2015 Sony Flagship Still Running Strong

This TV has amazing picture quality. Backlit local dimming LED is hard to beat in terms of overall brightness, consistency and longevity. It's now two years old and this set still competes fine with 2017 models. (It is no longer the flagship model, the Z series has taken that title.) Sony has done well in updating the software and I hope they continue to do so in the future. I run this TV at 0 brightness, that's right, 0 out of 50, and it is still plenty bright for normal viewing. 4K HDR viewing is amazing, and ~30 is the brightest setting I need for HDR. It's only downfall compared to the 2017 models is the lack of future support for Dolby Vision. It would be great if Sony offered that possibility through a future 4K video player or add on. The sound quality is in a league of its own and while I have THX Select speakers, I rarely use them because the audio built into this TV is so good. The only downside of the TV is the occasional Android software issue which may require a "reboot" of the TV. If you think of this TV as a computer, it's not a big deal, but for old timers the idea of having to reboot a TV seems strange. It's an amazing TV, and I will be keeping it for a very long time.

Another Great Sony Model

I've preferred Sony televisions over their competition for decades. They continue to impress.

Extraordinary Quality and Worth it

This is the best TV I have ever seen for home viewing of compressed off air, cable or internet. I ran a Post Production facility for years and was a pioneer of HD post for movies and broadcast. I am used to looking at uncompressed images on uncompromising displays. This TV has all of the handles to adjust the image to suit any taste. The bandwidth available on most all of the tweaks is really extraordinary. The past 5 XBR's I have owned only offer 3 preset picture modes. This one has so many you can pick the features you like from many and incorporate them into a custom picture mode setting if you like. It would take a long time to go thru each individual setting since there are so many to make the picture perfect and to interpret what the settings do. This is highly compressed content after all. I created a custom setting in about an hour. The blacks will make you holler when you see them for the first few times on a really quality program. You can tweak out the annoying LCD artifacts almost completely which has been impossible in the past with any other TV. The first program I watched "Tyrant" using the "Cinema Home" setting and it was incredible with the way the blacks were posted and presented on this TV. Over enhancement is the enemy but this TV does it all. Cinema ones are great as they are with the two choices but not good for news and other non-color corrected content. Setting the maximum dynamic range is pure fun. I have only seen blacks like this on the best CRT production screens with uncompressed content until now. Wow.

Very Disappointed live TV and upscaling, returned

GOOD: streaming and movies - good image quality, upscaling was acceptable. BAD: live TV image quality especially from 720p source; Android OS is buggy and had to reset the TV various times; poor technical support We had this TV for 3 weeks. It is a substantial price to pay for a TV and one would expect satisfactory picture quality and customer support; unfortunately we didn't receive either. My wife and I had been looking for a replacement to our 5 year old plasma TV and after much research, reading reports and various store visits we decided on this TV. We noticed the poor image quality with live TV especially with certain channels, thinking the problem was our external configuration and not the new TV prompted 2 weeks of upgrades and adjustments to external components. During which time I adjusted every video and audio setting on the TV various times a day to try to improve the image quality and bringing it close to what we observed in the store but without success. We observed marginal image quality from 1080i TV channels but POOR upscaling from 720p TV channels. Streaming and movies were GREAT though. Through process of elimination we eliminated all the external components as being the source of the poor image quality and confirmed the source of the problem was the TV. I called the special Sony Hotline for 4K TVs and after 20 minutes of waiting and some discussion with the technician, she hung up on me! Not satisfied, I call back and thus started an 1 - 1/2 hour call with technical support that resulted with them saying 1) the problem was with my cable company and 2) I should call back in a couple of weeks to check on the status of my call! It struck me as an unusual request especially since two of the first questions that the technician asks you is: 1) the date you bought the TV and 2) where you bought the TV. With those two pieces of the puzzle they can quickly calculate if you are outside the timeframe to return the TV or not, which I unfortunately was and would seem to be the reason for the lack of assistance. When I called the place I purchased the TV explaining the situation they investigated and confirmed that I could return the TV that day. So, we boxed up the TV and returned it. I called the next day to enter another trouble report complaining about the poor technical support and offer observations regarding the Android OS on the TV. I was told that the call report was entered and I would receive a call from Customer Service within 48 business hours. It is now 3 weeks later and I am still waiting for the follow-up. All I can say is investigate and do not plan on any assistance from the technical support department, since all they can provide is "canned" responses.

A Revelation in 4K PQ and 3-D Immersion

This is without a doubt Sony's finest 4K Ultra HDTV to date. 4K images and video are a sight to behold. Colors are extraordinarily vibrant and pop with reality and detail. The 940C can be set very bright with no perceivable loss in detail. Blacks are inky with no loss of detail and there's very little or no haloing and absolutely no "IPS glow". No TV to date can produce a better full HD active 3-D image and it will leave you speechless. For example, IMAX: Hubble looks astonishing. There was no flicker, cross talk or ghosting. Even when challenged by older, restored content, the pop from 3-D Rarities will leave your jaw on the floor. The Android OS and some apps are still works in progress, but their hiccups don't detract from the 940C's overall prowess. Audio from the its front facing speaker system offered through Pandora or FLAC files streamed from a PC sound just as good if not better than many top rated sound bars. This TV reigns supreme among all other LCD's in 2015.

WOW

For the first time that I've bought a tv and set it up this model surpassed the hype of of its own advertising campaign.I have owned many flagship models from SAmsung L.G Phillips.Never have i turned on a set for the first and and been blown away by the overall picture quality and i haven't even turned the sound up or adjusted any of the endless picture and sound options. This tv is by far the best unit ever put on the market its twice as good as the 9000a model the this has replaced.Thankyou SONY.will write an in-depth review when I've worked out all the settings which could take while.

Dazzling - except for the stand

My "TV" stand is not quite as wide as this TV. My prior Sony TV had a pedestal stand, so it didn't matter. This one doesn't fit because it has these tiny budget stands on each end of the TV. That is my only complaint. Please go back to the pedestal stand (or offer it as an option) so we don't have to replace the TV stand when we decide to upgrade the TV. Other than the stand, this TV is outstanding.

This tv is so good, and performs so well...it is scary. 1984 ring a bell haha. It is smarter than some people i know, and every update get better and smarter. I joke, but at least the old plasmas ok great panel and all else sweet, but they are basically just a device on which to watch programs. From the hi res speakers, that i asap could tell are amazing as i could discern different tones and guitar sounds of my fave guitar player, to the point of coming w/in a year of the performance-he switched tones and sounds over the years. Someone said it is not loud, well it is very loud for some, maybe not so much for others, but the quality is right on. ok now what matters most picture quality, wow so far10/10. Although as Scotty once told Kirk, the fancier they make the cooking, easier to mess up the meal, but as long as it keeps working as it should, and especially once some more updates come for hdr, and some other apps, wow is it gonna rock even more. people can wait as of course every year there will be a super tv. this year of 2015, there may be some as good, but none better imho, save stuff over 20 g etc.. I may be not as picky as some but the speakers on the side are hardly noticeable and are great as i said. ok repeating myself. this tv, barring getting a lemon, is as good as it gets for under 8g. It better be, but happy to see Sony make great tv's as in the 70's and 80's they were the best, and happy to see them again make the best tv's. as long as it stays dependable, she's a winner. plus happy i sized up to 75 inches. thx sony, you gon this one right, knock on wood.

Nailed it!!!!

I thought last years 79X900B was a very nice set. Good colors, excellent upscaling, but only so-so black levels. When I read the specs for this set I was very much waiting for arrive somewhere so I could see it. Well, it did arrive , in my living room. The 940C is the best LCD set I have ever viewed. I was always a fan of Samsung and have had many (most recent un78UH8550. But this Sony easily surpasses that set. The black levels are inky black, the colors are rich, and the upscaling is still top notch. It is pricey, no doubt. But, if you simply have to have the best, look no further.

Most awesome Television!

This TV is incredible! Regular cable channels look much better. Watching Blu-ray movies on this TV, is very satisfying because of the upscaleing to near 4K quality. It's like having a new movie collection. The 4K picture is visual paradise. I have not seen any picture that looks this good, on any other TV, from the competition. I did months of research before I purchased this TV. With the sound system this TV has built in, you won't need a sound bar. Although adding the Sony subwoofer will kick it up a few notches. In my opinion, for the money, this is simply the best TV available! Do yourself a favor and check out this TV first, before you decide on which one to buy. After all it's hard to beat the company that invented 4K! Thank you very much Sony.

Really Close to 5 stars

UPDATE Pros: 4k picture fantastic, 1080 to 4k upscaling great, blu ray to 4k upscaling great Cons: Remote needs better shortcut buttons, sometimes to get best picture quality have to change settings during shows Picture Quality is 5 stars Up-conversion 4-1/2 stars Motion Settings 5 stars Audio 4-1/2 stars Sony has a reputation as one of the best tv's at upscaling content and since there still isn't alot of 4k sources this was important to me. I am thrilled at how well it upscales 1080 and blu ray sources. It's not as good at upscaling from sd quality. I had a 1080 set in one room showing Seinfeld and it looks a litter hazy in 1080 so I checked the same channel on this tv and found that while it was better it still had a hazy quality about it. Since getting this TV I have watched World War Z and Wrath of Kahn on blu ray both looked great. The upscaling really added to the picture quality. Both movies had no trouble with action scenes, no motion blur or judder. On the set top box I watched parts of Guardians of the Galaxy, Winter Soldier, Hobbit and Gravity. These also upscaled great. However winter soldier had judder and soap opera effect until I played with the settings. The colors were amazing in Guardians but again i had to play with the settings to make the colors pop. The high dynamic range is a great feature depending upon the source material . Some shows it helped making out the contrasts between the deep blacks and the bright lights. Again it takes playing with the settings to get the best out of this feature. Sometimes I was watching a dark indoor sequence and couldn't make out what was going on until I played with the settings to get better contrast. On the news of all places the brightness works so well it made the anchors lipstick actually glisten. I hope the upcoming HDR Firmware upgrade Sony promised will improve this already great feature. Trilumos colors. The tv has a setting that says 2020 implying rec2020 standard. I have no way to test this since I am unaware of any source material produced for rec.2020. I will say if you play with the color settings you can get some amazing results. The TV has around 12 picture modes to choose from. On many of these setting the brightness was too low for my taste making the colors seem darker or dull. On other settings the brightness was too high washing out the colors. Going into advanced setting I was able to get the colors the way I like it. In Guardians o the Galaxy, between the colorful aliens, spaceships and other effects the colors got a real work out and got to shine. 3D is not a big feature for us. We don't have a 3d player so used some apps in app store to test out. The hardest part was finding a quality 3d video to stream. After several attempts we found a short clip that did an impressive job. All the clips were very short so it is tough to rate this feature. Tried using cellphone an tablet as remote control and tv guide both features worked fine but prefer use of actual remote. As for the remotes they are a weak point. There is a one flick remote for use with the smart tv features and app store. It feels cheap and since those are features I don't use much I don't have much use for that remote. The primary remote sometimes is sluggish and other times works fine. It is easy to use. I would have liked if I could program some of the buttons for short cuts but was unable to do so. I mentioned there are many picture modes. I also mentioned that I would have to change settings depending upon what I was watching. To change settings I have to press the action menu then press the down button 3-4 times to get to picture modes then I have to press down up to 12 times to find the mode that fits the show I am watching. That is way too much pressing. There should be one button to scroll through those modes. In regards to the modes I like the vivid and standard mode the best. I still sometimes have to go into advance picture settings to do tweaks sometimes to color vividness which has multiple settings other times to modify motion scenes. Just wish there was a better way. I hope someones posts some good calibrations to modify these settings or I might have to break down and hire someone to set up two or three custom calibrations. In original review had issue with lip sync issues. This has been completely resolved. Sony had blamed the directv signal. Directv worked with me to fix it then later Sony had a firmware update that included a fix to hdmi lip sync issues. Regardless of whether it was a sony or directv issue, it currently is not a problem. I was happy to see that Sony Bravia Sync worked with my samsung blu ray player/AV. The HDMI/ARC recognized the blu ray and speakers and worked without problems. Setting up the entire TV was a breeze and I have had a software update adding netflix that works great. One other minor irritation is that while the TV comes with a few manuals, none of them explain the tv's many many features. When I flip through the picture adjustment or audio adjustment features there are dozens upon dozens of options to choose from. Sometimes when you highlight one, a one or two sentence description pops up but sometimes using jargon like judder. Trial and error can be time consuming with these features. It would have been nice to have a book that explained them all. I checked the sony site but i couldn't find one. I have talked to some reps by phone who do explain the features but sometimes they put me on hold so they can figure out what they do.

940c

Coming from last years 950b 65 inch I find the 75 a bit disappointing.the speakers have to be really load to be heard and the wireless sub that worked w the 900 series tv last year w the speakers doesn't with this one.they are also ugly, but downgraded from last years lower end tv because of the no sub ability. Picture is also downgraded from the 950b. The 950b is extremely bright where this one is darker like my pioneer elites. I bought it blind from magnolia as the set I got was going to be the demo set. I do regret the decision slightly as I wanted a larger version of the 950b w my main complaint of it fixed-the motion.while motion is improved I feel the picture quality was made a little worse w the size of the tv.that said the tv is still nice and not junk just disappointed in the picture and sound of it for a flagship tv.

Excellent 4k TV!! Best Ever!!

I play a lot of video games and my PS4 combined with the 4k up scale is spectacular. I also hooked up my computer with a GTX 980 graphics card and I'm rocking 4k resolution with no lag, screen tears or slowdowns right out the box!! My computer games look fantastic and my blu rays with 3d is the best I have ever experienced. I started going back and ordering more movies in 3d just to experience it again. When I first recieved this TV Netflix had not down loaded their app yet so I had to just use my PS4 to watch and the tv just upscaled the picture, now the updated app just dropped and netflix has movies broadcast in native 4k like Dare Devil, it looks phenominal and I'm totally wireless. You can also wirelessly send videos and pictures on your computer straight to the tv to watch. Best tv purchase I ever made hands down. I can't wait to get the 75 incher for my living room.

On Par with Samsung SUHD

Everything is amazing except one thing those side speakers, if they were made detachable like the Pioneer Kuro i would give this a 5 star rating. Find a way to remove the side speakers, the tv would look more attractive like samsungs js9500 sleek and sexy looking. Remove side speakers make detachable but keep the audio resolution the same

Best TV Ever

Truly Mind Blowing Picture Quality, Up scaling is Scary Good PS4 has never looked better, I have to watch every Blu-ray I own over again. The Speakers in this TV are awesome. I was very skeptical about how satisfied I would be with the built in speakers compared to my surround sound system before I bought this TV. I have since given my old Sony surround sound system to my sister. It's very nice not to have extra equipment. I did add the optional wireless subwoofer which does ultra low room shaking bass.

This TV is what the market wanted.

I will be clear with the audience first. I own the 65x950b and have loved it over the last year. I also have the top end Panasonic plasma from when those were a thing. Both 65 inches. Both used for a theater system and video games. Both hooked up to online computer games where lag matters. The panny does get a little darker but the contrast is more visible on the 950b. Also the 950b is the best 3d I have ever seen. My favorite scene to test the separation is tangled with the floating lanterns. Stars, dark, points of light. This TV (940c) speck wise is the 950b but with the speakers that are good. I should also clear the air and point out I sold these TVs. The reason I add this comment is because every day without fail when I sold 950b s I was asked why they did not come with the same awesome speakers. I had to explain they were for people who owned a higher end stereo system. By higher end I meed to say if you got your system from a standard best buy the TV was better. If you went to a specialty store there is a chance you would be interested. This conversation happened every day. I sold tons of x900b TVs as they just sounded so amazing and looked good too. the 950b was for people like me with outlandish hobbies. The picture was noticeably better but that sound. That sound in one package was the clincher. After looking at the specks this TV has better sound and the picture of the 950b. The item I was asked about daily. It is the solution customers wanted. They even upped the sound. I will not a few changes and features: The dynamic range is direct on this one like the 950. It is 3 times the contrast like the 950. The lower model is 2 times like the 900b. The subs are 1 cm larger than the 900b. (still magnetic fluid) The TVs no longer support 3d JPGS like those taken by the Nintendo DS or phones. (I do not even see these any more) No listing of camera and mic. (this feature actually scared customers away). same formats covered including triluminous. wireless now covers AC and all of old spectrum. same tuner. Does not upscale all the same stuff. went from a 2 chip solution to a one chip solution. the year prior it was a three chip solution. The prices have gone down thousands for this silly but essential upgrade. The 75 in here is the same as the 65in of the 950b. 10 in more and better speakers. fewer modes but the picture modes look more open to customers. (Sony is notorious for hiding picture adjustment menus) new Google OS (more apps, seriously the apps are a bit lame on the 950b but I have a computer attached so who cares) The one touch remote is gone. (This thing was really cool, you needed someone to show you how to use it but I sold 3 TVs over the comparable Samsung due to the remote.) In closing this TV is what the market wanted. Big, dynamic display, good sound, best apps system, cheaper, 4k and cut out the camera and other stuff to make a good TV. I hope this sells well. If it does not then why do companies listen to customers? I think this is a sign Sony listened and they should be rewarded. Then maybe we could get a display port :P

best TV on market

Last year's model of this type (the xbr65x900b# had the best picture I have ever seen on a TV #although the xbr65x950b was right up there with it.) Imagine how this new TV will look with the improvements in brightness, contrast, motion flow technology, back lighting, and size - all improved features of this 75" model over last year's 65". Plus, there is a better menu with the smart TV features. I do have a wish list...Have a smaller TV with 3x brightness, direct back lighting, and make those speakers optional. This TV has the best sound for any TV without extra speakers plugged in...however, most would prefer to save money on the TV and buy a sound bar or a surround sound system.

So near and yet so far

This is a very nice bang for the buck TV. Very good picture quality and motion (motion is rarely reviewed enough IMHO). I would have preordered it after seeing at CES except you can't remove the speakers. It makes it deeper and wider and bulky. Unfortunately the x910c has an inferior picture so if you want the flagship you have to pay extra for inferior speakers you'll never use with your surround sound system. Who gets a flagship TV and doesn't have a decent surround system. It would be tolerable if you could remove them. This is like getting a premium couch but it comes with toilet and an end table glued to it that you can't remove without destroying the structure and the material.
