Questions & Answers

Shopper : Want to use this ND filter on Canon 16-35 2.8 WITH UV. Will this filter work without vinetting or is there a need for a step ring? Will this ND filter work for scenic pictures where the sky is blown out?MICHAEL L : I use this ND filter all the time with my protective UV. No need for a step ring.MIKE D : 16mm is wide and with a UV filter on it already, you may want to take the UV filter off before putting on the split ND. Scenic pictures where the sky is blown out is exactly what it was designed for. It reduces the brightness of the sky. That is exactly how I use it.KEVIN S : If I understand correctly, you're using the ND on top of a UV...in which case u'll get the slightest vignette...which will go away at roughly 17-18mm and isn't a big deal really. By itself, there's no vignetting. To answer your second question...I'd go with a .9 for general use. The only time the .6 is enough is right before/after sunrise/sunset. with a bright sky though, it's rarely enough. Maybe if it were a hard grad but as a soft...ive found it hardly makes a difference. Hope that helps!

I don't know why I didn't purchase this sooner! Popped this bad boy on my canon 50mm lens and helps so much outdoors if you want to achieve that cinema look. These are a must have for any photographer or cinematographer without built in ND filters.

I love this filter so far! I’ve only been able to use it once but it did what it was supposed to do.

High quality filter priced right. My experience with Tiffen filters has, without exception, been first-rate. Can’t go wrong with Tiffen filters!

Works as advertised.

I haven't used the filter much yet, but it does do what I wanted. I have only one nit to pick -- there is no obvious marking for the center /top of the darker part of the filter. It would be useful if there were such that could be seen even when the lens hood is on.

Tiffen 52mm Color Graduated ND .6

Great add on lens if you take a lot of outdoors landscape photos, adds great color for situations where top half or bottom half of scene is washed out.

Grading is somewhat abrupt, but good value for price

I find the grading to be a bit abrupt (hence visible in my captures) but it's not bad for the price. I'm happy for now and will look for something better when my photos warrant it :)

Great filter

One problem is the filter is actually two parts. One ring attaches to the camera and the other rotates to allow the gradient feature to rotate to cover the area for darkening. The attachment part has a griping part but it is level with the rotating ring. Would be nice if it was slightly larger for better griping

simple way to improve sunset pictures

I love this - it is a simple and inexpensive graduated filter that screws right onto the lens. It rotates smoothly. Even though it didn't look that way, the gradation is really subtle - no obvious line. Watch your metering or bracket though. I didn't notice any off-coloring, but I've only used it for sunset shots. I would like one that is even darker.

Does just what it's supposed to!

I used the Tiffen ND grad to shoot a sunset, rotating the dark side to the sky. It brought out the colors of the sky beautifully. I'm not a filter expert but it looks more like a split ND than a graduated, hence the reason for 4 stars. I thought it should have a more gradual change. Otherwise, I'm happy with the filter's performance.

I like it!

I haven't had a chance to use it in a real photo shoot yet, but I have experimented with it and it works well. Can't wait to try it on a nice sunset or sunrise. Price was good and Adorama service and delivery was excellent as usual.

Tiffen 77mm Color Graduated ND .6 Filter

I use this to help darken skys for better dynamic range. The only problem with it is your horizon is pretty much fixed becuase there is no adjustment on the filter unlike a Cokin system which I find much better.

Exactly what I needed

exactly what I was looking for to tone down the sky to even the exposure for twilight time exposures... have used it successfully in combination with other ND filters. constructive suggestion - mark the filter on the ring to idendify the horizon - this filter is not always in front.

Harsh graduation

Bought this filter to take on a recent trip to the Grand Canyon. The filter has too harsh of and end point for my purposes. In my opinion this would be much better suited for images with specific horizons that are only in the middle of the frame.

Tiffen 72mm Color Graduated ND .6 (4x) F

Shooting in Montana. Landscapes, mountains and dramatic cloud formations, few places on earth can match. Use item, -HDR, color and B&W. etc. Have used to emphase top, bottom, or angles on sides and corners----enhancements not possible with polarizer alone; Usually use tem alone, but have experimented in combination with polarizer---that two can serve some purposes, but most often use gradient filter alone. Over 60yrs experience, this Tiffin is first experience w/ gradient filters. It's become vital. Nikon D90, LightRoom, Photoshop, NIK software.

You really need this product, period.

To add depth to your landscape shot and not have the sky blown out or the forground loose shadow detail a graduated filter is a must.

Great Quality

Tiffen filters may be on the inexpensive side, but they are built very well. I have found this and all other Tiffen filters that I've purchased to be as good as the most expensive filters I have in my bag (B+W MC, Hoya MC). Although this is not a multicoated filter, I haven't run into any problems at all and flare doesn't seem to be any more of an issue with this filter than it is with my multicoated filters. This filter has a very gradual shift in tint, and this makes it especially easy to use compared with some of the harder-edged grad filters. Buy this and any other Tiffen filter with confidence and enjoy!

Graduated ND

Yes, you can do a lot in photoshop, you always do. However, when you get it right, when you take the shot, the results are always better. ND-Grads are a must. Below a #6, not worth it. Now you can expose/focus on the subject highlights without blowing out the sky..... Also, tip, most wide angle zooms will "vinette" with multiple filters (UV+ND)get a larger ND with step ring....no need to constantly remove UV
