Shopper : Can this filter be locked in place once the ND value is dialed in?DAVID P A : It does not have a lock in place ability. However it does stay in the ND value well.
Shopper : Will this filter allow the use of a lens cap or hood?JAMES S : No. use the optex hood hats. Neoprene, slide over the whole thing. They have a diagram you can download and print to match the size. I use them exclusively for all lens--can put the hood hat over the hood, no need for the lens cap. Rolls up into your pocketJOHN Y : No. The thread size is 77mm but the actual size of the filter it more like 85mm. It's too big for the OEM hood or lens cap. The light area of the filter you see in the photo is the size of the 77mm thread.DAVID P A : You can not use a cap or hood. The filter extends past the lens opening to help eliminate vignetting.CHRISTOPHER G : Unfortunately not. This filter extends out from the edge of the lens about 1/2 an inch all the way around. This prevents the lens hood from being attached when this filter is in use.

Among the best

Smooth and precise. Bested my previous Heliopan Vari ND in craftsmanship, although glass clarity is similar. What more is there to say, it works. Highly recommended for photo and video.

If you want a Vari-ND Filter this is it

I use this filter primarily for shooting water images with long exposures in hard daylight . The disclaimer that came with the filter claims that it works best at 50mm or greater. I find this to be true however, I have used it down to 24mm and It works well as long as you don't use the darkest setting. The optics seem very clear with no apparent vignetting. The ability of having multiple crystal clear reductions in stops with just one compact filter is is awesome. It is pricey but, in my opinion it is worth every cent. I only gave it four stars because nothing is perfect but, this come pretty darn close.

The Schneider 77mm True-match Vari-ND Thread-in Filter is a perfect choice for DSLR cameras with high ISO settings.
