Q&A

Questions & Answers

Mr. P : Is it soft edge?GEORGE M : Yes, it is.FLETCHER S : Yes it is.GORDON H : Yes it is a soft transition. I very much like the filter. GordonNICHOLAS H : NoJERRY C : I wanted one that is easy to use and not cumbersome. I have not used it much but when I did it worked well and the edge was soft.
Shopper : Hi, can i attach a hoya hd cir-pl filter on it? (camera-lens-tiffen77mm-hoya77mm)?JEFFREY D : Yes, you can do that. However, if you stack filters like that, at very wide angles you will cut off the corners of your image. This is a big filter size, so I suspect you are using it on a wide angle lens, as I do. Using my 16-35 lens, the corners are going to be cut off at less than about 20 mm.DOUGLAS T : yesDAVID N : Yes no problem.BERNARD K : Its a good filter but not on the high end of quality. I now buy almost totally B & H filters from Germany =s top of the middle quality filters and they are great at a decent price. For a graduated filter I would prefer the square glass filters that slide up and down in a metal holder. A centered graduated filter does not have much diversity. As soon as I quit doing art shows I will be taking bracketed images of the same shot where there is a lot of contrast and use HDR.DENNIS F L : The filter has threads on both the camera lens side and the cap side. Any item with 77 mm threads can be screwed into the lens cap side. The person asking the question did not define "it" so the answer is only a guess.CAMILO B : Yes, you can stack filters on it. Just keep in mind that you may get vignetting, and since with the CPL you'll have two sets of rotating rings; it might be difficult to take them apart. Depending on your lighting conditions, checking the orientation of the graduated filter can become an issue. I generally leave it on top, just in case.
Hieu N : I am new to ND grad filter. If I buy this filter, do it come with filter hold? If the filter does not come with holder, which filter hold is the best for this Tiffen filter ?JIM M : I have this filter and it is the screw-on type. So, it screws directly onto the end of the lens...there is no separate holder.BERNARD K : You screw this and other circular filters onto the lens -- holders not needed. You can spend some money and get square graduated filters which slide up and down in a holder. Gives you better control than a circular screwed on the lens filter where the graduation is dead center. I'm personally switching to HDR EFEX PRO software. You bracket your picture 1 or 2 stops each way and the software will merge the contrasting pictures into one with more details in the shadows from the overexposed image and less white splash in bright parts of the image. You learn and control the software to get the image you want. I have some Tiffen filters but have switched to the mid-range priced German filters like B W. Better filter for more money.DAVID N : It is a screw on filter there is no filter holder needed. It screws onto the threads on the front of the lens so make sure to get a matching thread size or use a step up ring. I have all 77mm filters and use step up rings for all size lenses that are smaller. Good picture taking!!! Have fun!JEFFREY D : No holder needed! This filter screws on using the standard filter thread on your lens, so you size it and put it on like any other filter. The filter then rotates freely after it is on the lens, so you can position the gradient how you need to. Very easy!WALTER T : It doesn't need a holder -- it's a circular screw-in type, that let's the graduated piece rotate, similar to a standard polarizing filter. Thomas F : Filter screws on to 77mm lensTHOMAS C : Any filter that gives you the lens diameter, for example this Tiffin 77mm Digital HT ND filter, it means that the filter fits a 77mm lens. So, you do not need a filter holder. This filter will screw directly onto your lens. All you have to be sure of is that your len's diameter is actually 77mm.FRED G : This filter screws into your lens. You rotate it so that the horizon line is where you want it to be. No holder is required.JOHN T : No separate holder is needed with this filter. It screws on to the front of any 77mm lens, and has a separate rotating collar to allow you to position the graduated line parallel to the horizon. Unlike the square filters with a separate holder, this filter does not offer an up-down adjustment, which might be used to accomodate a high or low horizon line.

Good for sunrises and sunsets

I like this filter when shooting sunrises and sunsets as it helps me bring out colors more and shoot at lower shutter speeds. The coating is a little difficult to clean however

Ideal for seascapes

I live in the Chesapeake bay area. Bay photos are challenging due to bright skies dominating the exposure, resulting in underexposed land features. This filter solves the problem. The filter is not as versatile as an adjustable filter carrier system, it is a much more convenient and solid attacement--important, when shooting from a boat.

Great Filter

I shoot a lot of nature and landscape pictures and this is my my used filter in the bag. The graduated ND filter darkens my skies and reduces the amount of post processing in Lightroom.

HT graduated filter for landscapes

The Tiffen Digital HT color graduated filter is a coveted assessory for landscape work, especially with overly bright skies and background. This particular Tiffen component is excellent quality and construction.

Nice Glass

Now I can get the foreground and the background exposure correct w/o one or the other being blown out!

Disappointed

This filter goes too dark at the top and in the upper corners. If I had to do over again I would get one with a hard horizon line and a slide mount. The filter itself is well-made - I just want more control over the effect than I can get with this style.

Great filter. It's like a pair of sunglasses for your camera. It really cuts down on the light and brings out the details that were blown-out by sunlight.

My favorite filter

This is the filter I use more often. I think that if I had one of those square graduated NDs I would end up not using filters at all. This filter mounts like your conventional filters. And who cares really if you then have to crop your file a bit so that you get the horizon exactly where you want it. Digital SLRs now have more than enough resolution to crop. A clear winner.

Essential for the travel kit

I use ND grads a lot to balance sky. 67mm fits the Nikkor 24-85mm or 16-85mm and the 70-300mm VR. Booyah. The Tiften HD is quite nice. Even easy to see on the end of the lens with the "Ti" finish.

Essential for the travel kit

I use polarizers a lot to darken the blue in the sky, to take reflections out of water, or just to lose two stops when I need to get closer to flash sync or get water to smooth out and I'm not using a straight ND filter. 67mm fits the Nikkor 24-85mm or 16-85mm and the 70-300mm VR. Booyah. This Hoya is quite nice and good quality.

Excellent effect for Landscapes

This works very well balancing a bright sky with scenery in the foreground and without imparting any unnatural qualities to the scene. The quality is first-rate and it works as it should. I even used it on a lens whose front element turns when focusing - a minor thing to check its position as needed. A more in-depth description of the purpose of this filter and preference for this particular strength (ND 0.6) can be found elsewhere on line.

Tiffen graduated ND filter

I have used Lee filters, which I love, but the Tiffen is ideal for travel and you want to be able to compensate for contrasting light, quickly and without the need to set up a tripod.

Effective, affordable image manipulation

By Old F.

Very nice for in-camera image manipulation. Produces dramatic effects under the appropriate conditions. Important to remember you may not see the full effect until you download. If you tweak focus manually, be sure you don't move the filter as well. (A warning to all big-handed photogs!) A nice asset to my K10D kit.
