Junk

A few weeks after the warranty expired, this receiver quit working on all hdmi outputs. Sony rep tells me to reset it and says if that does not work, I can send it in for repair. What a pitiful piece of equipment. My prior AV receiver lasted well over 10 years. Sony does not make quality equipment any longer. Look elsewhere for a real warranty.

Great onboard DSD conversion.

I’ve had this receiver for a couple of years and I’m very satisfied with the sound quality. I use it primarily for listening to SA-CDs and streaming DSD from my server. For the price it is a solid performer.

Support is lacking

The product is probably okay, but the Iphone app to control it is very poor, crashes all of the time, and lacks in features. For a long time I was unable to change the volume due to the app crashing. Also, controlling it with the remote and front buttons is very unintuitive. I've spent hours trying to figure out why there is no music coming, or why I can't adjust the volume.

Can't return to ENGLISH MENU

Experienced a recent power outage in the neighborhood. Upon power return, TV showed "No Input- check connections." After checking and replacing all HDMI's - same display. Performed a factory reset; now ALL menus appear in Japanese and there is no way to revert all back to English. Experimented with submenus, selected each one; some items reverted back to English, but most others and subtitles are still in Japanese. Cannot make any adjustments with a menu I can't understand. Grrrrr!!!!

6 HDMI outs stopped working.

I bought this from Best buy and bought a warranty but the HDMIs failed first the Blu-ray and game and them a month or two later the other 4 stopped working as well. I tried returning it and the warranty was pasted its date. The receiver display is confusing and the music app for zone 2 is really bad. I bought this to be the "hub electronic" of my of my house. I used it with my Sony projector in the home theater with a PS4 to play games, movies and direct tv. I also used it for my outside patio music even though the app is really bad. The sound and video worked great until it stopped. I feel like a product that cost over 4 hundred dollars should last longer than two years. If Sony can't help. I will have to switch to Sonos and Xbox for my home electronics.

Failed after 18 months

This receiver had great sounds and features until it didn't. After less than 18 months it stopped working completely. It no longer turns on. Now I have to deal with the hassle of trying to get it replaced. DO NOT BUY!

HORRIBLE

Bought 2 years ago. Simple connection, nothing complex. Interface requires you to see the T.V. in order to set it up. There is no setup from the recievers read out. So, if the issue is the connection between Receiver and TV, you are out of luck. My HDMI output stopped working today. Just quit. Can't get it to go HDMI 2. Still plays sound from Audio inputs.... HDMI output is done (fried) and HDMI 2 requires the ability to "see" the menu to choose it.

Power unit began failing within 14 months

About 14 months after putting the unit into service, the power unit (blue cylinder on top motherboard inside the box where the power cord enters from the rear) began to fail. The symptom is a hum coming from inside that starts about 30 minutes after the unit is turned on and reaches peak volume (intolerable) within an hour or so. Upon removing the cover, it was determined that the hum was coming from the power unit using standard bench diagnostic techniques. The power unit not only hums, it gets very, very hot to the touch.

Hum, Unclear Programming Directions, Love the DSD

My suggestion is to bypass this model and go to the STR-DN1080. I have both models. The STR-DN1070 has a pronounced hum and I have a Furman power conditioner. By the way, adding the Furman made a big difference in sound and picture quality. Trying to decipher the directions for programming - like presets or what various sound fields actually do - is difficult. Whoever wrote the directions did such a poor job; I do not understand why updated directions have not been written. I use this with a Sony UBP-X800 SACD / Blue-ray player. DSD Native is great sound quality for SACDs. With so many sound functions and very limited directions I suggest staying away from this AV receiver.

Great Sound

Very happy with the receiver. Has all the features I needed for my home entertainment center. Hdmi switching, and two hdmi outs with variable source for zone 2. I knew going into the purchase that it did not support Dolby Atmos, but handles hdmi 2.2 for 4k expansion.

Generally good but wireless stuff needs more work.

I have it 5 months and connected with BD, CD, MC players. Audio is very good with my 7.1 setup (2 floor speakers and 5.1 Boston Acoustics). Video is very good on my Sony 55x8509 4K 2015 tv, connected with 10m HDMI 2.0 (ARC). Bravia sync works fine. Makes TV, YouTube etc 2 ch audio nicely into 8ch surround. Pairing BT devices like Sony HiRes Walkman or iPhone dosn't work very well and takes very long time, like a minute! But when connected, it's fine to use, till next time when you want to go from Walkman to phone again, dosn't pick up automatically - annoying. LDAC works and BT 4.1 range is good. Sony needs to do more work on soft, menu and wireless connectivity issues, thats why 4/5.

4k HDMI

The good DMI on my 4K TV is exceptional. I was shocked at the improvement in the picture. IMO there should be no improvement just going thru receiver but it is so much better than my Roku 4 direct or BR or cable box that I unplugged all the direct TV HDMI cords The bad FM JST-PH 2 pin connector is impossible to get and wire your own FM stuff. I had to go the EB china to get the male connector. It is small and nice design but if I was not tec savy I would never had found a way to use the FM. Parts Sony please provide a complete parts break down and sell every part or at least every cosmetic plastic part. I scratched my frount black top plastic panel and need a new one.

Music Center App Sucks!!!

I love the receiver, sound quality, but the app is absolutely terrible. I bought this particular device for its multi-room and streaming features. Use my phone to control from outside on deck and the App function always jumps back to "main" speakers everytime phone goes to standby. Also, as I walk away from house the music cuts out. Trying to keep multi-room and streaming functioning consistently is near impossible. Sorry I bought this product (because of the app).

Slow and unreliable

- On Screen Interface is slow - Bluetooth connection is unreliable, become invisible over time - Updates over internet (ethernet cable) is not going through - Factory reset is never ending - takes 3 days and still continues

DN1070 receiver

I like some aspects of the receiver, but I bought an expensive 60-ft premium HDMI/ARC cable to connect my new receiver to my HDMI/ARC port on my LG TV, but I can't get audio to work. I have the receiver routed to HDMI/ARC port 1, and the Verizon FIOS box is connected to HDMI port 2. I have to keep the HDMI input on port 2 or else I don't get video, but I don't get any audio. I had to run an analog connection from the TV output on the receiver to the headphone jack of the TV to get my audio.

Great receiver

This is a nice unit with lots of features and great sound. The documentation for use could be a little better. It may be difficult for someone who is new to using this type of equipment to familiarize themselves with the operation of the receiver. Setup was very easy.

Current Day Capabilites!!!

I am impressed with my Sony STR DN1070 A/V Receiver. I am an entry level audiophile enthusiast who previously owned a Nakamichi RE-1, 2 Channel Stereo, and until now I was incapable of experiencing 5.1 or greater Home Theater sound. The Sony STR DN1070 is a well welcomed upgrade. I was worried about it sounding too loud in my limited space apartment but with the auto-calibration mic setup the receiver aptly set reasonable sound levels for all my speakers and my environment. The countless features and settings to choose from I believe it will be another decade of listening and now watching movies and games before I consider the latest and greatest in sound before purchasing what's new on the market.

Better Sound From Flat Screen TV

So far, so good. Need time to adjust the receiver to my likes so I am exploring what it offers. Fairly simple to setup unit with speakers, TV, and DVD player. Getting the best out of it takes time. One dislike is the size of the print on the controls at the front of the unit. You must get out the microscope to read them because of size, light print and location. Be prepared to squat to read.

Easy to install

Just bought it today to replace a 7.1 unit that was 10 years old that died. Figuring out where the wires holked up was a challenge since the new 7.2 unit likes HDMI cables and the old unit used S-Video, component and HDMI cables.

Easy to setup!

I bought this as a replacement to my STR-DE985. Previous unit sounded great and was functioning fine. Just had no HDMI connections. Once I hooked up this receiver I was blown away how much better it sounded. My test DVD was the first Iron Man movie with the bomb explosions in the beginning. It rocked the whole apartment! I am sure the neighbors won't be happy. :)
