If you rig this with an Atomos Inferno, you have a great high frame rate 4K shooter. Wide DR, high resolution, great controls - ready for HDR too.

I purchased the Sony NEX-FS700 R for a few reasons: • S&Q motion capabilities • Price • Upgrading from a Sony A7 • Additional inputs for sound mix • More options for setting within camera The picture is much clearer and the options in menu give a much broader range of settings and control in field. I am using an Atomos Ninja Blade for external recording for a 10 BIT ProRes 4.2.2 capture. The S&Q motion capabilities was probably one of the strongest selling points for me on this particular Sony unit.

It's remarkable that this camera first came out back in 2012 and has not only sold for this long, but remains competitive. The FS700R shoots good quality 1080P footage including slow and quick motion frame rates ranging from 1fps to 240 fps. At reduced resolutions it can do 480 and 960fps making it the slow motion king for all those without deep pockets. With the addition of an external recorder such as the Odyssey 7Q+ or Shogun Inferno you can add to that continuous 2K 120/240fps and continuous 4K at 60fps. It can even do 4K at 120fps in 4 sec burs!. With built-in ND and XLR and a host of lenses that can be used the old workhorse offers tremendous bang for the buck. It's basically a box with buttons all over it which is both good and bad. It's bad if you want to shoulder use it and will require significant rigging. But otherwise the design works fine. I hand hold it often. The fact that it uses the old Sony NP-F style batteries is really convenient since just about anyone in the business for a few years already has some. Now that it's discontinued and marked down I made the decision to buy a second one and let them carry me until I finally have to go to 6K or 8K. Since most deliverables are still in HD these days I hope the FS700R can serve me for several more years to come.

I bought the FS700R several years after the FS700 introduction, mainly due to the BIG price drop and the fact that despite being an older camera it can still hold it's own amidst newer arrivals. The super 35 sensor gives just the right amount of DOF, the E-mount lenses are affordable and relatively light. The slow motion capabilities are still the best for this price point. The ergonomics aren't good but I knew that going in. Basically it works fine on a tripod or OK handheld as long as you don't want to shoulder hold it which then requires a rig. The menus and controls are familiar Sony so it helps when using it with other Sony cameras such as EA50 or FS100. I've been happy with the internal AVCHD codec but if you do a lot of heavy post-color work you will probably want to pair it with an external recorder. Many people get the Odyssey 7Q+ for greatly expanded capabilities. I just bought an Atomos Shogun Inferno to allow 4K recording and higher bit-rate slow motion. Hopefully with this latest addition the FS700R will serve me for many more years to come. I may buy a second one if the price drops even more when it becomes discontinued.

I'm not crazy about the HD footage, but when you can pull out 4k this little camera shines! The kit video lens has butter smooth auto focus and the face tracking feature keeps run and gun shooters (like myself) runnning and gunning not tinkering with follow focus. Great buy as long as you can swing the additional ($) for the Q7 4k recorder. You are going to have to get a monitor anyway, might as well grab the Q7.

Great Studio Camera
By Barry C.
The Sony NEX-FS700RH 4K Sensor High Speed NXCAM Super35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Power Zoom Lens enables 4K/2K 12-bit RAW output, S-Log recording capabilities and features a Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS E-mount lens. The NEX-FS700RH retains all the features of the NEX-FS700U, including the native 4K sensor, Super Slow Motion recording, built-in ND filters and CineGamma curves. 4K/2K RAW is recorded to the Sony AXS-R5 Recorder via the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit, or to compatible third party recorders such as Convergent Design's Odyssey 7Q via the 3G/HD-SDI output. The HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and external recorders are sold separately.
The Super 35mm sized sensor matches that of standard film and digital cinema cameras. It accepts interchangeable E-mount lenses, as well as a variety of 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses and professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters. On-board, the NEX-FS700RH shoots full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, with bursts of up to 240 fps in full HD resolution and 960fps at lower resolutions. When used with the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and AXS-R5 Recorder, you can record continuous 2K RAW at up to 240fps and 4K RAW at up to 60fps. 120fps 4K RAW recording is possible in 4 second bursts. This makes the NEX-FS700RH a high-speed, 4K camera ready for professional shoots such as indie films, commercials, corporate videos and music videos.
You have the option of recording AVCHD footage onto SD cards, Memory StickDuo, or the HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit via the FMU port. It can also output 4:2:2 uncompressed HD video via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to an external recording unit. For enhanced exposure latitude, CineGamma curves, including S-Log and 800% 709 gamma curves are available. Other features include an ISO range of 320 to 64,000, a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound, a 3.5" LCD panel with detachable with viewfinder attachment and built-in ND filters.
The included Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 E-mount lens features an 11x zoom with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27-300mm. It has a quiet AF motor and Optical Steady Shot image stabilization and a three-step, motorized Adjustable Zoom Speed control. In addition to three variable zoom speeds, the lens supports constant speed zooming for slow, smooth zoom. Zoom can be controlled from the zoom lever on the NEX-FS700RH and by the standard control on the lens barrel.
