Works as advertised.

I was going to recycle my old 20-year-old Asus P4P800 and then remembered I had bought this unit for another reason a number of years ago and never used it. I decided to swap out my old IDE drive for a SATA SSD and voila. Works great. That's it lit up on the IDE port of the MoBo. Not the only product I've bought from StarTech so wasn't surprised it would work.

This works, but the jumper switches are terrible

I have two of these adapters in different PCs to interface SATA drives to IDE and they work well. My only criticism is with the tiny jumper switches. They are too difficult to adjust. StarTech should redesign these jumpers.

Finally got it to work

I got it to work after many tries. First of all, all of the ports on the adapter and the hard drive need to be showing, so I finally figured out just to remove the drive and set it on top of the computer. I had no other drives installed. The connections are: adapter to IDE 40-pin, SP4 ("floppy") 4-pin power connector to the adapter, SATA cable from motherboard to adapter "to computer" orange port, SATA power cable to included SATA to LP4 molex cable, and then LP4 to hard drive power input. My drive was so old it could not boot but I was able to boot from DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) on a CD and erase the drive, which is what I was trying to do. Thanks StarTech! I have two drives to do so I will make a profit on this purchase (unless you count my time geeking out here).

Can't get it to work

IDE2SATA: I worked 4 hours trying to get it to work. I tried everything. My computer won't even get past the BIOS with this device attached. I tried every combo of the switches, even though the tiny print says it doesn't matter. 'Slave' is the only one that allowed me to access BIOS setup, where I saw that both drives were recognized. My hdd is supported too. The LED were blinking away, and the hdd was running.

Not quite as good as it appears

Could not get it to work using a 40pin / 80 wire ribbon cable. I bought it to share an existing IDE connection with a SATA disc drive. But it does not work, even with just the SATA disc connected via the ribbon cable and this product. Dip switch settings for Master or Slave make no difference. They appear redundant anyway, as tech support say the product cannot operate with another disc drive connected. Disappointed. I have not tried to use the product to connect a IDE disc drive to a SATA PC port.

Moronic installation guide

The guide mentions setting the DIP switch according to a diagram (step 1) The diagram does not exist. In step (4) it instructs the user to connect computer power supply to SATA hard drive but does not say with what or how?????????

A little misleading

Have not been able to use this as you need a 40 ide male connector to plug it into if you cant plug into the motherboard.

Worked fine. Just needed to fix my HDD

I bought this because I had an old IDE hard drive laying around for years that I needed to clean the data out of. Here is something to keep in mind... if you are connecting an old IDE drive up, be sure that the jumpers are set properly (if applicable). For some odd reason, one of my jumpers was in the wrong position, so I thought the adapter wasn't working at first. Once I noticed the jumper and fixed it, everything worked fine.

Wont work in new HP

I bought this adapter to transfer a WD-250GB to a new HP Z240 workstation. It isn't recognized. All cables are connected correctly and the Power Indicator on the Interface is lit. Hard drive spins up, but nothing is recognized by the computer. Not even in the Device Manager. No drivers to update and nothing else to change. I wont give it a Quality rating, since it doesn't work.

Only one that works with newer computers.

Only adapter we found that works with newer model computers. We use it in a classroom environment with removable IDE drives and it works perfectly

I bought this adapter to retrieve files from an IDE disk drive that was in an older computer that failed. Not having a system with IDE interface to connect the drive to, I needed the adapter to connect to a system with a SATA drive interface. The adapter worked perfectly. If the system that you intend to use this adapter in does not have a LP4 Molex 4 pin power connector for the IDE drive, you will need a SATA to LP4 Power Cable Adapter - F/M, which is StarTech product ID LP4SATAFM6IN.
