This is my second D&S Ranger, so I guess I didn't have any issues with the first. Maximum height is about 65.75 inches. With center collum down about 55.25 inches. It's plastic on plastic with grease, so don't be fooled by that fluid drive jargon. But it's a good stable tripod for the money. I use it to hold lightweight binoculars for astronomy.

I bought this here in January and used it for shooting Still Pictures. In June I got a camcorder and began the tripod for video. That is when I noticed the (so called) "fluid head" was sticking and jerking when I panned slowly. It made the video jerk VERY badly. [...] Just don't plan to use it for video!

Fantastic tripod at a great price. It does feel a little plasticky, but that's kind of to be expected at this price point. Let me stress that this doesn't mean it's poorly constructed! So far I've used it for a variety of indoor and outdoor shots with no issues whatsoever.
