This is my 3rd DX517. It is expanding the capacity of a DS1817. The other two are connected to DS1819+s. It's a solid unit and system is easy to configure.

This expansion box worked great out of the box. Packed well per Synology standards. Easy to connect, Power and SATA cable. DSM recognized the expansion unit automatically. I used this for a DS1817+ and will be adding another one soon to a DS1819+.

Ran out of room on my DS918+ w/4 8TB HDs, so it was time... I personally feel the cost of this unit is rather high, given that it's basically just a box to hold additional drives. That said, it's cheaper than replacing the DS918+ (or the drives installed in it). Setup is easy and the Volume rebuild (I'm using SHR) took about 2 days to assimilate the new 8TB drive. I also now have the ability to expand another 32TB if needed (ahem). Bottom line: works as advertised, easy to set up & gives you a LOT of room to expand...

Great unit. Worked flawlessly with the DS716+. Added 5x4TB in R6 config. When volumes are created on the DX517, its power button becomes useless because the power button of the main unit (in my case, DS716+) will control both units. The price point for an expansion unit is a little high seeing as a new DS1019+ was only ($) more and includes CPU+RAM.
