I'll start out by saying that I don't like zoom lenses. Typically to get a wide enough aperture in a zoom lens for creative control over depth of field means carrying a lens that is so big and heavy that it stays home instead of on my camera. Bigger lenses in addition to being too heavy to enjoy long walks, also attract too much attention on the street and make a lot of candid opportunities more difficult, if not impossible. I'm also a mostly 50mm photographer. I've been shooting mostly at or near 50mm for decades, first on film and then on digital. I only need a longer lens for a tiny of fraction of what I like to shoot, and while I enjoy going wider, I usually solve that with a small 28mm prime in my pocket while the 50mm is on the camera. This lens is good enough to make me leave my primes at home. I recently downgraded from the Canon R5 and RF lenses to the much smaller and lighter Sony A7Cii, and this is my go-to travel lens. I love that it defaults to the 50mm setting when in its most compact form, and extends when pulling back to 24mm. Most zoom lenses are extended at 50mm and are at their smallest at 24mm, which is completely backwards for my shooting style which defaults to 50mm. This lens is small and light. At 50mm it's about the same size as the old Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and is much smaller and lighter than the current Canon RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM and while about 30% heavier, it remains light and nimble on the A7Cii. Of course, it doesn't have f/1.4 like the Canon primes I used to carry, but those lenses didn't pull back to 24mm. I did also buy a clean used copy of the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 ZA for shallow depth of field or when I want to go even smaller and lighter, but this zoom lens really does cover about 90% of everything I'd ever want to shoot. I also considered the Sony 20-70mm f/4 G for its increased range on both ends and the older Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 ZA which can be had in near-new used condition for less than half the cost of this lens, but f/4 and the fact that both of those lenses are somewhat extended at their 50mm position made them less attractive than this 24-50mm f/2.8. Optical quality is outstanding, not quite up to the level of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM, but far better than the older Canon EF 50mm f/1.4. More importantly, Sony doesn't offer a modern, high-end 28mm prime, and this lens is the smallest and lightest Sony zoom that includes the 28mm focal length at a constant f/2.8 or faster. On Canon my second lens was usually the tiny RF 28mm F/2.8 pancake or the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS or before that the older EF 28mm f/1.8. This zoom lens is smaller, lighter and optically far better than any of those three Canon 28mm lenses cocooned with even the lightest Canon 50mm prime (the plastic 50mm f/1.8 STM in either RF or EF mount). I still love shooting with primes, but when I want to travel light, this lens on an A7C series camera is the smallest and lightest full-frame travel kit with the optically quality and speed that I want. If you shoot with a Sony A7C series camera you really should try this lens.

I hesitated getting this zoom because I like using primes. It is perfect for walk about use in streets and landscape

A perfect little lens. I purchased this to replace an old Tamron 28-75mm as I wanted the extra width for landscape and street photography. It is beautifully balanced on my A7C2. Sharp as I need a lens to be and the focusing is lightning fast on my camera.

Sharp, all the necessary controls, lightweight, small, excellent manual focus (and auto of course). On a7R V I get 24-75 when I include cropping at the long end so why add the extra weight of a 24-70?

As a wedding filmmaker who values a lightweight and portable setup, the Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens has been a game-changer. Its compact design pairs perfectly with my Sony FX3 on a gimbal, making it ideal for a run-and-gun style, especially for long wedding days. The constant f/2.8 aperture excels in low-light settings, capturing beautifully crisp footage during intimate candlelit ceremonies and evening receptions. Its 24-50mm range is versatile enough for venue-wide shots and emotional close-ups, reducing the need to swap lenses mid-shoot. For filmmakers who prefer a smaller, lighter kit without compromising performance, this lens is a must-have.

I bought this to replace a 24-70 lens that I found was unbalanced on my AC7R, this lens is much better balanced. I have also bought a 70-200 lens that I will mainly use on a tripod and only occasionally hand held. I tried to add a photo but there as an error message that the file was too large, very odd when it came from the lens camera combination.

Love this compact lens for street doc work. Has click less iris like the 24-70 GM II. Using with A7sII, Electronic lens breathing compensation works well. 24-50mm works well for me.

The focal range of this compact zoom is the range I normally shoot in, making it perfect for both my Sony A7Cii and my A7IV.
