Review Summary

So far so good! I have been using this camera for a few weeks. I am very happy with the ease of use and image quality. This is my first A series frame so I was not sure what to expect. The build quality feels solid. It feels good in the hand, and I am loving the lens ecosystem.

Got a chance to see just how fast the camera is at a steer roping competition. I was shooting at ISO 1200 and 1/1000 secs. The camera caught horses chasing steers and cowboys throwing ropes. Everything was crystal clear and "frozen" in time.

Versatile camera. Pretty straightforward to learn and use. Needed the weather sealing in Iceland! Definitely recommend it.

So far so good. I'm still learning the ins and outs of the camera. It seems to have very good battery life and easily navigable menus as well as being light weight and comfortable to hold.

Just took it on a trip abroad. Worked well in all conditions. Still have to review picture quality, but suspect excellence.

Upgrading to the Sony a7 V has been a good move. I've always loved the 33MP resolution but the new partially stacked sensor makes everything feel incredibly snappy. The standout for me is the blackout-free 30fps burst shooting

I bought my A7IV when it was released and loved it. My photography has stepped up so much in the short time I've had this camera. I cannot recommend it enough!

The Sony Alpha A7V, can be described in single words that collectively describe my experience and enjoyment since my purchase through Adorama. Words like, jaw-dropping, intuitive, speed, precapture, excited, and satisfied. I was on the fence to purchase the A7V since I have the A7iii and A7iv, and did I really need to upgrade. We'll, the A7V not only met my expectations, it also blew everyone of them out of the water! Ever since the spec were confirmed I knew I had to pull the trigger. Using my Adorama card, the transaction was flawless, and I also receive my A7V in less than 48 hours! Immediately I bagan putting it to the test of Astrophotography, which was smooth as butter seemless from the A7iv experiences. Then onto the wildlife where the A7V shined like a champion! The Auto focus tracking, precapture, speed, and resolution are a match made in Sony heaven! I would recommend the A7V to anyone wanting the superiority of a top tier camera model priced at the mid level range!

After four years use, I upgraded from the Sony A7 IV, an excellent camera in its own right. Quite pleased with the new & improved features of the A7V, including shooting stills at 30 fps, higher video quality and the impressive reticulating screen.

Upgrading from the Sony a7 IV to the new a7 V has been totally worth it for me. I mostly photograph dogs and cats, and the autofocus/tracking feels quicker and more reliable-especially for wiggly pets and fast little movements-so I'm getting more keepers. Image quality is excellent, handling feels refined, and everything arrived fast and well-packed from Adorama.

Nothings perfect but God but as far as camera's go this one is amazing. As a previous owner of the a7iii and a7iv this cameras auto focus and tracking is excellent. I also currently own two Lumix cameras s5iix and the S1R11 each camera has their strengths and weaknesses. But as the honest YouTube creators say in this day and age all of these new mirrorless cameras are great. The only determining factor is need and price.

Sony’s flagship A7 V camera is the perfect workhorse for hybrid shooters and content creators worldwide. This highly anticipated camera is the successor to the ever-popular Sony A7 IV, and it comes loaded with the latest (and first) partially stacked sensor in a Sony camera and AI-based subject recognition technology borrowed from Sony’s other flagship cameras. Improvements to the autofocus system, as well as a new BIONZ XR2 Processor, give the A7 V improved autofocus, in-camera speeds, and overall performance. Finally, a user-friendly body offers an improved Electronic Viewfinder with a 120fps refresh rate and a fully articulating rear LCD screen.
The A7 V features a partially stacked 33-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS Full-Frame Sensor, making it the first Sony camera to feature a partially stacked sensor. This ultimately results in both faster readout speeds and reduced rolling shutter compared to the A7 IV. Image quality has also improved, offering up to 16 stops of dynamic range and a native ISO of 100-51200, and a faster max shutter speed of 1/16,000s.

To improve both speed and overall performance, Sony has tasked the BIONZ XR2 Processor with keeping things running smoothly when shooting. This processor utilizes the latest AI technology for improved subject recognition and tracking, along with better color and white balance accuracy as light rapidly changes throughout your scene.

The A7 V is as impressive for video as it is for photography, making it an excellent choice for content creators and hybrid shooters. Offering 7K-oversampled 4K 60p video recording and 4K 120p in crop mode, users can switch between photo and video capture without sacrificing quality. For those capturing longer recording sessions, a unique Sigma-shaped graphite heatsink is built into the unit, helping extend recording times without overheating. Blackout-free 30 fps continuous shooting and pre-capture are available for burst mode shooting, allowing you to capture images between 0.03-1.0 second before pressing the shutter. A Speed Boost function can be assigned to a custom button, such as the lens, allowing you to switch your continuous shooting frame rate to a faster one to ensure you don’t miss the moment as it happens.

With every new camera model, we expect autofocus and AI subject recognition to improve, and the Sony A7 V is no different. The A7 V borrows the AI-processing unit from Sony’s flagship models like the A7R V, A9 III, and A1 II to retain focus on your subject regardless of what you’re shooting and how fast you are moving. 94% of the sensor is covered by 759 autofocus points, and the sensor can focus down to -4 EV. When compared to its predecessor, the A7 V recognizes subjects such as birds and animals 30-50% faster, which can ultimately be the difference between getting the shot and missing focus altogether. Finally, Auto Subject Recognition means there is no need to select a subject type, so photographers who frequently switch between animals and humans no longer need to constantly adjust this setting to reflect their current subject.

Both screens have been vastly improved in the A7 V, starting with the 3.68m-Dot Electronic Viewfinder that offers 120fps playback. A 4-axis 3.2” 2.1m-dot LCD screen can be used when it isn’t practical to use the viewfinder, especially when shooting at odd angles or on a gimbal or other accessory. Two USB-C ports allow multiple accessories, charging ports, or data transfer slots to be used simultaneously, including a USB-C 3.2 Gen2 port that supports data transfer up to 10 Gbps. Dual memory card slots include a CFexpress Type A/SD UHS-II combination slot and another SD UHS-II slot, perfect for dual recording or for those who need the capacity of multiple memory cards in a single shoot. The high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery has been reused from many of Sony’s other flagship cameras, giving creators who already own one of these cameras compatibility with their current batteries.

Mike Bubolo, Sr. Product Manager for Digital Imaging at Sony joined Seth Miranda on set for a hands-on look at the Alpha a7 V and its advanced autofocus and imaging capabilities.
