About Tiffen Square IRND Filter

Become a master of outdoor photography with the Tiffen 4x5.65" Combination IR 85 and 1.2 Neutral Density Filter. This high-quality, durable filter is designed to tackle the challenges of using tungsten film in daylight, which can often result in a bluish cast in your photographs.

The 85 series of filters, known for their effectiveness, work to color balance the tones in your images, correcting differences in color temperature between the recording medium and the light source. This is particularly important in digital photography, where color shift can significantly impact the quality of your images.

This versatile filter also addresses the issue of infrared contamination, a common challenge in high-definition photography. The sensitivity of imaging sensors to IR can be problematic, especially when using standard neutral density filters that absorb visible light but pass infrared.

The Tiffen 4x5.65" Combination IR 85 and 1.2 Neutral Density Filter, however, is designed to combat this issue. Unlike many photographic films, the CCD or CMOS of a digital camera is inherently susceptible to infrared contamination. This reliable filter helps to reduce this problem, even when the manufacturer attempts to reduce this problem by adding an infrared absorbing filter on top of the image sensor.

The filter does not have a sharp cutoff at the infrared wavelengths, resulting in a compromise in order not to exclude visible red wavelengths. This allows some infrared wavelengths to pass, minimizing the issue of infrared contamination, especially when using conventional neutral density filters of denser grades.

In summary, the Tiffen 4x5.65" Combination IR 85 and 1.2 Neutral Density Filter is a reliable tool for photographers seeking to improve their outdoor photography, offering a solution to the challenges of color shift and infrared contamination.

Tiffen Square IRND Filter Features

  • An 85 decreases the color temperature from 5500-3400 Kelvin
  • To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
  • To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
  • To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
  • To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
  • Tiffen filter is manufactured using ColorCore technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between 2 pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings
  • The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations
