ROBERT Z : Should I buy a clear or uv filter as a protection?PETER W : The UV filter is clear and is typically used for protection as well as reducing haze.LLOYD K : A UV filter will help a little with filtering out UV rays from sun, but most of us use it as lens protection. I'd recommend using the UV, not just a clear cover.DANA N : If you just want to protect the element clear is fine. I find that the UV cuts out haze and makes the clouds and scenery stand out a bit more. For indoor photography clear would be fine.REED R : UV is probably better, but buy a better quality filter as I experienced reflections with this one.DOUGLAS C : I would advise NOT buying a filter at all as 'any' glass in front of a 'good' lens is going to degrade it. That said .. if you MUST buy a filter for protection; Buy the highest quality filter you can afford .. Hoya HD2 for example .. a 'clear' filter is best (in my opinion) as the 'UV' thing is more of a 'relic' of the film days. The 'useful' filters that should be considered are Circular Polarizer (CPL) and ND (neutral density) filters which can produce very useful effects in the field that are hard to duplicate in "Post" ... If you buy 'new' lenses always get an "accidental handling" warranty on them .. store them with a lens cap (when no in use). Get as much knowledge about filters and their uses as you can, before making an 'expensive' decision.GALEN H : Clear is fine for just protection but if you want to add a little clarity or contrast to you images without post processing, then UV is the way to go.

Great filter that I use shooting into the sun

I frequently take pictures at competition shooting matches and the sun can wreck havoc on my photos. I keep this on the lens 100% of the time and it tremendously helps me with glare. I do not get to choose my shots as they are determined by the match designer. So I have to use all the tools available to ensure successful photos.

Works Great & Protects my lens

I have this on my Canon Macro 100MM f2.8 IS USM lens. I used the lens and filter for an eyelash product shoot with a model. The photos came out great and the client is very happy. I bought it to keep dust off my lens and protect the front elements. So far so good. =)

First filter to think of

I always put a UV liter on each lens both for the filters beneficial effect and to protect the lens. I have Tiffen and Hoya filters on my old film SLRs and the Tiffen ones are a great value. I did pick up some "off-brand" filters once but threw them in the bottom of a storage bag. Tiffen filters are a great bang for your buck.
