Under the new era of digital motion picture cameras and imaging devices, cinematographers are faced with the challenge of working with a "one size fits all" device, replacing the flexibility of selecting specific film types. This shift has made the use of filters, such as the 4 x 4" Water White Glass IRND 3.0 10-Stop Filter, crucial in achieving the desired results.
These devices, designed for sensitivity in low light conditions, can easily be overexposed in brighter situations. The Neutral Density (ND) filter comes into play here, controlling light and offering more control over depth of field. Traditional ND filters, made with dyes, have done this job but have also allowed small amounts of far red to near infra-red light to pass through, affecting the image quality and color.
Digital imaging devices are sensitive to infra-red (IR), which can negatively impact the quality and color rendition of images, leading to unwanted color shifts and potential focus issues. To address this, some camera manufacturers, including Sony F and EX Series, ARRI Alexa, and Panavision Genesis, use an IR-blocking filter. However, combining a neutral density filter with cameras containing a built-in IR blocking filter can result in a spike in the far red and near infra-red.
Tiffen, a pioneer in the field, has designed the Full Spectrum IR ND Filters to provide a true neutral density into the IR spectrum, correcting this issue. These filters extend the light transmission characteristics into the infrared region of the spectrum, essential for cinematographers using high-definition cameras to control far red and near infra-red, especially when using heavier densities.
The Tiffen Full Spectrum IR ND filters, compatible with the Tiffen Clear Hot Mirror, are essential for Digital Motion Picture Cameras using a CMOS chip sensor without an internal IR Blocking filter, like the RED ONE and SI2K. They effectively combat near and far IR pollution across the range.
Manufactured using Tiffen's proprietary lamination process, these filters capture each effect between two pieces of glass, ensuring perfect parallelism. This means worry-free handling for the cinematographer. Made with Water White glass, these filters are available in sizes 4x4, 4x5.650, 5.65x5.65, 6.6x6.6, 95C, 41/2, 138mm, 105C, 72, 77, 82mm wide angle and Series 9, offering a comprehensive range to suit various needs.
