All lenses need a protective lens to keep clean and maintain the quality built into such expensive products. This skylight lens does just that, working as a skylight filter as well as a protective covering for my lens. I am assured now, while using this filter, that my camera will be ready to go. Is this a necessary product, yes, it is!

I never use any lens without having a protective filter on it, and Tiffen filters remain an excellent value. Don't leave home without them!

I use this filter for everyday photos. Protects lens and adds a very slight warmish tint to photos. Especially good for outdoor shots; eliminates the bluish cast on those shots caused by sky reflections and UV light.

Finding a skylight filter in a 55mm is no longer as easy as it once was. Apparently many manufacturers now try to substitute their UV in that size. Fortunately, Tiffen still makes one. I've used Tiffen filters before and have never been disappointed with them. I've photographed most of the major national parks in the U.S. and Canada and a skylight is an asset on overcast days and provides lens protection the rest of the time.

First things first...I am a former professional photographer and taught photography at the university-level. I still cling to film cameras as I can't tolerate "Delete" buttons on a camera. My use of Skylight filters are first, to protect my aging equipment that is getting difficult to replace, and second, for the UV absorption. I have heard it stated that if you put a filter between your lens and your subject, you risk degrading the photograph due to imperfections in the filter. Yeah, yeah, right. Modern manufacturing has more or less blown that argument out of the water. Glass from a quality company is better now than ever before. Which brings us to the TIFFEN Skylight filter. I would rather have an inexpensive filter, (as compared to the cost of a lens), on the front of my lens and let it get the dirt and grime of a days shoot on it than on the front element of an irreplaceable lens. The TIFFEN Skylight filter is a well constructed piece of glass that will take the abuse and once it gets to where it could degrade the image due to scratches or a worn coating, throw it away and get a new one. Simple. Another aspect is protecting the rim of your lens. I would rather get a ding on the filter than on the front of my lens. We all get clumsy at times and the addition of a skylight filter adds a layer of protection to your investment. It has happened to me...one broken skylight filter beats damage to a front element. Though the UV absorption is minimal, there is a noticeable difference with and without, especially outdoors. The colors are more saturated and not as washed out unless you inadvertently overexpose, then nothing can help. Lastly, I really don't think there is anyone who can look at a photograph and say "that was taken with a filter over the lens". The majority of people take photos for pleasure. What they produce will never hang in a gallery...even the photos made by the people who scoff at the use of filters. Protect your investment and use a TIFFEN Skylight filter and there are enough benefits to justify it.

Looked around and this was the best deal on this product at the time. A well-made filter at a good price. Used to protect the lens and retractable cover on my Canon HD video camera (had a repair shortly after receiving it due to debris in the lens area not allowing the cover to close).

I use this filter as a protection filter. I purchase one anytime I buy a new camera, or a lens, and install a UV filter on the lens immediately! I don't believe in cleaning the prime optic for fear of damaging the protective coating. I may clean the prime lens ONCE, but never again. Hence never had a problem with any on my lenses for over 45 years.

Bought a new (used) lense nad I consider a protective filter essential equipmment. Have used Tiffen filters since the 1970s when my interest in photography began. I still have all of the tiffen filters that I ever purchased.
