It's also an excellent solution for achieving balanced exposure in uneven lighting situations. Tiffen Color-Grads are available in a broad spectrum of sizes and colors. They are designed with either soft edges, where the transition area is between 1/2" to 2" wide before reaching full density, or hard edges, where the transition area is approximately 1/4" to 1/2" wide before reaching full density. Special order attenuated gradients are also available, where the transition area spans the entire filter, starting clear and reaching maximum density at the opposite end.When using rectangular-shaped filters, such as the 4x5.650 (Panavision size), the orientation of the filter in relation to the camera is crucial when the grad line is horizontal. The terms vertical and horizontal are used to describe this relationship. The choice between a "hard" edge or "soft" edge Tiffen Color-Grad filter depends on your subject matter, its surroundings, and the type of lens you use.
