Questions & Answers

MICHAEL D : Would I want to keep this filter on my lens all the time, whenever I am outdoors in bright sunlight?DEBBIE R : No, it would depend upon the situation--where the light was coming from, how bright it was. I would tell you to experiment. Don't forget that you can plus down or up with your camera according to the brightness of the sun.THOMAS K : not necessarily. while the filter reduces the amount of light allowing use of a larger appature at a given shutter speed and ISO, if you want to take a picture having a large depth of field i.e. smaller appature, depending on the lighting and ISO the sutter speed maybe slowed to a point where camera shake will cause blurMICHAEL D : Thanks to all of you who answered my question. I now have a much better understanding of the filter and it's useLEIGH G : No, you would not want to leave it on all the time. This filter blocks 3 stops of light. If you can't get the shot you want by using a faster shutter speed, smaller aperture, or changing your ISO, then you might want to stop down the light with a neutral density filter. But starting with the filter on will limit your options.ROBERT K : Yes, you would, provided the light is very bright. However, the filter is very dark, and you would lengthen your shutter speeds and possibly get blurring from camera motion if you kept the filter on all the time. The reason I bought one of these was to greatly cut down the amount of light when I was taking long-exposure pictures of a waterfall, and then I was using a tripod. For routine protection of the lens, I use a "skylight" filter that does not lengthen exposures.JERRY F : I don't think so.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?SCOTT M : An ND filter is helpful when taking pictures of waterfalls, rivers and other moving water objects to increase the effect of movement.ALBERT C : PriceAna Sofia D : Need it to complete my set of ND filtersDAVID R : reliabilityDonald c : I intend to take more river, waterfall and sea pictures and the long exposure will lend a different experience.

Tiffen 77mm 4X Neutral Density Lens - Great Filter for Photos & Video

I take hundreds of pictures outdoors and use neutral density filters on snowy days and during sunny days on and around the water. If you shoot video, you definitely need a neutral density filter. This filter is good for video on days when it's not super bright out, and I use it quite a bit for wildlife videos on Youtube. For bright sunny days, you'll need a higher density filter.

Very acceptable Quality

the product is of very good quality, I thought it would introduce noise in my image, but the results are very good. there is no noise and only a yellow cast of color that is immediately corrected in post. Good quality

I have never bought a neutral density filter from this brand. I was a little worried at first. But the product that came was just as great as any of the other ones that I bought. Very happy with my purchase

The filter you need

Those filter helped me a lot filming in the daytime. I didn’t have overexposed footage which was the reason I bought in the first place, without it I had recorded footage that I barely saved. This filter took care of that with no problem.

Great filter

A must for landscape photography. I used this filter on my last trip to Glacier National Park and the result was exceptional. Set the camera on Aperture Priority and shoot away. Eliminate glare and let's all the colors in.

Good value. I used it on an extremely sunny day and produced a great image. It also had the benefit of providing around a 2 stop reduction in light giving more flexibility.

Great filter for a great price

I would recommend this filter. Works as expected and is great quality. Unbeatable for the price. Only 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very hard to remove from the lense.

You need one of these in your bag

If you're not sure why the above title is true, put this filter on your wish list and go find out; the web is filled with tutorials on how to use one. The things that an ND filter lets you do with your camera you simply cannot do any other way are, with a measure of creativity and patience, pretty amazing. One tip: get the Xume adapter/filter rings for whatever lens you think you will use this filter on most. It's nearly impossible to compose your shot with the filter in place, and the Xume system lets you easily place and remove the filter while you are setting up your shot. Tiffen makes some of the best filters on the market; yes, you can pay a lot more, but I would challenge anyone to prove that a ND four-stop filter does a better job than this one. Highly recommended.

Film Shooter

I use the ND filters when using color film.I load up with ISO 400 or 800 film instead of pushing or pulling the color film. Color film is touchy. I collect film cameras, 53 so far in all. Don't have enough ND filters to go around.

so far so good

I'm using the 3-stop 62mm ND filter for video and so far it works well. No noticeable color shifts or loss of sharpness. Only complaint is that there's no convenient case to carry it so I had to use one from a different filter.

Works as advertised

Works as expected. I use it on a Tamron 70-200 2.8 lens. I photograph motocross racing’. I like using a shutter speed of 200 to show the wheels turning. I can use a wide aperture to defocus the background with this with this ND filter.

Great filter

By noelskilz

Great solid filter - I use these for shooting weddings in the middle of the day in full sun. They work great to allow me to use a shallow depth of field and fill flash at full power to reduce shadows

Puts real colors back!!

By BRYAN E.

Puts the true colors back into each picture. Your pictures can look just as real as if you were looking in polarized sunglasses. After trying this filter, I bought one for all of my lenses.

These filters reduce the amount of light passing through the camera lens without changing the color of the scene. They are especially useful in bright light conditions to help prevent overexposure. Neutral Density filters also allow proper exposure at a wider lens opening for reduced depth-of-field to highlight a key subject by making the foreground and/or background out of focus.

Tiffen ND Filter Features

  • Eliminates overly bright, washed-out images
  • Balances exposure
  • Controls depth-of-field
  • Allows slower shutter speeds to produce blurred motion effects
