While it comes as advertised, and was likely great bang for your buck a couple of years ago, Somy us decided to exclude this unit from their SongPal app. This makes its wireless control impossible. How a unit can cycle so quickly through app support is surprising and disappointing.

Great performer, the reviews are right. Functionally rich and most importantly sounds fantastic with all sources. I think the UI is a little dated, especially with streaming music and the sudden removal of Songpal integration is disappointing for not an old product.

Recently got it. No remote. Having hard time setting it up. Iphone, Android remotes suck... Excellent Sound tho...

Only 3 years old and app support is pulled. It's not reasonable to purchase a new receiver every 3 years. Last time I purchased anything Sony.

Excellent sound quality, but the controls could not be more poorly designed. You need a TV monitor to make most adjustments--very little can be done directly through the unit. Even with the monitor, the adjustments are non-intuitive. The sales reps where I bought it didn't fully understand the controls and misrepresented some of them. Sony: please keep the sound but redesign the controls with users rather than engineers in mind.

Loved the sound quality and the functionality found in the app to run the 1050 receiver until Sony discontinued support of the app in August 2017. DO NOT BUY THIS RECEIVER without understanding the impact of this change. You'll have to use the receiver or remote to control many features from the menu which must have a TV screen to view. I believe there is some functionality that is completely gone too since it could only be run from the app and Sony has not followed up with an updated instruction manual on how to use it without the app.

Bought this receiver about two years ago. Sony rwmoved this receiver from their Music Center app. That's right, they just let down thousands of Sony users. Check for yourself in App stores.

The replacement for my STR-DN1040 (the one where Sony messed up the streaming service, so I had to upgrade, at further cost) I have been enjoying my 1050, and in spite of the slowness of the supporting app - Sony Music Center, on my tablet had been enjoying it. However Sony has recently decided to dump app support for the excellent 1050. In practical terms this means if the app on my tablet gets updated inadvertently, I will lose many aspects of settings management. As none of that is accessible via the front panel of the 1050, I'm puzzled as to what Sony expect owners to do. Sony pushed out this design, with the supporting app pretty much being touted as a feature, and now they are taking it away. I have tried to raise a ticket with Customer Service and not even had an acknowledgement. I am persevering via social media, but I honestly do not believe the people I am in discussion with have a clue about the receiver's dependency on the app. Without resolution in this matter, I've probably bought my last Sony product.

Good device, good sound. But Sony recently (July 2017) announced that the control app will not be supported in future. I.e. controlling the device by smartphone/tablet will not be possible any more. See discussion in the Sony Community: http://community.sony.com/t5/Home-Theater-Products/STR-DN1050-and-Music-Center/m-p/637625#M16279 I bought the device in June 2017. No acceptable costumer service.

I've had this receiver for about 2 years. The on screen interface lacks some compared to other comparably priced receivers, but the sound quality is excellent. There were initially some limitations and issues with the SongPal (now updated to Music Center App), but most of those have been fixed in the last couple versions. However, today 7/6/2017 I was made aware that the Music Center App will no longer support the DN1050 model. This is extremely disappointing for a receiver in this price range that I've had for less than 2 years. I expect to receive better support. I use the app as much as I use the receiver.

The installation was easy, everything was labeled really well. Also, the setup feature that automatically comes up walks you all the way through the process and was so user friendly, that I was even able to swap the wires for two of the speaker that I had wrong, and it brought up the setup again, and it is flawless now!

Bought 3 weeks ago, can't really say I am happy with it, in fact I am thinking of returning it. Problem I have experienced is the the pass through only work with Blu Ray player and Satellite. It doesn't work when i switch on my android box, unless i connect it to the satellite HDMI. I have to have the AV switched on to watch the android box. The main problem is that I loose picture and audio, randomly, doesn't matter, what is connected to the AV.

When I saw this AVR on sale in my usual retailer's store, I just had to take a closer inspection, and I'm so glad I did! I suppose I would quite rightly describe this unit as "upper mid range", although the huge amount of features available are often only found on "high end" products; i.e: SIX HDMI Inputs + THREE Outputs,an Optical Digital Input,USB Connection,FM radio Tuner,Internet Radio... (Oh, and 4K Upscaling!) The remote control is cleanly and simply designed and the On Screen menus are clear and easy to follow. Pair these features with brilliant sound and picture quality, and superb positioning of everything in the audio soundstage, and you've got yourself a little beauty of a Home Cinema AVR! Also, you have a more-than-generous 165W per channel power output. As for initial setup... well,it's a doddle! My only disappointment is that I have this unit connected to a 50" Panasonic Smart 3D TV, and for some reason, the "ARC" (Audio Return channel), when connected via HDMI, causes VERY NOTICEABLE lip sync. issues, which I was totally unable to overcome in this mode, and I had to resort to an Optical Digital connection for the sound! I don't know which of the units causes this discrepancy. This unit is great for watching Netflix, etc, and fully decodes the Dolby 5.1 signal. Overall, then,a fabulous unit and well worth consideration, especially if looking to upgrade from an older/cheaper "budget" AVR! This unit may not be classified as "Top End", but it definitely PERFORMS like one!

Value for money 10 out of 10, product 10 out of 10. What can you say this product goes so well with my Sony 55" 3D TV,it makes movies come to life I can't turn the volume above 28, the tone is fantastic if your eardrums can stand it and you turn the volume up it stays so clear.

The STR-DN 1050 has moved me into modern times with AV amps replacing may ageing Marantz SR-5300. The ability to Bi-Amp the front speakers using the 6th and 7th channels is a great bonusand really adds to the clarity and seperation of the sounds. The bass placement and weight is more precise and accurate and the DTS-HD tracks really are great. A couple more ease of use features would be really useful, like the ability to be even more flexible with the HDMI and optical inputs for the Sky box and TV inputs, but overall it's workable. A little picture of the speaker set up being used would be handy too, but overall I'm extremely happy with the receiver.

Prior to this I bought the Denon AVRX1100W which was very nice looking and had a nice sound but the display stopped working. I replaced it with the Sony str-dn1050 which has probably got a better sound and a much better interface.

Okay, I love this product. Great smart receiver, and great sound. I don't use the AM and FM antennas it comes with, but with one of the top-of-the-line outdoor AM/FM HD antennas on the market. My antenna can receive very distant AM and FM stations, but it requires a good tuner to play it on. Now I know that it's not the fault of the antenna for not getting the distant AM channels (and about 95%, not 100% of FM), for I did extensive research. I also know from what I read that AM is not really a priority for pretty much all companies who make A/V receivers. FM is great, but not perfect. I guess the excuse is that the reason AM is often overlooked is because not too many listen to AM in their homes, but that doesn't help people like me who spent a lot of money on both this and an expensive outdoor AM/FM HD antenna and are enthusiasts. To me not spending enough time on any feature isn't an excuse. I still have plenty of other options, like the Pandora and TuneIn smart features and the SiriusXM radio I have hooked up to it, but I request that all future A/V receivers by Sony have the best AM and FM while still being smart with features like Pandora and TuneIn. They future models should remain 4K and 3D compatible too. Adding SiriusXM Internet Radio and iHeart Radio as part of the smart features would be nice too.

This receiver is like a world champion athlete without legs. A very good hardware with no or limited connectivity is useless. It has a USB inlet but you cannot connect it to a PC. Wireless card is 2.4 MHz and so slow that you cannot transmit high quality signal through it. The wired network card is not even at 10 Mbps, so is even slower than wireless. Hey guys, you shall put some connectivity to a device if you want to give the possibility to be used. You know? The World does not gravitates only around HDMI and BRAVIA, there are other things out there, go out and see.

Plus points: is a good central piece of kit in a multi-input, multi-speaker home audio-visual system. Minus point: the instructions for use are inadequate. Sony's tech dept have been responsive - good service - and there is obviously a good deal more info available somewhere deeply buried inside Sony. It needs to be made more readily accessible, online, to generally technically competent but not AV kit experts buyers. I am pretty IT literate but still haven't been able to fathom out how to hack into the Sony online tech instructions database other than via specific links emailed to me by tech dept!

My Receiver developed a fault within 4 months, which has still not been rectified. I am not commenting on the service, just the fact that it seems that this is not the bullet-proof product I was expecting. Perhaps I got a bad one?

I was impressed with the overall sound quality of this product and the fact that it ha replaced a 13 year old Yamaha amplifier has showed me how far behind I was with sound technology. My only gripe was after a couple of days of use I tried to watch a music Blu ray disc through this receiver using headphones. the volume was limited for reasons that I still cannot understand. I am away from home so must wait until I am home , and have a helpline number in the US that I must call when I am with the receiver and try to resolve this problem. E mails to the retailer and Sony Europe could not explain this problem , but the fact that the LED shows the words "maximum limited sound" (or words to this effect) means that there is something within the system that is managing this. It is disconcerting that the huge online users manual does not shed any light on this problem , and the retailer have told me that their show model does not have this issue. It may be unfair but I can only make this review based upon my experiences with this receiver now. I may have a more positive view when and if I can remedy the volume limiter.

The audio is top notch, exceeding the price range. Many of the features are very useful. I use it with my computer which is my main entertainment hub. I see more and more people using Receivers for this purpose as they usually far exceed the quality of computer speakers. It would be great if Sony could look into how people like me use this kind of hardware. I imagine it is perfectly set up for lounge TV use, but it is a little more complicated when using it with a computer. For instance If I plug my graphics card's HDMI into the receiver for best general audio output (Optical can't stream DTS-HD-Master) and then another HDMI from the HDMI out to my monitor, it only allows me to set the resolution at 1920x1080. My monitor is an Ultrawide that runs natively at 2560x1080 so although I get sound, I lose a lot of the picture. I currently have to have a displayport to my monitor and HDMI to the receiver, both from the graphics card. Unfortunately this means I can't access the on screen menu. If I plug a monitor in just for the menu, because of the way HDMI is designed, I no longer get any sound. I love the fact you can stream high quality audio tracks to the player over the network with DLNA, this allows the Receiver itself to decode the audio file which gives a more refined listening experience with a better soundstage than if you played it through windows audio. The built in DLNA player is a bit cumbersome when selecting between tracks, especially if you have a huge library so I recommend using a media player like JRiver that can queue songs up for you and communicate with the receiver directly over the network. One feature I would like to see is the ability to be able to have the calibration data stored in the custom presets so I could switch between them easily as I change positions in the room I use it in. Sometimes I'm right near the front of the room, sometimes in the middle, and sometimes at the back, depending on whether I'm watching movies, listening to music or playing games. It is quite cumbersome having to recalibrate, and then having to re-set the crossover frequencies to 80Hz every time I change position several times a day. (maybe this could be addressed in a software update?) Overall these are minor niggles compared to the sonic excellence produced when it is set up properly. The remote is well designed with the most useful features easily at hand (although I would be lost without it, no way to navigate the menu from the receiver itself) Bluetooth with Aptx is a great addition, I don't have an Aptx capable player or phone yet but when I do I imagine the quality would be the same as when using DLNA because it sends the actual file over for the Receiver to decode and play itself without further compressing it like older bluetooth standards. I'm hoping that the ability to have height speakers is hinting at Dolby Atmos compatibility in the near future, otherwise I fail to see the point. Overall This is an excellent product. The features are well chosen and implemented, the quality of the components and thoughtfulness of the design mean that listening to this is a pleasure I look forward to every day.

I purchased this receiver about 3 weeks ago to replace a Pioneer VSX-323K which I'd had for almost a year as an entry system. The Sony amp takes things to a whole new level, the sound is much richer and rounded, the surround definitions are much more pronounced and connected to my Tannoy 5.1's the sound experience makes both TV and film viewing such a different experience. I network connectivity is great however, the Deezer and Tunein 'apps' are poor, both in terms of physicla presentation and functionality, they are nowhere near the experience you would expect nor that I have seen on smart TV's, (Panasonic's TV Deezer app knocks spots off this), the knock on effect of this is I resort to the SongPal mobile app (which is great) and stream Deezer from there. The downside of this is a slight loss of sound quality but the huge gain in functionality reduces frustration. All in all a great system, I'm still playing with various settings but it's definitely a huge improvement for myself and one I'm sure many would thoroughly enjoy.

I did not need a new receiver but my current one was about ten years old. I cannot say enough about the sound scape that this unit builds around you. It literally surrounds you with sound like you have never heard. The stereo tracks are split into 7 channels. Sony's engineers have nailed it with this one. Wow! I have started listening to my entire collection all over again.

I bought this as a replacing to my very dated AV amp. The difference is astonishing, there is so much more detail in the sound that is produced. The set up was easy, although there is only an online guide, as with most things these days it didn't take long at all and it was very easy to use. The blue tooth feature is great, it allows my wife to play music from her phone while she is in the kitchen, so great range for a Bluetooth device. I'm still getting to grips with some of it's features but so far so good. Well worth it.

Great Simplicity and Performance
By AV R.
I did a fair bit of research before buying this particular AV Receiver, and to be perfectly honest it was not the product that I originally intended to buy. However the receivers specs and simplicity & expertly reviewed performance by some trusted Websites meant it offered a great value for money compared to other much more expensive ones. I did demo this unit in a shop before buying as well. Six HDMI inputs at the rear +1 at the front were enough for my needs,.. but I would not like to see l...
