I've had extensive experience with this filter for B&W film. It is especially good for increasing contrast in blue skies with clouds as it darkens the skies somewhat and has the effect of brightening the white clouds against the darker blue sky. It is also good for lightening red colors against green colors. Example - an apple tree...it will lighten the red apples while darkening the green leaves increasing the contrast between the two so the shades are different.

An essential tool for photographers aiming to elevate their black and white imagery, the 40.5mm #15 Glass Filter - Dark Yellow is a durable and high-quality accessory that offers a multitude of filtration effects. This filter is adept at contrast control, enriching skin tones, and facilitating precise tonal corrections, leading to more striking and dramatic landscapes.
Crafted by Tiffen, a reputable brand in the photography industry, this filter is recognized for its effectiveness in enhancing the visual appeal of images. The dark yellow hue of the filter is particularly effective for black and white photography, where it serves to naturally intensify cloud formations against the backdrop of a vibrant blue sky, providing a classic and timeless look to your photos.
Versatile in its application, the filter can also be utilized as a creative tool in color imaging. Its single-coated yellow color is not only effective for black and white film but also adds a unique vibrancy and contrast to color photographs. It darkens blue skies, making white clouds pop with a brightened contrast, and is especially good for lightening reds against greens, as noted by photographers who have captured stunning images under the vast Big Sky of Montana and in other diverse settings.
The Yellow 15 variant of this filter series goes beyond the capabilities of the Yellow 8, offering more pronounced effects that are ideal for landscapes, marine scenes, and aerial photography. It is also recommended for use with Kodak Aero Ektachrome Infrared film, where it can cut through haze and reduce the excess blue often seen in astrophotography and full moon captures.
Photographers seeking to achieve a distinct separation of colors and a dramatic increase in contrast will find this filter to be an affordable yet invaluable addition to their gear. Whether you're capturing the subtle nuances of an apple tree, with its red fruit standing out against the green foliage, or aiming for the perfect tonal balance in a marine scene, the 40.5mm #15 Glass Filter - Dark Yellow is an effective and versatile choice for both amateur and experienced photographers alike.
