The ball head works quite well. I did notice that the design has changed a bit. Overall this is a real workhorse and for a lot less money than the very similar Really Right Stuff Ball head.

Initial impressions: This ball head is even nicer than it appears in the photo. The matte finish is on a par with high-end tripod item, as is the finely-machined solidity of the ball head as a whole, although I wish it did not have the exposed screw over the logo. The quick release clamp is solid and smooth, and requires barely 2 seconds more to attach or un-attach than a lever-release. The unit as a whole holds my Pentax K-1 and a 28-70mm/2.8 with ease. Not a hint of movement after I frame up the shot and lock it in place, even in portrait mode. The 88 lb rating is explained in the instructions. The ball head will hold 1/5 of the maximum load in the portrait position, which is 17.6 lb. I would consider 17.6 lb to be the true rating for this item, which is what the RRS BH-40 is rated at. Also, I don't notice that the ellipsoidal shape of the ball makes any tangible difference in the movement of the camera, even when I drop it into a slot. The drop-down slot puts the camera just past 90 degrees. By adjusting the tripod legs, or using a levelling base, the drop-down slot could be used gimbal-style, like an Acratech. Overall the movements are smooth, but not as smooth as my RRS BH-55. Maybe it needs breaking in. Still, it is an excellent product.
