Where digital motion picture cameras have largely replaced traditional film, cinematographers are tasked with adapting to a "one size fits all" digital imaging device. This shift necessitates the use of high-quality filters to achieve the desired cinematic results, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. The 5 x 5" Water White Glass Full Spectrum IRND 1.8 (6-Stop) Filter is a crucial tool for directors of photography (DOPs) who need to manage light exposure and maintain depth of field with precision.
Crafted to address the common issue of IR pollution, which can degrade image quality and color fidelity, this filter is designed to provide a true neutral density that extends into the infrared spectrum. Traditional ND filters, often made with dyes, inadequately attenuate the far red to near-infrared light, leading to color shifts where greens may appear muddy and blacks can take on a magenta hue. Moreover, infrared light has a different focal length than visible light, potentially causing images to appear out of focus.
The Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND Filters are engineered to correct these problems by offering a balanced light transmission that includes the infrared region. This is especially beneficial for cameras like the Sony F and EX Series, ARRI Alexa, and Panavision Genesis, which use built-in IR blocking filters and are prone to color spikes when combined with standard ND filters.
For cinematographers using cameras such as the RED ONE and SI2K, which lack an internal IR blocking filter, the Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND Filters can be paired with the Tiffen Clear Hot Mirror to fully combat near and far IR pollution. Additionally, these filters are available in combination with the Tiffen Hot Mirror, making them convenient for use in sunshades or smaller matte boxes.
The range of densities available includes ND.3, ND.6, ND.9, ND1.2, ND1.5, ND1.8, and ND2.1, ensuring that there is a filter to meet the needs of various shooting scenarios. Each filter is produced using Tiffen's proprietary lamination process, encapsulating the effect between two pieces of glass. This method allows for both surfaces to be ground and polished to perfect parallelism, ensuring the highest quality and ease of handling for the user.
Made with premium Water White glass, the 5 x 5" Full Spectrum IRND 1.8 (6-Stop) Filter offers exceptional clarity and is part of a comprehensive lineup that includes a variety of sizes to accommodate different camera systems and lens diameters. Whether shooting a high-definition feature film or a commercial project, this filter is an indispensable asset for achieving consistent, professional-grade imagery in digital cinematography.
