this had no wi-fi or network ability from the factory. I only found this out years after the warranty expired. Unable to update firmware or stream over a network. Sony uninterested.

Could not get AirPlay to work even after software update. When eventually I got AirPlay working it only works on iTunes. It won't play music videos without constantly buffering and takes about 5-10 minutes to load at start. Forget about a film or TV program they are unwatchable. Save your money buy a cheaper version and apple TV.

Greta product and plenty of punch for price. Unit is used as part of home cinema and provides quick and easy set-up, along with the depth of features you'd hope for. A worthy investment.

Great looking Amp, Excellent connectivity, Tricky to make use of all features unless you print the on-line manual. Sound is brilliant, clear and well-placed through my 5.1 Wharfdales. Matches in nicely with my Sony TV and Blu-Ray player, and all can by operated by the Amp remote control. Easy to connect to a home wi-fi network, and overall I am very happy with this device.

Had my refurbished STR-DN1040 for about a month now and have had no problems at all. Easy to setup straight out the box and looks the part too. Sounds great with my 7.1 setup and the 4k upscale looks impressive on my BRAVIA 55X8505B. I recommend this AV for both newbies and pros

Had to reset the amp to start the set up, the navigation seems dated and no video streaming but totally delivers on connections and sound quality.

Although this is now last years unit there is nothing outdated on it what so ever. Sound quality is fantastic and livened up an old very poor quality set of very old speakers initially whilst waiting for my new speaker package to arrive. The receiver allows you to plug all your other equipment in via HDMI’s and you can output to two TV’s, one in your main room and another in a close room for duplicating the output. This goes for the audio too, you have the ability to output in 7.2 which you can have various speaker setups or send your additional speakers to another room or if you want to get fancy bi-wire your expensive speakers to allow double the amplification to the fronts for instance. With Wi-Fi built in you can save yourself the using the LAN cable (this option is still there if you have poor signal though). With this I can play my DLNA media off my NAS drive with ease. Being an Apple fan I can take advantage of the AirPlay features too, makes life pretty easy for any Apple devices to connect to and far easier than the Apple TV. Not sure if the Bluetooth features don’t work on iPhones but I understand the unit to have bluetooth however I haven’t tried / found this yet. Volume turned up to a similar lever you’d experience at the cinema there’s no distortion. I can agree with what I read in What Hi-FI Magazine, the more you turn it up the more the sounds open up and develop, it’s like a good bootle of wine. I’m no audiophile but I can tell good quality when I hear / see it. Sound modes such as Berlin, Stadium and so on I usually find to be complete gimmicks, watching a concert I set the sound to Stadium and I was transported out of the room and felt like I was actually at the venue, it was not gimmicky at all. The sound processing of these modes has been very cleverly designed. AM/FM reception, the included AM and FM antennas aren’t worth bundling in, I cut my aerial cable and attached connectors to allow it to feed into the receiver on it’s way to the TV for FreeView, after doing this I found radio stations I didn’t know existed! However programming the RDS names could be easier, I found that once the station had a strong signal and it found the RDS name I had to go to the save option twice to store the RDS name without typing it myself, a little bit of a chore but you’d expect better with a receiver of the quality. As per most Sony remote controls… Button overkill! You’d think you could operate your toaster with it due to the sheer amount of buttons. I’m a big techie but it gets to the point where there are buttons you won’t really use on this piece of kit but would work your Sony TV or Blu-Ray player, this annoys me as I bought the receiver not the other bits and therefore only want the buttons I need - should I want a one remote does all I’ll buy one! The central directional buttons are a little annoying as they seem to stick momentarily, these are the rubber keys which you can feel which is which easily without looking but the sticking is a little tedious. It’s worth noting that any modern TV with ARC (Audio Return Channel) will allow you to use the TV remote to control volume on the receiver and turning either the TV or receiver to standby will do that same to the other unit at the same time, long gone are the days of pressing varying amounts of buttons to get the sound to go with the TV image - that used to be a nightmare when the parents came over and were asking what do I press… Setup is a breeze and a real nice experience as you plug in the provided microphone, place it where you want the centre stage of the surround to be (ideally where you’ll sit) and let it do its thing for 30 seconds. You can adjust things manually but there’s really no need to as I found the automatic settings perfect on both speaker setups. The unit looks sleek and actually has some nice flush mounted buttons on the front panel which keeps it aesthetically pleasing, the downside here is the two dials, they feel solid and have some resistance when turning them but they are only made of soft plastic with a sprayed coating. Within the first few minutes of getting out of the box I managed to scratch the bigger dial by placing it near the all to connect all the cables, the softest touch to a indoor painted lounge wall scratched the surface which I found quite annoying. Some other reviews I’ve seen stated the receiver could get very warm, I have not experienced this as yet ( a few weeks in) and would assume it was a faulty model. As far as I can tell thus far the unit runs pretty cool as it has plenty of ventilation and is also silent, no humming or vibrations. Overall an amazing piece of equipment if you can grab for half the price of the 1050 your laughing! Highly recommend and I can see why it won awards. For an example comparing this to a Sony DVD cinema 5.1 system, you’d hear somethings towards the rear channel but not be able to tell 100% what it was, this receiver on the other hand even with the same speakers gave definitive clear audio that you could tell instantly what was happening. Playing video games and rotating a character around 360 degrees you’ll get the speech clearly moving around your room, the comparison of the two setups is chalk and cheese.

All I can say is this is the best sounding amp that I have owned three other amps (which i have to refrain from mentioning as rules state) i thought they were good but this blows them away.a clue to other make was that the hdmi boards keep blowing up on these models.after one week as well!.so i decided to go with the Sony.

i bought this av tuner/amp in May 2014 and although it took a bit of navigating and looking at the PDF manual that i downloaded,in the end i got the hang of most of the features on it and was well worth the investment,it does work a lot differently to my old non HDMI amp as this is what i would regard as hi-tech compared to my old amp!!

I'm an absolute beginner in the home cinema domain. As a beginner, I checked out websites to find the best AV receiver in terms of price for value, which pointed me towards this product. FYI: I use it with Dali zensor 5.1 speakers. My grades for this Sony AV Receiver: - Design 3/5: well, I don't know any good-looking AV receiver. They're all big bulky rectangles. The Sony receiver follows this rule. The only thing that bugged me here is that the wifi antenna goes higher than the upper edge of the receiver. - Ease of use 5/5: plug your speakers and up to 8 HDMI devices in, use the included microphone to calibrate the receiver automatically and off you go! The user interface is really clear and it is easy to access any functionality. - Sound quality 5/5: I don't know how this receiver compares with others as this is my first receiver. But I love the sound that comes out of it. The quality is really good, whether I watch TV, play a Blu-Ray or use my PS3. - Features 4/5: this receiver is fairly simple. You select your input and that's it. There are a few welcome sound effects but I don't use them to be honest. I think simple is good so I don't mind having a few features only. Adding Airplay to this receiver is a really good idea (Apple products only). Bluetooth is missing though. It would have been good for anti-Apple people. - Build quality 4/5: the receiver looks solid. There are air holes on top of the device. I understand AV receivers produce a lot of heat. I just hope the dust coming in will not be an issue. - Value 5/5: well, if this product does not break down, I will probably keep it for a long time. It's worth adding a note about the apps that come with the receiver: - There is a TV guide app, from which you can access a remote control for the receiver. I'm not sure having a TV guide here is the brightest idea, since I can't change the channel from the same app (it is maybe possible for those who own a Sony TV though). I don't use this app much, except when I'm too lazy to get the real remote control. - There is another app which I have never used

I got the STR DN1040 to replace my all in one set up and i am so happy i did, the sound quality is fantastic, sounds just like you are in cinema (You do need to buy a good set of speakers i am using Q7000), This was my 1st AV Amp but i am very happy with it, was very easy to set thanks to its new menus, has lots of HDMI inputs which is what i needed. Have had no problems with this and have had it almost a year.

I read some very positive reviews about this receiver and so I took the plunge and have to say that it is every bit as good as I hoped. it was very easy to set up. I was pleasantly surprised at the sonic quality with cds, though I have a very good player, and its not too bad with mp3 either and you can connect with usb in the front. I use a compatible sony smart tv with 5:1 speaker set up and think that where this receiver excels is with HD TV programs and dvd/ blue ray films. I am really pleased with this first upgrade receiver

I bought this AV unit along with a separate set of decent quality speakers to replace an all in one Sony Home theatre system which had become obsolete with the lack of HDMI / USB connectivity. I was sold on the 1040 model as it had won What Hi-Fi product of the year award and received a 5 star rating, I decided to see for myself and requested a demo at my local tech store. Setup was extremely easy with Sony's characteristic step by step instruction, once setup was complete the experience could begin and I was not disappointed. The sound range when playing Dolby digital movies / program's was incredible, also the improved picture clarity with HDMI attenuation was highly evident to me coming from a much less sophisticated system. The abundance of connectivity was also very impressive and allowed me to make the most of the incredible audio and visual improvements whilst watching Sat TV, DVD (up scaling), Blu-Ray, gaming etc. Overall outstanding system and fantastic value for money.

I purchased the STR-DN1040 in April this year after carefully reviewing other contenders in the Home Theatre Products available from other manufacturers. This receiver was awarded 'Product of the Year Awards 2013' by the respected 'What Hi-Fi Magazine' and it was this and other articles that I read elsewhere on-line which helped make my decision. When it comes to making purchases of Hi-Fi equipment it's always advisable to do your research first as not all Home Cinema equipment can be regarded as equal. Making a wrong decision to begin with can be very hard to live with and costly mistake. Thankfully the great reviews this product has already received made buying this item a painless task and after auditioning the product at my local retailers demo room here in Milton Keynes I was not disappointed. Sony have excelled in giving the user ample connectivity with 7 HDMI Inputs & 2 Outputs. I paid a little more and opted for this model over it's predecessor as it also boasted an on-screen user interface to allow access to the various settings and audio features. Set-up was a breeze thanks to this on-screen interface and I found using it very intuitive and easy to understand. Sadly as with many equipment manufacturers these days Sony do not provide a user manual in the box but instead have a digital download version on their website. I have marked Sony down a star in my review as a manual is an absolute must for something this advanced. The on-line manual is 128 pages long so it gives you an idea of how much reading there is to do. Having to view the manual on a computer screen is frustrating if your PC is not in the same room as your TV and printing one off is not always practical. Sony seem to have overlooked those customers that do not have access to a PC or printer. Another reason for marking Sony down a star is the build quality, although quite acceptable it does feel a little cheaper than my 20 year old AV\Receiver and the volume knob is very light weight and flimsy to the touch. That said, thanks to the supplied remote I rarely have to manually adjust the volume and so this is no major issue. Sound quality is exceptional with ample DSP sound settings to satisfy most users. Sony have also introduced 2 x Front Height Channels to the mix and 2 x Sub Outputs which adds additional depth when viewing movies. The supplied microphone for speaker set-up is also a very welcome feature and the accuracy of measurement is outstanding. I found the sound output to be balanced and very pleasing to listen too. On the whole this receiver performs admirably and I am very happy to give my review here. Hopefully Sony will consider the minor negative points I raised and take these into consideration for the future.

I bought this unit 4 weeks ago to replace a Yamaha model that I had only owned for 1 year, and only used a handful of times. I needed more features and the Sony, fit the bill. I can now watch a DVD without having to switch on the unit thanks to the pass thru facility in stanby mode. The sound from this unit is fantastic, even the internet radio sounds clear ( even with a wireless connection). A nice expansive effortless sound.

I bought this a few months ago and I am very impressed with the sound quality, great with movies and also music. Few things were not happy with is the front display on receiver is plastic and is a scratch magnet, after just wiping the dust off with a non abrasive cloth, there is scratches highly visible, would of been better if display was made from glass or some other scratch free material. The knobs are cheapy plastic too. Apart from that it is a great receiver

Unbelievable quality and sound from an amp at this price . From reviews I was expecting a good amp but this is a great amp . I have had high end amps in the past and this matches them but at a bargain price . The bonus is music sounds good on it too which a/v receivers are not always good with . Enjoyed it from day one .

This unit replaced a Sony STR DA5400ES which gave me excellent service for 4-5 years. The 1040 is a logical replacement with updated facilities and amazing functionality. Connectivity is brilliant and sound quality and sound field options excellent.

I have had this receiver for 6 months and it is a step change from the Onkyo it replaced. It is used bi-wired with Mordaunt Short Mezzo 8's a subwoofer and centre speaker which is great for films. I can pick out imperfections in mp3 recordings if the volume is turned up. For CD/FLACs this is a superb set up with excellent sound throughout the range. It works superbly with my NAS drive and seamlessly with my W9 TV and PS4. I would have had to spend at least twice the money to get these features elsewhere and doubt I would have got better sound.

I've owned and listened to many home cinema receivers over the years , but never taken much notice of Sony as a serious contender in this market . How wrong I've been ! This receiver is exceptional , handling every sound track I've thrown at it with a clear and rich sound field , even at low volume the sound is detailed and engaging .
