Questions & Answers

Ivan P : Which is the diameter of the glass?MICHAEL K : The diameter of the glass is just over one inch.Allen B : Approximately 28mm in diameterJOHN D : 1 - 1 1/2"NORRIS H : The glass alone - without the mounting ring - measures right about 1.25 inches in diameter.
Jose U : Are 1.25" filters compatible with a 2" Diagonal/Eyepieces?Allen B : The viewing filter is held to the eye to view the scene to get a better idea of the tonal range of the scene in monochrome. It is not used in conjunction with your cameraJOSHUA Z : Hey Jose, Could you give me some more clarification on what exactly you mean by a diagonal eyepiece? I don't use eyepieces; I looked up what exactly it was and I can't envision how one would use an eyepiece with this viewing filter. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. As for the filter itself, after reading Ansel's Book 2 I believe it was, where he recommends using one of these filters, I decided to buy it. I must admit that I don't use it terribly often...I would say the viewing filter is a useful tool mostly because it allows you to make judgements about how much a particular sky at a relative angle to the sunlight will be of the same value as your foreground, thus giving you a better idea about what sort of contrast filtration you will use on the actual shot. All in all, if you're a black and white enthusiast I would recommend purchasing this.BILL E : Don't know: don't understand the question.BRIAN L : Sorry....I have never thought to use it that way.....sounds like a good idea. It does work well to pre visualize a scene in black and white though.JOHN D : I have no idea. Suggest you contact Tiffin directlyJOHN L : I am sorry, but I do not know the answer. I use this strictly as a hand held viewer to assess the appearance of a color landscape if it were shot in black and white.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?AVALON L : Tiffen Seems to be the only company still manufacturing a product like this.STEPHEN M : Value studies for painting.EDWARD K : Lost onekristjana G : not just for black and white, assists greatly in contrast viewingJEFFERSON N : To learn values betterRobert C : Friend recommendationHECTOR Z : I want to check if is helping me with the B&W images I want to takeDAVID P : To help me make better decisions in settings when shooting black and white film and save film in the process!!!Allen L : It was recommended.EDWIN K : To assist in visualizing a scene in b&wM. D : Best priceROGER B : I want to do some black and white photography with my DSLR camera. I will shoot in color - but before I take the photo I want to know what it will look like in black and white. Contrast and tonal value.

Consolidates lights and darks very well. Is small and easy to carry around or hang on a hook on my easel. Love it.

Helpful tool

It does not show black and white. Instead it gives you a sepia colored filter that lets some color show through. Even so, I think it is still helpful for viewing tones.

Preview your shot in monochrome

This filter is now part of my everyday carry for landscape and other photography. The notion is to filter out color so that you can predict what your shot will look like as a monochrome image. This one gives a sepia-like look, but the tonal range helps you see it as it will be shot in B&W.

Tiffen BW Viewing Filter

Very disappointed with filter. It is only a glass neutral density filter and does not "automatically" convert colors to B/W. Tiffen should've used a Wratten #90 filetr instead. -KS

An old tool that works today

This tool is well known to photographers that choose b and w as their medium. Gives a good indication of what will confront you during conversion. The tool is well constructed and comes with a lanyard for handiness in the field.

"Seeing" is Believing in Black & White

I LOVE Black & White Images and I "grew up" Photographically, shooting and developing my own Black and White Film. I also believe that even in todays digital age that a Memorable Monochromatic Image must be seen in that medium BEFORE it hits Photoshop. I bought this for use in teaching a Local Photo Club/Workshop because it is difficult for Beginning Photographers to actually "see" in Black and White. It has proven VERY helpful and I wish I had considered it sooner.

Right Producut, Right Time, Right Price

My past work has been predominantly color. Moving to B & W requires a different visualization process for which the #90 filter is most helpful. Few products exist that are as well designed and easily employed as this unit. Wish I could have a pair of glasses to do this job, but the brief use period to avoid 'brain compensation' back to real color would make this impractical. The right item at the right time at the right prices, what more could you ask for. Thanks

Two thumbs up!

Very well made, pocket size, mine came with a small pouch - excellent for visualizing a scene in B&W. The device is an eyepiece like monocular that is deep orange in color. It works by removing all the color from a scene so that you can see just the contrast. It is very useful in 'learning' to see in black and white.
