Review Summary
2025-04-12T20:00:00
The last update Sony pushed through the phone is causing sim connectivity issues in that it struggles to connect to the network and takes a while to fully connect / connection drops often. I have tried this with both O2 and Vodafone and I also have an iPhone for work on Vodafone which has no issues at all on a concurrent observation in the same situation. I understand that this is a common issue with a lot of frustrated Sony users and unfortunately there is no longer any support or software upgrades to fix this bug for the Xperia 1iii. Sony phones used to last for years but given the ongoing issues, I may finally end my loyalty to Sony Mobile after two decades of being a customer. I am also hesitant to recommend Sony mobile phones to others as a result - how can I - 2 years and the last software update may impair your phone's most basic functions of calling / receiving calls and data??! and I am in London! Simply unreliable.

Nice phone after 3 years of use. Good back camera, great screen, fast response but front camera is bad. Sound is good bot with speaker's or Sony WH-1000-4 or Sony in ear Wf-c700n Will definitely buy Xperia 1vii when it will be released.

Looking at other reviews it seems I am not alone the fingerprint Biometrics keeps disappearing. I can be sat next to my wife on her old Samsung and she has service and I don't have any on the same network, I have contacted Sony a number of times and they don't reply and this is my 7th and last Sony

When I first bought this phone, I loved it. It was great. I purchased this phone in October of 2021. Unfortunately, there were problems from the beginning, I just didn't recognize them. I purchased a new car, and I didn't even realize my car had Android Auto, because whenever I plugged my phone in, it never showed up. About a year and a half ago, I finally figured out if I jiggled my phone cord into the car USB, it would eventually connect to Android Auto. I thought this was due to my new car and maybe the USB port was loose. But I had the jiggle workaround, so I put off going to the dealership. About a year ago, the biometrics stopped working on this phone. I would have to completely delete my fingerprint and re-register a new one, but that would only work for a few days, before it stopped working again. I gave up on it. I did recently contact Sony support, they had me do the same thing, it worked, and then a few days later, it stopped. Like always. Support also had me try to connect my phone to my laptop for diagnosis. It would never connect. I recently took my car into the dealership. Everyone there was able to connect their phones to my car, and Android Auto would startup right away. The phone was the problem. It was always the problem. Things have very quickly gotten worse. And I didn't realize it was the phone. I have a couch with USB port on the side. I would connect my phone to charge through it. One time, I smelled burning, the charging cable (that was only connected to my couch at the time, and not currently charging anything) was burning a hole into my couch. So upset. I wasn't sure if it was the couch or the cord, but I threw the cord away and stopped using the ports entirely. I now believe it was the phone that damaged the cord and caused this. Over the past 2 weeks, I've made more excuses for this phone. It stopped charging through some of my regular (and relatively new) chargers. It completely stopped connecting to my car. This morning was my last straw. The last charger it was ok with, I plugged it into this morning. Over the past few days, it has taken me plugging it in several times to get it to charge. This morning, I plugged it in, at about 50% charge, hopped in the shower, got out, and when I checked my phone, it was at 25%, and was extremely hot to the touch. I immediately unplugged it and turned it off. It had a very strong electrical burning smell. I'm over this phone and will never purchase another Sony phone. It's a shame, because I do have brand loyalty, which means I'll being staying away from any other Sony products in the future.

Poor quality. Only a little past the warranty and sim tray has faulted. Sony won't do anything about it unless I pay but won't give me a price until they have seen the phone. Paid over £1100 for a phone that only lasts little past the warranty. Never had a sim tray fail. Obviously cheap parts. Will never buy Sony again.

Oddly enough after 2 years of solid use nad 2 weeks after it died this review equest came along. The phone is now trapped in a random reboot cycle and nothing I have done will fix it.. so s24 ultra is the new phone. However, while it latest this was a solid work horse. The camera was not as good as I hope and the night shots are a joke.

Having owned a Sony Xperia 10 iii before and wanting a bigger screen at not much more cost. This fitted the bill and Sony's outstanding tech is even better, if there was a criticism it would be that the Sony Xperia Companion computer app is no longer used to transfer your files over and it is all done via the cloud, this did take a couple of days to catch up, but when it did all of my apps came over.

Was a Sony Xperia user up to xz3 then switched to Samsung as the Xperia 1,I found not a patch on xz3 still use my old xz3 as still mint condition decided to give 1iii a go as headphone jack return and pleasantly surprised great phone fast and good battery life only gripe Sony should make a camera phone just to point and shoot as not all users are professional users which this device is designed for which is a shame sometimes you just want to pick up quickly and catch a shot which say pixel phone is good at

I bought this as I've owned multiple Xperia models previously, yet this one claims to work with T-Mobile and was a waste of money for a device intended to primarily be a phone. Yes, it is amazing aside from its extremely poor connectivity to T-Mobile, and I'll likely sell this online to try and recoup some of my hard earned (and hard-to-come-by) money. I can't believe the price of these things even on the secondary market, as they are nothing more than an Internet device and good camera. I'm so disheartened and upset that I sat in the phone with T-Mobiles top tier tech support for over 3 hours, and they couldn't do anything to make it connect properly to their network. I can't speak to other countries or service providers - but this purchase was a complete waste of my time and money. T-Mobile buyers in the USA beware and AVOID!!!!

First, the "5G" is not true 5G. This device only supports nationwide 5G and not the super fast mmwave technology. So I really don't see much of a difference in speed when i find a 5G network. Also, as Sony has advertised their audio capabilities of this device, I was left underwhelmed. I was using my Asus ROG phone 2 before this device, and my ROG phone continued to be my go-to for my audio listening needs. Don't get me wrong, the audio does sound good, but there are other devices that sound much better (in my opinion). Battery life is nothing great either, it's not bad, but average (unless you use the full resolution of the display, then battery drains considerably faster, which is one reason I bought this device). To the pluses. Again, battery life not bad, just not great either. Though my ROG phone 2 did have me spoiled with its massive battery. The display, is another story. The "4k" 120Hz display is simply gorgeous. And no other company renders motion on their displays better than Sony. This display simply is the highlight. It also has the top-tier SoC for this year which makes the device very fast and snappy. I am happy that Sony still supports the 3.5mm headphone jack, though I wish they would follow Asus' footsteps and include a quad DAC. The Xperia 1 iii also captures good images and video. I do feel the competition, like Samsung does capture better details, however I imagine if I were more into taking pictures I would get better with the software included. I do like, however, the more natural colors that the Xperia 1 captures. Overall, this is a great device that does a lot right. However, it is not without its shortcomings. For watching videos, movies, and such this is definitely the device to get. However, I just don't think Sony has done enough to really push themselves ahead of the competition, especially for the more premium MSRP that they set for their devices. I have had mine for just short of 2 years now, and it is still working minus the fingerprint scanner.

The phone has flaws , mainly with the torch not being very bright unless you take a photo and I've found that when I'm on speaker phone the microphone doesn't seem to pick up my voice very well. But overall the phone is brilliant it's quick I have more than enough storage and the compatibility wether that is from the headphone jack to an SD card slot is absolutely brilliant to have! I genuinely love this phone.

At Adorama's current price on this phone it's a no brainer! This has the most beautiful screen on any phone I've ever had! It's feels bigger in the hand than it looks (thank goodness because I have large hands). Also, a lot of reviews make it sound as though the device is just for advanced shooters but the jpegs OFC are quite good even in Basic mode. So don't let that steer you away from getting this great phone. Of course, you have fantastic controls at your finger tips too so you can grow as a photographer with the Xperia 1 III. As a long time Sony mirrorless shooter I have no qualms about recommending this model as a first time Sony phone.

This is my 3rd Sony phone coming from an XA2 and then an Xperia 5 MK1, the XA2 is what got me hooked really just because of the stock android UI and the design and build quality. Obvs as I went up the range all of those things have got better and I'm not sure if I'll change from Sony now. I have an iPhone 14 for work and it feels clunky and just run of the mill. I highly recommend any Sony phone but the Xperia 1 is brilliant!

I have upgraded from an Xperia 5 ii to the 1 iii because I wanted a larger screen. Sony phones are so well built, reliable and extremely functional. I like the frosted back to the 1 series compared to the slippery gloss of the 5. I would never have an Apple device and Samsung has lost the plot as far as I am concerned. Sony still allows you to connect jack accessories and you can expand the memory with micro SD cards. Why would a manufacturer stop you doing this? Oh, yes, to sell you cloud storage, if course! There are a couple of negative points that I'd mention. Firstly, Sony has done a real dirty on people by not including Sony Gallery on new devices. I don't want to use another Google app, so I've got to search for something else. Also, the vibrate alert function on the phone is useless. You cannot increase the intensity, nor change the pattern. May as well not have it, it is so weak.

I'm so excited for this phone but Sony please you really need to make your products available just after launch otherwise the hype will fade away and other competitors will actually make discounts in this time, and of course the pricing is a problem

this is beyond perfection sony is alwayes and forever the best
Speed and beyond
The Xperia 1 III combines its predecessor's remarkable AF speed with new optics reaching up to 105 mm. Together with the astonishing 4K HDR OLED 120Hz refresh rate display, and exceptional audio and gaming, this is a smartphone that goes above and beyond your expectations.
Experience breathtaking speed in everything you do
Speed is at the very heart of the Xperia 1 III experience-from the immersive 4K HDR OLED display with its rapid 120Hz refresh rate to the triple lens camera which features fast AF even when shooting extended telephoto.
For photographers
Professional technology from Alpha cameras
The Xperia 1 III was co-developed with the engineers behind the latest Alpha 9 series cameras, renowned for their industry-leading autofocus technology, and with input from professional photographers, who helped tune the technology and refine the photographic experience and results. Key features include fast AF in all three cameras, plus Real-Time Tracking technology for accurate shots of moving subjects.
Outstanding ZEISS quality in your Xperia
ZEISS optics calibrated specifically for your Xperia smartphone. The ZEISS T coating contributes to exquisite rendering and contrast by reducing reflections.
Four versatile lens options to unleash your creativity
Expand your creative possibilities with four versatile lenses in a triple camera and fast, accurate AF across all cameras. Thanks to Dual PDAF sensors, Continuous AF keeps focus on moving subjects, while Sony's unique telephoto system supports fast AF even at extended focal lengths.
Lightning fast focus, even at long range
An optical telephoto lens up to 105 mm with fast AF lets you capture moving subjects even at a distance. Crucially, the two focal lengths are included in one telephoto module, complete with Dual PDAF sensors. So when you switch between 70 mm and 105 mm, the focal lens unit and the AF lens unit work in unison to focus fast.
A wealth of creative opportunities
With four versatile lens options, the Xperia 1 III puts a huge variety of shots within your reach.
Real-Time Tracking keeps fast-moving subjects in focus
Now you can keep the most challenging moving subjects in precise focus. Using AI and a 3D iToF sensor to measure distance, Real-Time Tracking can accurately detect and focus on a subject, then keep on tracking it even if it temporarily moves out of sight. To specify your subject, simply touch it on the Xperia 1 III display.
Capture unmissable moments
Combining quick-fire 20 fps burst shooting with 60 fps continuous AF/AE calculation, the Xperia 1 III lets you capture images you wouldn't think were possible with a smartphone.
Capture the previously impossible with up to 20 fps AF/AE
With up to 20 fps continuous burst shooting, complete with autofocus and auto exposure, you can capture countless moments in seconds.
Up to 60 times per second continuous AF/AE calculation
The Xperia 1 III continuously calculates autofocus and exposure up to 60 times per second. And with new algorithms for AF precision and performance, you'll get clear, in-focus shots of even fast-moving scenes.
Burst shooting with less image noise
Using continuous shooting in a low-light situation Thanks to BIONZ X for mobile engine, the Xperia 1 III produces images with less noise than its predecessor when using burst mode in low light.
Experience Real-Time Eye AF-for humans and animals
Real-Time Eye AF lets you take stunning portraits, whether you're photographing people or animals. Even if your subject is on the move or one eye is covered, you'll capture memorable images full of energy and expression.
Photos with less noise in dark scenes
The Xperia 1 III has been designed to deliver great quality images even in low-light situations.
Great shots in low light
The Xperia 1 III has a larger sensor to capture more light, and BIONZ X for mobile to deliver outstanding results in all lighting conditions.
Get more clarity from a bigger sensor
Our 1/1.7" Exmor RS image sensor has larger pixels, which receive more light for better image quality.
Better light sensitivity with BIONZ X for mobile engine
The BIONZ X for mobile engine has a unique algorithm developed by Sony, for increased light sensitivity and images with less noise.
Fast AF with 3D iToF sensor
The Xperia 1 III features a 12 MP sensor, which offers reading speeds up to 3x faster than smartphone cameras with higher megapixel counts, and a 3D iToF sensor, which instantly calculates the distance between the camera and your subject. The result is fast, accurate autofocus in any scene.
Discover Photography Pro - inspired by Alpha
With Photography Pro on the Xperia 1 III, you'll find controls usually found on professional cameras. Using an interface inspired by Alpha cameras, you can choose manual controls or automatic settings and shoot in RAW. You can also enjoy new Basic mode for effortless shooting.
Complete creative control
If you've got a particular shot or effect in mind, Manual mode lets you fine-tune settings to suit your requirements. Just like a professional camera, you can adjust ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and more.
Professional editing
The Xperia 1 III lets you shoot in RAW format, which means you have all the original image data at your disposal. Unlike compressed image files like JPEGs, this gives you total control over the final results when it comes to editing and processing your shots.
For total convenience
Choose new Basic mode for fast access to a range of easy-to-use photography features including a touch shutter button, portrait orientation, Bokeh effect, Panorama, and more.
Dedicated shutter button
Just like a professional camera, the Xperia 1 III has a dedicated ergonomic shutter button, with an embossed finish for enhanced usability.
Digital zoom with uncompromising image quality
Unlike conventional digital zoom, which compromises image quality, the Xperia 1 III features new AI super resolution zoom, which uses Sony's AI processing to restore detail and definition to your pictures.
Create bokeh effects with basic mode
The Xperia 1 III makes it easy to capture striking images with artistic bokeh effects, adding another layer of creativity to your photography.
Capture smooth, stable video
The Xperia 1 III features the very latest Optical SteadyShot with FlawlessEye, which couples the image sensor's increased reading speed with Sony's original algorithm for optical image stabilization. The result is supremely smooth, shake-free video footage.
Discover even more photography features
To further enhance your photographic experience, you can use the Xperia 1 III remotely with your Alpha camera and as a professional-grade display.
Use your Xperia to control your Alpha camera
The Xperia 1 III is the perfect companion for Sony's Alpha cameras. Use it both as a separate display and as a remote control to adjust your settings and take photos wirelessly using the Imaging Edge Mobile app.
Fine-tune white balance for perfect results
The display supports professional level reproduction, enabling you to see accurate colors as intended and photographed. It also lets you calibrate the color temperature to D50 or D55, both suitable for checking paper printing.
For cinephiles
Immerse yourself in a 4K HDR OLED 120Hz refresh rate display
Boasting a stunning 4K HDR OLED 120Hz refresh rate display, the Xperia 1 III offers a uniquely immersive viewing experience. And with no notches to interrupt your view on the 6.5" 21:9 display, losing yourself in your favorite movies or TV shows has never been easier.
Professional level color reproduction
Experience unprecedented color accuracy with Creator mode "powered by CineAlta". Now featuring a specially calibrated D65 white point, it references the color reproduction of Sony professional color monitors used in leading Hollywood studio productions. So you can enjoy your favorite entertainment exactly as its creators intended.
Enjoy content as the creators intended
Now you can preset Creator mode "powered by CineAlta" as a default for your favorite content viewing apps. So you can enjoy your favorite TV shows and movies with colors reproduced exactly as the creators intended.
Smoother colors on screen
The Xperia 1 III features a 10 bit equivalent display (8 bit with 2 bit smoothing) that can display a wide range of colors without banding.
Professional-grade display
With a high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, the Xperia 1 III can present deeper levels of black, while colors appear more natural. The D65 white point has been specially calibrated for higher accuracy and the display also supports professional level reproduction standards, with wide color space ITU-R BT.2020, as well as DCI-P3 with Illuminant D65.
Everything you watch, remastered to perfection
The X1 for mobile engine brings BRAVIA HDR remaster technology to everything you watch. Even streaming content will have more contrast, color, and clarity.
Dolby Atmos sound tuned in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment
Watching a movie with Dolby Atmos is an immersive experience, with multi-dimensional sound flowing above and around you. Now you can experience Dolby Atmos sound tuned in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment with headphones or the Full-Stage stereo speakers.
