Looks like a filter. Works like a clear filter. Canon lens cap does not sit very deep in the threads, barely attaches really,,,But has not popped off yet.

Always use a Tifen UV filter on all my lens as added protection for the expensive glass behind the filter. The filter adds no aberrations and is easily removed to swap a polarizing filter.

There is no way to attach the lens cap to the front with this filter installed.
