a home and start a daily listening to music, those in the past to bring my surprise SONY back. I found that if through WIFI transfer music, best music stops playing, it will be more reliable. Thank SONY David Du

Sounds great, I compared this Sony HAP-S1 VS Shiit Befrost DAC with MAC, like a DAC and player, and I didn't notice to much difference, this Sony tens to have a warm sound with good body on the mids, The other comparison was, the amp section, this VS NAD, the results, I can live with the Sony while I change NAD; sounds very good! I wish it had a easy browser to connect a USB memory or HD in order to see the music archives, it just work for a expansion drive of the internal HD. I hope Sony add this functionality wit some software upgrade! The headphone output, I tested with a Grado RS1e, and the HAP-S1 took a lot of work to exitate this headphones, but it was different and better for this Sony the Beyerdinamics DT 880 PRO for Studio, sounds excellent! I was undecided whether expected the new Pioneers DACs A-70N, and A-50N, those are more opened on the features, I waited all the year to purchase this Sony, I'm very happy with the HAP-S1!

The HAP-S1 supports High-Resolution Audio formats such as DSD, FLAC, WAV and ALAC, as well as formats like MP3, iTunes AAC, ATRAC and Windows WMA - restoring their quality closer to that of the original.
How High-Resolution Audio works
Listen like you're in the recording studio
High-Resolution Audio works by converting analog sound to digital at a higher and more precise rate than CDs. High-Resolution Audio can have a rate of 24bit/96Hz, capturing more of the details and subtleties in your music. Hear your tracks exactly as they were recorded with no compromise on sound.
Restore all your compressed files
The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) upscales your compressed digital music files (MP3, ACC, ATRAC and WMA) close to CD quality. By restoring the high-range sound lost during compression, DSEE produces your digital music files in rich, natural sound, closer to the quality of the original recording.

High Resolution Audio
High-Resolution Audio takes your digital music to another level. By converting analog music to digital at a higher rate than CDs-24 bit/192 kHz, as opposed to the 16 bit/44.1 kHz rate of CDs-High-Resolution Audio delivers better-than-CD quality sound, so you get closer to the original studio master recording.
DSEE technology
DSEE technology upgrades the quality of your compressed music files. When an original music source is compressed, you lose the high frequency elements of your music. DSEE restores these elements to produce high quality sound that's closer to the original CD recording.
Front-mounted LCD display screen
You can navigate your entire collection with ease using the front-mounted LCD display screen. Alternately, you can download the dedicated smartphone app and manage your music from there.
Online database
By cross-referencing your music collection with the online database, the HDD Audio Player ensures that artist names and track titles are always up to date. The player also automatically adds song titles when you add music, so you'll never be confronted by unnamed mystery tracks.
Compatible formats
Listen to your entire collection, regardless file format. The HDD Audio Player supports a range of compressed and uncompressed file types, including FLAC, WAV, AIFF, DSD (DFF) and DSD (DSF).
Automatic file transfer
Whenever you add new music to your collection, the HDD audio player automatically copies the files from your PC to the player's on-board hard drive via LAN or Wi-Fi connection.
