Questions & Answers

Shopper : WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POLORIZING FILTER AND A ND FILTER?BRIAN L : Polarizer filter cuts down on the glare and reflection of shiny objects - commonly used to "see' into lakes, rivers, office buildings, etc that have high glare and reflective qualities - otherwise you see/photograph only the shiny reflections. Also great for giving deeper blue skies and making natural landscape colors "pop" more. A ND filter actually reduces the amount of light allowed into the lens. Like sunglasses for your camera in essence. Great for using longer exposure times during the daylight hours. Commonly used for waterfalls, streams, ocean waves, etc. to get that dreamy flowing water look vs. stopping the action like a common snapshot does.MATT W : A polarizing filter helps reduce glare and darken washed-out skies. A ND filter simply lets less light into the camera. This allows for camera settings that you could not achieve on a bright day, such as open up you lens to reduce depth of field or slowing shutter speed to blur action. A polarizer can work as a ND filter as it reduces light into the camera. It doesn't work as well as it can have other effects besides reducing light.CHARLES L : A neutral density filter reduces all of the light hitting the sensor whereas a polarizer is used to filter out the polarized light coming from the sky. I use my circular polarizer filter to give the sky a deeper blue, make clouds appear brighter and reduce reflections. I use my neutral density filter to darken the scene evenly and use a slower shutter speed such as when I am photographing a waterfall. If I was going to purchase only one type, I would purchase a circular polarizer filter. I have both in my camera bag. Remember to remove your ND filter when you are done with it. I was on a photoshoot and used my ND filter. On the return trip I forgot to remove it. We stopped at a roadside produce market late at night. All of my evening photos were much darker than I wanted.SIMON T : ND filter is for reducing the light (evenly) while Polarizer filter is for eliminating reflection.SIMON T : ND filter is for reducing the light (evenly) while Polarizer filter is for eliminating reflection.KAREN S : A polarizing filter cuts reflections on things like glass and water and reduces haze. It also intensifies colors. A neutral density filter cuts the amount of light going through the lens. A polarizing filter is almost always useful during day time shooting. The ND filter on the other hand is specifically used when you want to use a wider aperture or a slower shutter speed and can't because of the amount of light. Let's say I want to shoot a waterfall and get the creamy effect from using a slow shutter speed. But the light is too strong and even stopped all the way up, I can only shoot 1/30 without overexposure. Putting an ND filter on the lens gives me extra stops to work with. If I use a 0.6, I gain two stops. Now I can slow the shutter speed to 1/10. ND filters can also be stacked for more stops.PATRICK P : A polarizer rotated to pass only light polarized in the direction perpendicular to the reflected light will absorb much of it. This absorption allows glare reflected from, for example, a body of water or a road to be much reduced. Reflections from shiny surfaces of vegetation are also reduced. Reflections from a window into a dark interior can be much reduced, allowing it to be seen through. (The same effects are available for vision by using polarizing sunglasses.) A neutral density filter or ND filter is a filter that reduces and/or modifies intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue of color rendition. The purpose of a neutral density filter is to allow you greater flexibility to change the aperture, exposure time and/or motion blur of subject in different situations and atmospheric conditions. Hope this helpsTOM E : An ND filter will reduce the total amount of light through the lens. I mostly use it to shoot long exposures in daylight such as waterfalls or streams. A polarizing filter will reduce the amount of reflected light such as on water surfaces or windows, allowing you to capture what's on the other side of the reflecting surface. It also makes skies bluer and clouds more dramatic.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?PHONG L : Good price.DENNIS H : Soften the light while not losing color. Great for bright daytime landscape pics.Alyssa E : For interviews on videoCHARLES L : Purchased for my full frame lens for photographing waterfalls and other scenarios where I need to step down the shutter speed.

Tiffen 77mm 4X Neutral Density Lens - Great Filter for Photos & Video

I take hundreds of pictures outdoors and use neutral density filters on snowy days and during sunny days on and around the water. If you shoot video, you definitely need a neutral density filter. This filter is good for video on days when it's not super bright out, and I use it quite a bit for wildlife videos on Youtube. For bright sunny days, you'll need a higher density filter.

The filter you need

Those filter helped me a lot filming in the daytime. I didn’t have overexposed footage which was the reason I bought in the first place, without it I had recorded footage that I barely saved. This filter took care of that with no problem.

I would recommend this filter. Works as expected and is great quality. Unbeatable for the price. Only 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very hard to remove from the lense.

You need one of these in your bag

If you're not sure why the above title is true, put this filter on your wish list and go find out; the web is filled with tutorials on how to use one. The things that an ND filter lets you do with your camera you simply cannot do any other way are, with a measure of creativity and patience, pretty amazing. One tip: get the Xume adapter/filter rings for whatever lens you think you will use this filter on most. It's nearly impossible to compose your shot with the filter in place, and the Xume system lets you easily place and remove the filter while you are setting up your shot. Tiffen makes some of the best filters on the market; yes, you can pay a lot more, but I would challenge anyone to prove that a ND four-stop filter does a better job than this one. Highly recommended.

Film Shooter

I use the ND filters when using color film.I load up with ISO 400 or 800 film instead of pushing or pulling the color film. Color film is touchy. I collect film cameras, 53 so far in all. Don't have enough ND filters to go around.

so far so good

I'm using the 3-stop 62mm ND filter for video and so far it works well. No noticeable color shifts or loss of sharpness. Only complaint is that there's no convenient case to carry it so I had to use one from a different filter.

Works as advertised

Works as expected. I use it on a Tamron 70-200 2.8 lens. I photograph motocross racing’. I like using a shutter speed of 200 to show the wheels turning. I can use a wide aperture to defocus the background with this with this ND filter.

Great filter

By noelskilz

Great solid filter - I use these for shooting weddings in the middle of the day in full sun. They work great to allow me to use a shallow depth of field and fill flash at full power to reduce shadows

Puts real colors back!!

By BRYAN E.

Puts the true colors back into each picture. Your pictures can look just as real as if you were looking in polarized sunglasses. After trying this filter, I bought one for all of my lenses.

Become a master of light control with the 77mm 4x (0.6) Neutral Density Glass Filter. This high-quality filter is designed to expertly reduce the amount of light entering your camera lens, without altering the color balance of your scene. It's an essential tool for photographers seeking to prevent overexposure in bright light conditions.

The 77mm 4x (0.6) Neutral Density Glass Filter is not just about light reduction. It also offers you the ability to achieve proper exposure at a wider lens opening. This feature is particularly useful for photographers aiming to highlight a key subject by creating a reduced depth-of-field effect. This effect makes the foreground and/or background out of focus, drawing attention to your subject.

Constructed with durability in mind, this filter is reliable and versatile, making it a valuable addition to your photography equipment. Whether you're shooting a sun-drenched wedding or capturing the beauty of a waterfall on a sunny day, this filter delivers consistent performance.

Despite its robust build quality, some users have noted that it may take a little practice to screw it onto certain lenses. However, once in place, the 77mm 4x (0.6) Neutral Density Glass Filter performs exactly as a neutral density filter should, providing you with greater control over exposure and depth of field.

In summary, the 77mm 4x (0.6) Neutral Density Glass Filter is a must-have tool for photographers who want to take their craft to the next level. It's an investment in quality, versatility, and effective light management.
