Excellent sound. Easy to setup. But after Cable remote turns everything off (and it does turn off) receiver turns itself back on and must be turned off a second time. Why? Who knows. From comments I have read online, I am not the only one. So I must have receiver remote (or a finger) available to turn off receiver independently of tv/cable box. Inconvenient but the excellent sound makes up for it. Even my wife agrees the sound is great, which is amazing. System: new Samsung 65" series 7100 tv; Comcast cable box (Sci Atl 8300HD); 7 speakers (2 front, 1 center, 4 ceiling); and, computer hooked to receiver DVD input.

This 7.2 4k A/V Receiver really surpassed my expectations. I hooked up an old 5.1 Infinity speaker system instead of 7.2 and that was all I needed to do. The receiver detected what the speaker system was and adjusted itself accordingly. The I hooked up a new Samsung 40" smart tv and voilà, everything was set. I thought I would have had to set the remote to turn on the TV when it was needed but when I pressed TV, the tv came on and the receiver was set to 5.1 surround automatically. The sound is amazing. FM Stereo works just as well. I am impressed.

This receiver is very good, works very well. Although I do have some reservation. Every time I want to watch T.V. Or anything else, I still have to go through the set-up process to tell the receiver what I want to watch, which I find to be very annoying. Other than that this is a great receiver.

I first bought this receiver in the fall, before recently stepping up to the 840. This is a very good basic A/V receiver esp if you don't need any built in Wifi or things like AirPlay for you iOS devices. The only thing that set this back was the failure to have any component inputs or any video upscaling from the composite input leading to more than just a single hdmi cord to my tv.

While I know this receiver is not the top off the line, It is excellent for the price. Loaded with what you need to calibrate without having to purchase additional equipment. The sound is great paired with your speakers and subwoofer. Theater quality in your home.

I replaced a 12 year old receiver that I paid twice as much for with this Sony. I needed to upgrade to a receiver with Hdmi inputs and outputs. This Sony preforms great and has more punch than my HK and does it with just as a clean sound using the same speakers.Very pleased with my purchase.

I was considering this unit or the STR-DN840 and I am happy that we went with the more basic model. My Panasonic TV is wi-fi enabled so didn't need that on my receiver. The usb connection for iphone/ipod works well, The on-screen graphics look to be circa 1986 but it all the ipod functions work just fine using the OSD controls. Loving the selection of sound fields and the ability to easily switch them around when listening to music vs.watching a movie. 3D passthrough is slick and the auto calibration routine worked like a charm. Only had to change my surround speakers to "small"... Front height mode is very cool - definitely adds to movie watching experience.

Just what I needed, no more no less. I don't need airplay or any other internet stuff. Just some HDMI connections and good codecs and pass-thru. Works great with my panasonic TV and PS3. I can control all of them using my TV remote thanks to viera link!

Great receiver !!! You would be hard pressed to find a similar receiver with this much power and features for the price. I love the fact that it is NOT internet ready. I have enough internet in my home including a 3D BD/DVD player that is wifi ready. I have this unit connected to my Sony KDL-70R550A 3D TV. I use high speed HDMI cables designated for 3D. My TV is hung on the wall so this receiver lets me have only 2 wires/cables hanging from the back of the TV. The TV's power cord and one HDMI. I have 4 HDMI components hooked up to back of the receiver. I love the HDMI 3D Standby Pass Through feature which allows me to watch an input without leaving the receiver on. On the other hand this is also the only feature I don't like. When I push the input button on the remote to change inputs it also turns on the receiver. I then have to turn the receiver off which still allows the signal to pass through if I want to watch something on the TV without leaving the receiver on. This is an extra step I was not counting on but it works. I am guessing that the receiver has to turn on in order to switch the inputs. I have an Infinity 7.1 speaker system with a 12 in. subwoofer, which sounds awesome with this receiver. Remember in order to enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI. If you use the Optical / Tos-Link connection you will only get Dolby Digital and DTS. The only other thing I don't like is the speaker thumb screws could be a little larger and spaced a little further apart. Next time I will use banana plugs

Love it. Only complaint is that when I hooked it up the way it should be (all HDMI cords into receiver, then one HDMI cord from receiver to t.v.), the pass-through feature didn't work the way I thought it would. I don't always listen to the t.v. through the receiver, so to watch t.v. via the cable box, you have to turn on the receiver and hit the catv button (if it was on Tuner or something else prior) in order for the cable signal to get to the t.v. You can then turn the receiver off. I ended up wiring the old way to my non-Sony t.v......HDMI cables from cable box and blu-ray directly to t.v., as well as the HDMI cable from the receiver. I have an optical cord from the t.v. to the receiver for all the sound, and it works fine. I read that HDMI cables reproduce a better signal than optical, but I can't tell the difference. Other than that, this low price receiver works fantastic!

I chose the Sony STR-DH740 7.2 AV Receiver to power my Energy Take Classic 5.1 surround system mainly for the following reasons: * I did not want an av receiver with the extra "Smart" features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Airplay for Apple products, or other built-in apps. I already have a Samsung Smart TV, so it ended up saving me $150-250 just for not wanting the extra features on my av receiver. * I wanted an av receiver that offered all banana plug inputs, which turned out to be a limited amount of choices in the entry-midrange av receiver market. * Sony's website ended up having the best deal on the Sony STR-DH740 for a limited time. The DH740's MSRP is $299.99. Sony had a $50 off sale and then signing up for Sony's Education Store brought the price down to $226 with free 2 day express shipping. Here's what I used to complete my setup: *Energy Speaker sTake Classic 5.1 Surround System * Various lengths of the AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable #3 Feet/0.9 Meter# - Supports Ethernet, 3D, and Audio Return [Newest Standard]. * Sewell Development Corp SW-29223 Pro Maestro Banana Plugs with Gold Connectors. * C&E 100 Feet 14AWG Enhanced Loud Oxygen-Free Copper Speaker Wire Cable. * Mediabridge Ultra Series Subwoofer Cable - #15 Feet, White# - Dual Shielded with RCA to RCA Gold Plated Pro Grade Connectors. Having read the entire Sony manual beforehand, the initial av receiver setup was straightforward with no surprises. I like that my HDMI devices are routed to the av receiver and only one HDMI cable coming from the "HDMI OUT" slot goes to my TV. My Samsung UN60F6300 60-inch LED HDTV instantly recognized the av receiver input and configured itself appropriately. My surround sound system is the Energy Speakers Take Classic 5.1 system. I first performed the Sony Auto Calibration with the supplied Sony microphone placed it in my head level seating position. The Auto Calibration measured all my speaker distances nearly dead on! As per Energy Speakers recommendations, I then adjusted the 5 speakers to "small" setting, set the frequency response of the satellite/center speakers to 100Hz, and set the subwoofer frequency response to about 95 Hz and the sub's volume knob to a little over halfway. Overall, I'm very impressed with Sony's STR-DH740 av receiver working with my surround sound system! It offers all the options that I wanted in my search for my first av receiver. Both DVR'ed movies and tv shows sound amazing through the surround sound system powered by the STR-DH740 with so much well balanced bass, clarity, and detail! I'm looking to get a Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal on a Playstation 3 console to play both new PS3 games and my collection of PS1 games, act as my Blu-ray/DVD player, and to play music from CD's/digital music on usb flash drives. Even though Sony states that the front mounted usb port on the STR-DH740 will only recognize Apple or Sony media devices to stream music, I'm able to use the usb port to recharge my Logitech Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800 that's positioned on my coffee table via the supplied long Logitech usb cord.

Easy to set up and use. I connected my TV, Blu-ray and Cable TV to this unit via HDMI. I access wi-fi through the blu-ray. This 7.2 channel receiver is very powerful and versatile. I can listen to commercial radio or simply connect my iPod and listen to my iHeart, Pandora or iTunes music. Add some nice Sony speakers, sit back and enjoy.

Everything comes together with Sony STR-DH740 7.2 Channel 4K A/V Receiver. With four convenient HDMI inputs and 4K resolution pass through, you'll have plenty of ports to plug in compatible components. It brings a theater-like experience to everything you watch with HD Digital Cinema Sound.
