With the Tiffen 49mm 80A Tungsten to Daylight Conversion Glass Filter, you can effortlessly adjust the color temperature of your light source from 3200K to 5500K. This high-quality and durable filter is specifically designed to correct the use of daylight film with standard household incandescent lamps.
Featuring a filter factor of 2.4, this versatile tool requires an additional 1 1/3 f-stops of light. It's an essential accessory for photographers and filmmakers who understand that all light sources, whether natural or artificial, have unique characteristics that affect color rendition on film.
Most films are engineered for either daylight or tungsten photofloods, which are rated respectively at 5500K degrees (daylight) and 3400K degrees (photofloods) on the Kelvin(K) color temperature scale. This Tiffen filter is an effective solution to 'warm', 'cool', and correct for the many variations of lighting you might encounter during your shoots.
All filters have a 'filter factor', a measurement of the light they absorb. Cameras with internal metering (through the lens) will automatically adjust the exposure, making this filter easy to use. For those using external or handheld meters, remember to allow for this factor.
It's worth noting that modern strobes (flash) are approximately 5500K and will 'overpower' household lighting. With daylight film, no filtration is necessary unless special effects are desired. The 80 series filters, including this 80A model, come in several strengths and are available in most sizes.
Other 80 series filters include the 80B for use with tungsten photofloods and the 80C for use with clear flash bulbs. Other useful color correcting filters are the 85 series for tungsten film in daylight (the opposite of 80 series), the 81 series for a warming effect, and the 82 series for a cooling effect (the opposite of 81 series). The FL-D (daylight) is ideal when using daylight film in fluorescent lighting, and the FL-B (bulbs) is perfect when using tungsten film in fluorescent lighting.
In summary, the Tiffen 49mm 80A Tungsten to Daylight Conversion Glass Filter is a high-quality, durable, and effective tool for photographers and filmmakers seeking to achieve the perfect color balance in their work.
