What sets the 5.65 x 5.65" White Water Glass Full Spectrum IRND 1.5 (5-Stop) Filter apart is its ability to provide a true neutral density into the infrared (IR) spectrum, a feature that is crucial in the era of digital motion picture cameras. As digital imaging devices replace traditional film, cinematographers are faced with a "one size fits all" imaging device that can be easily overexposed in bright conditions. This necessitates the use of high-quality filters to control light and depth of field.
The Neutral Density filter, such as the Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND 1.5, plays a pivotal role in achieving the desired results. Traditional ND filters, made with dyes, have been known to pass small amounts of far red to near infra-red light, which can affect image quality and color. This is where the Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND Filters come into play, designed to correct this issue by extending the light transmission characteristics into the infrared region of the spectrum.
Digital imaging devices are sensitive to infra-red (IR), which can steal contrast and color, resulting in unwanted color shifts. Infrared also has a different focal length than visible light, which can make your images appear out of focus. The Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND Filters combat this problem by maintaining color balance even when using heavier grades of Neutral Density filters.
These filters are particularly essential for cinematographers using cameras like the Sony F and EX Series, ARRI Alexa, or Panavision Genesis, which are known to control far red and near infra-red. The Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND Filters can also be used in conjunction with the Tiffen Clear Hot Mirror for Digital Motion Picture Cameras using a CMOS chip sensor, which does not use an internal IR Blocking filter, such as the RED ONE and SI2K.
Manufactured using Tiffen's proprietary lamination process, these filters capture each effect between two pieces of glass, ensuring perfect parallelism. This results in worry-free handling for the cinematographer. Made with Water White glass, the Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND Filters are available in a variety of sizes, including 4x4, 4x5.650, 5.65x5.65, 6.6x6.6, 95C, 41/2, 138mm, 105C, 72, 77, 82mm wide angle, and Series 9.
