The transition area in soft-edge filters ranges from 1/2" to 2" wide before reaching full density, depending on the filter size. Hard-edge filters, on the other hand, have a transition area approximately 1/4" to 1/2" wide before reaching full density. There are also special order attenuated gradients, where the transition occurs throughout the entire filter, starting clear and reaching maximum density at the opposite end.The choice between a 'hard' or 'soft' edge largely depends on your lens type and the subject matter. Telephoto lenses, which utilize a small portion of the filter, are best paired with hard-edge filters. Conversely, wide-angle lenses, which make objects appear smaller, are better suited to soft-edge filters to avoid a harsh straight line effect.
