Sony has bundled all the features a creator might need in this compact telephoto zoom, designed to go anywhere your craft takes you.
Physical Controls
Well-placed controls on the lens make capturing your subject simple and intuitive. Beyond zoom and focus, this lens provides a physical switch for focus range. Whether you are shooting sports through a fence or birds through a mix of foliage, choose 3m-infinity so the lens knows not to grab focus on nearby subjects. Use the AF FULL mode to allow the lens its full range of autofocus. Perhaps your situation calls for manual focus. All of these modes are accessible with a quick slide of a switch.
The Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS also includes a switch for Steady Shot and a focus hold button. The latter can be customized via camera menus. For ease of carry, the lens includes a zoom lock switch as well. This keeps your lens safe by preventing the zoom from sliding while you walk with the camera in hand or over your shoulder.
Take it Anywhere
Weighing in at 654g and with a length of 6.5 in. and diameter of 3.12 in., this is a compact and lightweight telephoto zoom. With sealing at critical joints and seams, creators can be confident that the dust- and moisture-resistant FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS will capture their vision in just about any location. As with all Sony lenses, this design is not guaranteed to be 100% dust- and moisture-proof.
Beautiful Rendering
Featuring 19 elements in 10 groups, including two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations. Add to that two Aspherical lens elements to minimize aberrations, and you have a telephoto zoom capable of capturing richly detailed images. A nine-blade circular aperture renders bokeh that is beautiful without being distracting. Additionally, a lens hood is included to prevent lens flare. The included ALC-SH188 lens hood is purpose-built for this lens to block stray light from outside its angle of view.
Powerful Auto-Focus
The Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is designed to take advantage of Sony's legendary autofocus. In fact, those shooting with the Sony a9 III will enjoy up to 120 fps with Autofocus and Auto Exposure tracking. This is accomplished with 2 Linear motors, which continue to focus even when the lens is zooming.
Optical Image Stabilization
When working with telephoto zooms, stabilization is not just nice; it is essential. The Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS features optical stabilization that works seamlessly with Sony's IBIS.
The lens also supports compatible cameras' breathing compensation function, correcting for shifts in angle of view caused by focus changes during movie recording, so your framing stays consistent as focus pulls between subjects.
Close up or Far Away
While a telephoto zoom is designed to bring things closer, this lens also allows creators to get closer. With a minimum focusing distance of 3.7 ft at the wide end and 2.8 ft at the telephoto end, the Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS offers 0.41x maximum magnification.
Teleconverters
Fully compatible with the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters: SEL14TC and SEL20TC. This makes an already powerful zoom reach into the super zoom territory, stretching your 400mm reach to 560mm or even 800mm (1200mm in APS-C format).
