Tiffen filters are inexpensive enough to not really worry about if they get scratched. I'm replacing one that's almost thirty-five years old - it's fallen out of the mount so many times I can't count. The ring that holds the glass in finally gave out.  Anyway, for less than twenty bucks, this filter is a steal.  You need one if you shoot panchromatic black and white film, as it reduces excessive blue, and makes skies turn out naturally.  Slight lightening of greens, but not excessive.  If you shoot b/w a lot, just leave it on.  FYI, if you shoot Fomapan 100, remove this filter, as Fomapan doesn't require a K2 filter (unlike most other b/w pan films).
