Questions & Answers

GEOFFREY D : Can CFL and LED bulbs be used with these?ACCOUNTS P : I purchased the same light kit which comes with 2-250watt photoflood bulbs. While researching I found that some other people were using LED because the bulbs do not get as hot. I have considered this, but heard that you get less light output. I don't see why you could not also use CFL bulbs. The kit has medium screw base phenolic sockets according to the specs. Hope this helps.
Shopper : Can you also use this type of lighting for a youtube video?? or is it just for pics?MELISSA D : I would recommend it but more light would be more effective. great set though.C ROSS D : Most of my work is video. I use this type of lighting for interior night scenes. It is continuous lighting and works well for video.JEFF T : I think you could, be nice to have more powerfull bulbs for video. The umbrellas allow flexibility, one light as main and turn the other away with umbrella fill light. They did what I wanted for portrait. Easy to set up and adjust.DAWN K : Hi. I don't see any reason why not. They are plenty bright enough. You can't light up a huge area, say for a bunch of people running around and dancing.JAMES A : Hi, This will work for both. CAROLYN M : I use it as an accent light for oil painting. If your subject is within a few feet of the lamp you may find it gives you enough light for a video, however I have never tried that. It's a good product.SARAH N : I remembe reading that these lights could be used for video or photo when I decided to purchase them. Honestly though, I often have thought these must be better used with video as they are rather dim and difficult to use for photographic lighting. For the awesome low price they have been a great addition to my photography arsenal nonetheless.KEITH W : It's a "constant on" light rather than a strobe so it would be fine for video work.
JIM R : Help, What do I do? Do I point the floods with unbrella towards the subject. Or do I point the flood away from the subject into the unbrella. I did take some wonderful pics pointing yhe flood into thr unbrella all aiming at the subject? JimJAMES G C : The real advantage of the kit is that you have many combinations which you can devise. I have found that there is no standard way of using the lights because of the many variables present when you set up for photos. The light in the room or area in which you are taking the photos often influence the photos as do background shadows. Experimenting in the set-up process of the lights often will often help you decide on light positions. If you are taking wonderful pics now I believe you have a good base from which to experiment by trying other positions and options!DAVID F : The light points at the umbrella and the umbrella points toward the subject. The parabolic reflector directs it straight forward and diffuses it slightly. I recommend you get a book on lighting from the library or look up lighting techniques online, as there are many ways to use your lights.CHRIS F : Point and position the lights where ever you get the lighting you want. There is no set rule as to where the lights are to be placed. There are a million options, you can have one light close to the subject shooting through the umbrella and the second light away from the subject with light reflecting off the umbrella. Move the lights anywhere you like to get the effect you want.KEITH W : Aim your lights at the subject, these are "shoot through" umbrellas.

You can get excellent results!

Get nice portraits perfomed indoors, using one or both lights at time. Umbrellas are a bit flimsy, but ok. Be carefull, after a while these lamps get hot. ;D

Cheap - No Instructions

I bought this product as a starter kit. It had no instructions, and too many parts to figure out on my own. I exchanged it (plus $7.00) for the Photo basics version. Wow, what a difference. It was way better made, and easy to assemble. Don't waste your money.

Great when you need just a little extra

I was shooting individual and team photos of hockey teams and the lighting in the rink was horrible! I bought these and they did just the trick. I needed something lightweight and portable, easy to setup, because I had little time to get out and arrange lighting on the ice. These were so easy to use. The bulb on one of the lights did blow pretty quickly but other than that these were a perfect inexpensive way to get better picture. Watch the white balance though.

The price is right

The itself is really worth the money. The only problem is that the attachment of the light itslef to the stand is not secure. You can tighten it has hard as you want but half way through your shot it may losen. It's not going to fall off the stand of anything. But it pretty riskey forr being as high as it is.

Nice studio light setup

These studio lights create a great, flexible work area to shoot catalog pictures. They will also save lots of time by reducing the amount of color correcting needed when photos are taken with flourescent overhead lighting.

A Great Starter!!!

This is a great starter lighting kit for indoor video filming. I use it for green screen backdrop fliming. It's bright and the umbrellas give off a natural bright light. I highly recommend this as a starter kit.

Smith Victor KT500U Light Kit

Just put together a Photography Studio in a room above my garage and used the new lighting to do portraits of family and friends. With little effort and proper placement of the subject kit items I produced some great portraits. I would recommend the kit to all beginning photographers.

This kit is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of continuous lighting for photo and video shoots, ensuring that every shot is illuminated to perfection.

Crafted with durability in mind, the KT500U features hand-spun reflectors constructed from high-strength aluminum, ensuring longevity and consistent performance. The interior of each reflector is chemically etched to achieve maximum light dispersion, casting an even and broad light across your subjects. The exterior boasts a sleek, photographic black baked-on enamel finish, which not only looks professional but also minimizes any reflections or glare that could affect your lighting setup.

The versatility of the KT500U is unmatched, thanks to the inclusion of two umbrellas - one silver and one white. These umbrellas provide photographers and videographers with the ability to modify the quality and direction of light, from a soft, diffused glow to a more focused and intense illumination. This adaptability makes the kit suitable for a wide range of scenarios, from portrait sessions to product photography.

High-quality lighting is a signature of Smith-Victor products, and the KT500U is no exception. The 500-watt photoflood lamps deliver a powerful and consistent light source, ensuring that your images and videos are captured with clarity and precision. The kit's adjustable Raven RS6 and Raven RS8 stands, which telescope to 6 feet and 8 feet respectively, offer additional flexibility, allowing you to position the lights at the optimal height for any given subject.

Portability is also a key feature of the KT500U. The included sockets, cordsets, and the "Imaging with Light Guide" provide all the necessary tools and information to get started, making it a comprehensive lighting solution right out of the box.
