Review Summary

I have had this mic for a year now, and now that I have had a chance to hear the TAC700 from Turnstile audio myself in my home recording setup, I can verify that the TAC700 is definitely worth the small extra outlay of cash. The TAC300 sounds fine. If you are used to something like the Audio-Technica AT2020 and loved the sound of that mic, but couldn't afford to pay $99 for one, this is the mic to get. The capsules are similar electret designs to the ones in the AT2020 and the sound from the TAC300 is on par with that mic. But if you have noticed and loved the extra finely detailed, and nuanced sound that just spending a little more cash and getting a true large diaphragm, true condenser microphone like the TAC700 can bring you, (not to mention the flexibility of the extra polar patterns in the case of the TAC700) and sonically it is a pretty notable difference, even when listening in headphones like the Turnstile Audio TAPH700 (another huge bargain product that punches way above its price point), then spend the extra little amount and buy the TAC700. However, if you are on a shoestring budget, are using a really cheap interface with not so good electronics and pres, and that extra $10 for the TAC700 is going to break your budget, then the TAC300 will suit you just fine. Only reason it only gets 4 stars is that the next step up in their line is only $10 more and is a way better microphone, both in terms of detail, nuance, clarity, and refinement, as well as flexibility.
