I mainly take photos of rocks, fossil and minerals. I like to start out by making sure my camera is parallel to the copy stand base. rotating the camera E-W is easy enough to do, but I found that I had to remove the rubber pad on the camera mount and loosen the screws on the mast and shove some laminating strips under the front of the mast to rotate it back so I can get close to parallel N-S. Annoying, but not enough to send it back. There should be an adjustment on the mast like my ancient copy stand. Also, I would like to see the camera mount made of metal, not plastic. Other than that, I like the led lights and the ease of sliding the camera up and down on the mast.

In the days before Powerpoint I created slide presentations on a very high end precision copy stand with back lighting as well as arm lights. When Powerpoint came along it more or less ended the age of the slide presentation. However, artists began bringing in their oil paintings, watercolors and the like wanting a high resolution copy for making prints of their work to sell online to interior decorators and the general public. So I concluded that I was taking up a lot of time setting up an easel and lining up the camera square to the art. So I looked around on line, did a little research and concluded that the Smith-Victor was ideal for this type work. Going back to my early days as a photography student working in various professional studios - I can not remember working in a studio that did not have a Smith-Victor product either in the studio or darkrooms. So when I ordered the Smith-Victor copy stand - I was amazed at how well it was packaged - this is important in today's rapid delivery services - boxes get banged around so - but the Smith-Victor was well packaged. I set the copy stand up and was very easy to assemble - I suggest using one of the corner protectors that come attached to the baseboard to set under the shaft to line it up with the base board to line up the bolts perfectly - then make sure you square up the shaft to the baseboard before tightening the four bolts. So after assembly I mounted my camera to do a test shot. Neaarly perfectly square and even corner to corner on the very first test - I will adjust and tweak it to perfection based on the test. The shaft release works very smooth and I actually like this feature better than a crank. My camera with lens weights a good 3 pounds - yet the Smith-Victor holds it tight and steady. I will most likely bring in other studio lights - depending upon the size of the art work - however, the lights provided do an excellent job with good white light when using a micro lens. I am very pleased with the Smith-Victor and it is already making money and saving me time. I have an up coming assignment with an supply catalog with a lot of flat products and product textures - by the end of that assignment the Smith-Victor will have paid for itself. The quality of this stand seems to be good enough to last many years of use. If you are in the market for a general purpose copy stand then, I highly recommend the Smith-Victor - you will be pleased. Attached test shot without adjustments.

This was perfect for what I needed for my classroom. It is all set up and the students are so excited.
For professionals seeking precision in reproducing photographs, artwork, and other objects, the Smith-Victor 42" Pro-Duty Copy Stand Kit is an all-inclusive solution. This professional-grade system is designed with a robust baseboard, boasting a non-reflective 18% gray matte finish. Measuring 23.5x23.5", it's perfectly suited for originals up to 16x20".
The baseboard also features a printed grid, ensuring accurate placement of originals every time, enhancing the efficiency of your workflow. The column, constructed from heavy-duty extruded aluminum, is designed to minimize vibration, a key factor in achieving the sharpest images possible.
The anodized aluminum column is also marked with a height scale, adding another layer of precision to your work. The copy stand's unique carriage system eliminates the need for cranks or knob tightening. A simple squeeze of the lever allows the carriage to slide up or down smoothly and quickly. Upon release, the carriage locks at the desired height, securing your camera for use.
The carriage is equipped with a standard 1/4"-20 mount, accommodating any camera and lens combination up to 8lbs. To ensure optimal illumination of the original, the kit includes two fully adjustable mounting arms and two compact flat panel LED lights.
These LED lights deliver high output, providing smooth and even illumination across the baseboard. With a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 95, they guarantee accurate color rendition of the copies, true to the originals. The LED panel lights are also energy efficient and emit low heat, safeguarding delicate originals from potential heat damage caused by traditional incandescent lights.
In summary, the Smith-Victor 42" Pro-Duty Copy Stand Kit is a comprehensive, heavy-duty system designed for professionals who demand the highest quality results.
