Questions & Answers

Paul B : Will this ring flash work with a Sony A camera hotshoe?GEORGE F : Looks like the SONY A uses the same hot-shoe as the RX100M2. That's the new intelligent hot-shoe. Then yes if will fit. I tried on my RX100M2 and it fits just fine.ROBERT N : It has been a while since I owned a Sony DLSR, if your camera has a standard hotshot, the ring light will fit. This ring light has its own battery supply and two brightness modes. It has worked great for me, since I am on a limited budget.Sheldon R : It should -- it does not communicate with the camera. It just fits into a hotshoe and a clamp locks it in place. If the slot is a standard size you are good togo.DANIEL L : This ring light operates independently of the hotshoe and therefore will work with any camera that has a hotshoe. It is battery operated and has an on/off switch with a high and low setting. It does not flash at all, so it basically functions as a ring flashlight. Your camera's hotshoe functions merely as a holder for it and there is no electrical connection between the ringlight and the camera. It is good for close up and macro photography only as it isn't all that powerful. Knowing these limitations, I've used it often and been pleased with it. But don't buy it thinking that you will be getting anything approaching a top-end ringlight flash. A hand held LED flashlight will do pretty much the same thing as this ringlight but will produce harsher shaddows.EDWARD H : I have no earthly idea. Nikon GuyBILL E : The only purpose of the part of the ring that attaches to the hotshoe is to hold the ring in place. There is no live transmission of the shutter fire to the ring. The LED lights on the ring burn continuously when turned on. So it will work with any hotshoe.P J C : The light is either on or off. I made the same assumption that it was a "flash". The light does illuminate well and have used it often with good results.LELAND N : Don't know. I shoot with Canons.Paul B : Thanks....I still think I need an answer from a Sony owner who has tried this as the hotshoe is configured differently on a Sony...(I understand it is only to hold the unit & not to fire the light which is turned on by a switch) Thanks againKENNETH H : Yes, this ring flash will work with any camera with a hot shoe, to hold the ring in position. This ring light doesn't "flash" when the camera takes the picture, since it is always "on" when you turn on the light. The camera just needs to meter on the object with the led lights shining on the object.KRISS S : It works with a normal camera hotshoe. I don't know what kind of shoe you have, though. Keep in mind that the light is not powered by the shoe, which only acts to hold the light.MICHAEL R : Yes. It is not a flash unit. There is a power switch with a high and low setting on the unit. Just mounts with the hot shoe attachment.
John Z : My cameral has no hot shoe. Does this light have a simple on-off switch?HECTOR S : @ John Z: Yes the Ring Illuminator has an On/Off switch but you still need the hot shoe to mount it on.CHARLES U : The unit has a combination switch for off, low and high. You do not have to mount it on a hot shoe. There is a 1/4x20 standard tripod mount in the base of the hot shoe. Understand that the ring light does NOT mount to a lens ring. You can position the light ring over the lens (shoot through it) or to the side.LISA F : Yes the Sunpak does have a switch. This is an "always on" led ring light. The hot shoe is actually just for placing the light on a camera, it does not trigger the Sunpak as it is not a flash. You can either hold it by hand, attach to a hot shoe, or it has threads to put it on a tri-pod or monopod. It requires 3 AAA batteries. If you look at the product photo, there is a switch on the top of the ring (just below Sunpak) with with three settings; Off, Low, High. The light works great in low light to help add light, in total darkness to aid in focus, and as an assitant to the pop-up flash. It also works well with a tripod for the whole setup for longer exposures.RAPHAEL B : yess it does. but it is held in place by attaching to the hot shoe so its use will be limitedKENNETH H : Yes, this light has a simple on-off switch. The hot shoe connection is only to hold the light in position.GEOFFREY K. P : Yes - it uses batteries, and has a three position switch: off, high, low. Works fine and quite useful.LEANDRA M : This is a AAA battery powered continuous light, with an ON-OFF switch. It is not controlled by a camera flash shoe. Think of it as a strange looking flashlight, with the batteries connected to the "lamp" end by a flexible tube. It does not need to be mounted on a camera & I frequently hand hold it at an angle to the surface I am photographing to show better texture. I have not used it as much as I thought I would because it is not bright. I usually need to raise the ISO to 800 to get a good handheld exposure at an aperture where I can get a good depth of field. Unfortunately, too, the multiple LEDs produce an equal number of distracting reflections on any reflective surfaces.WAYNE S : Yes. The switch has 3 positions: off, half power and full power. The hotshoe is only used for mechanical support. This can be used without mounting it on the camera.LELAND N : It has an on/off switch, but it does mount to the hot shoe bracket. The ring light does not screw on to the lens. The arm bracket places the ring light in front of the lens. A little awkward, but it works ok.RALPH L : I'm sorry, I didn't get the chance to use it yet. I have been i;; and just recovering. But will try to get trying in a couple of weeks. regrets.RalphWILLIAM B : YesSteven R : Yes it does. Item works fairly well for the price, but can create hot spots on reflective surfaces.BRIGID P : Yes! the shoe mechanism is simply to hold it in place and to hold the batteries, not to power it up.JOHN M : There is a switch to turn it on low and high and of course off. I do not like it as it does not fi on my hot shoe and is awkward to use. If you have the patience and are steady enough it works. Best regards, DisapointedPEDRO B : Yes it does.GARY G : Yes. The unit has a switch with settings of Off, Low, and High.JIM H : I bought this as a gift for my son. He is currently unavailable for a few days but I will forward the request to him. I have not used it personally.Sheldon R : Yes, it is a 3 position switch; off, low, hi. A hot shoe is only needed to mount the flash around a lens; there is no communication between the hot shoe and the camera. No communication is needed -- it is a continuous light device.DONALD M : Yes, on the ring.ALAN E : Yes, this light has an on-off switch. It only comes on if you move the switch to the on position. However, the light is meant to be attached to a camera's hot shoe so that the ring light can be positioned at the front of the lens.ROBERT M : Yes. It is not controlled by the hot shoe. I like this piece.MICHAEL R : Yes. IT can be handheld or mounted in a variety of ways. It also has 2 power levels on switch.KRISS S : Three position: Off - Low - HighJEROME M : Yes, it does have a on/off switch
Shopper : Did it last?ROBERT M : I don't use it very often, but I just tried it and it worked well. I like it and found it to be a good bargain.JANET V : I have had this for over a year. It has had very light use. It is still working well. I really like it for an extra light source, but it is bulky to carry.STEPHEN M : Yes it did last. I still have it but I never abused it when I used it. I used it for macro shots of bugs, small plants and that sort of thing. It's sort of cumbersome to use and often I just used little LED flashlights to increase the light. This was when I was in the shade. I have also used small mirrors to focus more natural light on the subject. Sometimes the ring just gets in the way. Use whatever method you can to get the proper exposure.Sheldon R : It works as advertised. It's not flimsy and I use it in two ways: attached to the hotshoe of my DSLR and also attached to a small table top tripod. I haven't tested it with my new PEN EPM1 yet, but I like how it didn't cost a million bucks to test LED ringlighting.MICHAEL R : My experiance has been very positive. The batteries seem to have a long life and unit has worked as I hoped it would. Plastic mounting base seems a bit flimsy but it has not been a issue, I am careful when mounting unit though.EDWARD H : I have never used it. It was too small in circumferance to act as the ring light I was hoping for.JEROME M : Yes, always carry it in my camera bag when I come across a great macro shot opportunity. For the price, very goodJOHN M : I like it. BUT it does not fit on the flash shoe of my Sony A55. I have to physically hold it in front of the camera. It is then a two hand balancing act.DEBBIE B : ItI purchased in 2010, and it is working awesome. For the price I feel this is a great bargin. I couldnt afford the expensive ones, but this one does a great job and is holding up great for the use I give it.ERNIE F : Yes it has held up very well. In fact I use it as a video light as well.WARREN K : Hi, Yes, it has lasted since July of 2010.P J C : Works very well. I thought it was a great buy for the price. Provides good even light with minimal shadowing.BILL E : It's lasted so far but I don't use it that often. I don't expect it to fail based on my experience...it's quite well made and simple. I keep it in my bag ready for those circumstances where only a ring light will provide the kind of even lighting needed for certain marco shots. It gets taken out and put back a lot because it sits in front of a lot of other items I use regularly and it always feels quite sturdy. And the price was outstanding.KRISS S : I have not used it much, so I am not a good one to answer your question. So far, however, I have not had any problems with it.

Ringlight not for portraiture

I bought this ringlight because it was supposed to have a filter thread of 67mm, the same as my 85mm. There are no threads at all on this light so it just kind of hangs there. It is useless with the 85mm which is why I bought it.I was planning to use this for portature but the LEDs seem too bright for the subject. IT is hard on the eyes. It did work better on my 50mm because it actually fit around the lens and could not move out of place or into the lens view area like it would on the 85mm. Plus I think the LEDs are a bit harsh for portrature. It works great for still life photography. Too bad I do not do much these days.

It works!

Since buying my macro lens I've been in search of the best lighting I can get with a limited budget in mind. I've tried other products but so far this is the easiest and least cumbersome solution. I shoot a lot of bugs and this allows me to get close without another piece of equipment in the way. I bought the step up adapter ring for my 100mm lens and it does a great job of keeping the ring light out of my shots. I had read some reviews where people said the light could creep into the shot without the photographer being aware of it. The adapter was well worth the few extra dollars. I would recommend the ring light and adapter ring.

Good LED Ring Light For the Money

I have not used this a lot yet, but it seems to do a good job of lighting macro subjects. It is a very affordable alternative to the very expensive, dedicated macro flash units.

Great Product from Sunpak

This product was invaluable while photographing small jewelry items, coins, stamps and just about every small item I put it over. Outdoors it was great while shooting insects and flowers. The two output settings it offers are suitable in a large variety of situations. For the price it is just a remarkable addition to my tool kit.

Was well worth the money.

Works great when photographing gem stones, coins, other small items. Worked well for portraits and all macro photos so far. Looking forward to spring and the small wildlife that abounds here. One of the best investments I have made.

Worth the price

While not as bright as might be desired, this does work well for closeups. My biggest complaint is that the ring does not fit even some smaller lenses, and there is nothing to hold it onto any lens. Some simple rubber ring might help here. Nontheless, it seems well worth the relatively small price.

A cheap alternative

If you have plenty of room to maneuver, this will get light to your small subject. If there is anything in view that reflects, you might get a small ring of lights in your photo. Overall, it does the job for some close-up work.
