Sony’s R-series lineup has always been about outstanding resolution and image quality. The A7R VI delivers the same stunning images we’re used to seeing – now with speed.
A new 66.8MP fully stacked sensor allows for incredible resolution and up to 30 fps burst shooting with pre-capture. A stunning 9.44m-Dot EVF is not only hyper-realistic to look through, but also has a 120 fps refresh rate. 16 Stops of dynamic range is a one-stop improvement from the A7R V, allowing you to reveal details from the shadows or highlights in post processing that you never thought possible. Finally, impressive 8K video capabilities ensure that this is truly a camera for all types of shooters. Whether you work solo or on a large production, the A7R VI delivers speed and resolution to creators of all types.
Sony has opted to update the sensor in its latest R-series camera with a newly developed 66.8MP fully stacked Exmor RS BSI sensor, which was the highest-resolution fully stacked sensor available at the time of its release. This sensor enables faster readout speeds and eliminates distortions from rolling shutter. The new sensor has a 16-stop dynamic range, up from 15 stops in the previous model, and can shoot with a native sensitivity of ISO 100-32000, expandable to 50-102400.

The A7R VI features a BIONZ XR2 processing unit that leverages deep learning to deliver incredibly fast, reliable in-camera features. This results in more accurate color reproduction and auto white balance processing, and extends to the autofocus performance as well.

The updated D-Range Optimizer (DRO) balances bright highlights and dark shadows and offers a wider range of strength settings, up to Lv8. At higher levels, DRO lifts shadow areas in strong backlight, delivering more natural-looking portrait shots.

The Visible Light + IR Sensor works with deep learning-based illumination estimation to achieve stable, accurate auto white balance under any lighting. Together, they enable natural color reproduction in a wide variety of scenes.

In-body image stabilization has been improved to support up to 8.5 stops of camera shake compensation in the center and 7 stops at the periphery. For video, there is also an Active IS mode that uses even more precise stabilization to deliver smoother footage straight out of the camera. When paired with select OSS-enabled lenses, this offers even better stabilization performance.

The A7R VI’s autofocus is powered by a subject-detection system that can identify seven target types. These subjects include things like Human, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car/Train, Airplane, and more. Human pose estimation allows the camera to distinguish multiple subjects and maintain focus on the target, even in busy scenes or when another subject crosses in front. 759 autofocus points cover 94% of the image sensor, and ensure the subject is tack sharp, regardless of position in the frame. Finally, in-camera focus bracketing is possible, allowing up to 299 frames with slightly adjusted focus points for increased depth of field.

The A7R VI has received much-needed updates to the video capabilities, now making the R-series an excellent choice for hybrid shooters. 10-bit 8K/30p footage lets you crop in post-production or future-proof your footage, while 4K/120p via 5K oversampling can produce silky-smooth slow-motion footage. Users can control color in camera with the included S-Cinetone profile, S-Log2/3 gamma curves, ProRes RAW, and custom importable LUTs. Breathing Compensation mode reduces the effects of focus breathing on select lenses, and improved heat dissipation allows for extended recording times.

The most notable upgrade in the A7R VI’s body is a new 9.44m-Dot EVF, offering superbly clear, accurate image viewing. The EVF is 3x brighter than the predecessor and offers 120fps for hyper-realistic playback. A new, improved battery offers better battery life, and two USB-C ports enable creators to charge the battery while transferring data. A 3.2” 2.1m-dot 4-Axis Multi-Angle LCD offers touchscreen design and a DCI-P3 wide gamut for accurate color monitoring.
