Review Summary

I watched and read quite a number of reviews of this Tamron lens before I decided to buy it. I have to agree with the consensus of opinion of all the reviewers. The 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is an excellent lens. I am completely satisfied with how this lens performs.

Excellent lens for Fuji x mount. I just wish it had an aperture ring. I have used it for about a week and have no complaints about image quality. I prefer it over the Fuji 16-55 f2.8 because it is lighter and cheaper. A heavy lens sort of defeats the purpose of the x mount, which is to be light and inconspicuous.

Very sharp. Superior to the xf18-55. Tested the weather sealing and found it held up well during a downpour hiking through the redwoods. No moisture intrusion. While in the redwoods the stabilization helped greatly in low light. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

Fast and sharp lens, build quality is good but it?s all plastic, nice weather sealing. Image quality is sharp and notice a bit more contrast. Overall a good run and gun lens for a apc sensor.

I love the range this lens has. It's versatile and opening more possibilities for me. I would have given it 5 stars if it didn't make any noises (caused by the aperture blades(?)) while above F5.6.

Amazing lens! I am using it in a Sony VG30 and the autofocus works great. The 2.8 aperture does wonders to prevent lots of noise in low light situations. The original purchase was faulty but Adorama fixed it right away! Adorama is the best!!

Ive been using three prime lenses with my a6400 for as long as Ive had it. While I love those lenses, it is kind of a pain to have to swap lenses or carry a second body around when I'm just out shooting. This lens covers all that ground and then some, and maintains the 2.8 aperture. It's super light and I'm very happy with the sharpness in the images I've made so far. Really looking forward to playing with it more and more.

I have been using the Tamron 17-28 and 28-75mm lenses on my Sony A7SIII and A7IV, and can say that the new 17-70 mm lens for Fujifilm as been fantastic. Use the lens with the X-H2S and the combo is nothing but magic. The new improved autofocus system of the X-H2S works great and reliable.

Pretty sharp corner to corner. I would say this rates about the same as Fujifilm?s 16 to 80 when stuff down to a four. Definitely a winner of a lens. And there is definitely warping but it is fixed in camera with the lens profile and is not noticeable after the fact. My only change would be a more robust weatherproofing. I have been using this Lens daily for around two weeks and will keep using it for professional work.

I purchased this lens as a possible replacement for my Fujifilm 16-55mm f2.8. I really love the Fujifilm lens, but I thought, given the Tamron's slight weight difference and the addition of stabilization could make it a worthy replacement for the Fujifilm. I compared the two lenses using two X-T3 cameras side by side to easily and instantly make a handling comparison. Surprisingly there was only a marginal difference. The extra weight and diameter of the Fuji was offset by the length of the Tamron so hold each one with one hand at shoulder height, was virtually the same. As far as the other physical characteristics, the Fujifilm build quality, aperture ring and overall since of confidence made it a pretty clear winner. The Tamron is totally fine but just not a the same quality level and things like the visible casting seams and the constant slight buzz/hum of the electronics just didn't give the same measure of confidence. As far as image quality, to summarize, the Fujifilm has very slightly better contrast and rendering, while the sharpness of the two lenses was not identical at equivalent focal lengths and apertures, but they both do a very good job of capturing beautiful images. Since I already own and am quite happy with the tried and true 16-55, the conclusion for me was to keep that lens and return the Tamron. That being said, given my experience with the two lenses, if I didn't have either and intended to purchase one or the other new, the considerably cheaper Tamron would be very tempting.

Excellent lens for traveling, constant wide aperture throughout all the zoom focal lengths for videographers and also photographers. The F2.8 is very useful for limited light environments.

Simply awesome lens. It pairs very nicely to my Sony A6600 and produces some fantastic results. The constant F2.8 aperture is perfect and allows for me to use creative bokeh throughout the zoom range of 17-70mm. The quality of this lens is awesome and feels so solid. I have the Sigma trio lens for this camera and I have to say that I?ll be using this lens most of the time. Adorama thank you for shipping e a perfect product.

It was a great lens, just has some unpleasant bokeh in my opinion and is a tad tricky to correct distortion in Lightroom.

The photos quality of this lens is amazing. The lens is super clear and gives me a great all around zoom range so I can use this lens as a go to for traveling. It feels great too. I really like the matte finish. The only thing is it does add some weight to my Sony a6000.

The lens is amazing! I took it to Disney world and the change in in the quality of photos that I was able to take was night and day. It's so clear, gives me a great zoom range and the bokeh is perfect.

Have been using this lens for a few months now. It's been fantastic. Took the place of a few primes! The minimum focus distance plus wide range & f2.8 aperture make it my daily work horse. Lightweight but doesn't "feel" cheap. Took it to the Aquarium of the Pacific into the aviary with misters running on a hot day. No moisture/ humidity issues.

It is a very sharp lens. Center of images are sharp in all focal lengths with the aperture wide open. Corner images are sharp as well except between 50-70mm. It just needs to step down to F4 to get perfect images. On the other hand the VC is weak unfortunately on my a6500 which has ibis. Slightly or even no better than a non VC lens for still images. I didn?t try video though. I?ve tested two lenses. The other one seems a little better in VC but IQ is much softer at wide end. So I decided to keep the sharp one with weak VC. It is much better than my Sony Zeiss 16-70mm F4 even though the Sony?s OSS seems better than Tamron?s VC for this specific lens. All in all I like this lens.

The closest I have come to one lens for most. I took this lens on a recent trip abroad. It performed amazing. The images were crisp and bright. The F2.8 produced an amazing Bokeh (I did not even need to use my prime lens), and worked great in low light. I can now travel with this lens and my 56MM 1.4 and have everything I need for my style of photography. Only downside is the size and weight. For street photography it is a bit cumbersome and noticeable, especially on a a6600, but is well worth it for the flexibility it gives me.

New go to lens, stays on my a6400 body most of the time and replaced the 18-135 mm OSS kit lens I had. Good weight. Great for portraits, super sharp. No much to dislike.

This is the second copy of this lens I have bought. Both came with a fair amount of dust in stuck to the inside of the front element. It does not show up in images of course, but in a new sealed lens I would have liked for that to not be the case. It takes beautiful pictures though, the lens is a beast. I'll take it, dust or no dust. I can carry this and the 70-350 and I'm set.

I haven't tested it out as much as I would like, but I am loving the lens so far. Great zoom range and amazing aperture throughout all the focal lengths. It's the widest aperture lens I currently own and I have realized what I have been missing out on. Picture with it look very crisp. Of course more expensive lenses will perform better but this lens has very good specs for how much it costs. It's arguably a little large, however that is not a concern of mine as it has a very reasonable weight.

I watched and read quite a number of reviews of this Tamron lens before I decided to buy it. I have to agree with the consensus of opinion of all the reviewers. The 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is an excellent lens. I am completely satisfied with how this lens performs.
This versatile zoom lens lets you enjoy shooting in a multitude of genres, from wide-angle scenes to telephoto moments. With a focal length range of 17mm to 70mm (a full-frame equivalent of 25.5-105mm), this is the world's first large aperture F2.8 standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras to achieve a 4.1x zoom ratio. It’s ideal for a variety of scenarios, from portraits and street snapshots, to landscapes and even close-ups.
The 17-70mm F2.8 maintains its large F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range (unlike variable aperture lenses that darken as you zoom). Thanks to F2.8 and high optical performance, 17-70mm F2.8 allows you to capture your subjects with clear details from wide angle to telephoto. The three main advantages of a large F2.8 aperture are: A) ability to shoot successfully in lower light levels, B) beautiful and dreamy bokeh, and C) better control of depth-of-field which is particularly useful when intentionally limiting depth-of-field to improve portraits by blurring the area behind the main subject. Structurally, the optical formula includes 16 elements in 12 groups. It was created in pursuit of superior optical performance, utilizing an effective allocation of two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements and one aspherical hybrid lens element. The optical design ensures high resolution and high contrast not just in the center of the frame but also in corners and at the edges.
The 17-70mm F2.8 utilizes Tamron's highly regarded, proprietary VC image stabilization system to maximize the inherent optical performance of the lens. It reduces the degradation of picture quality caused by minute camera shake that is likely to occur during handheld shooting at slow shutter speeds under low-light conditions indoors or at dusk. When shooting video, by leveraging AI technology, image stabilization performance improves compared to conventional models.
This advanced lens focuses extremely close for a standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The MOD (Minimum Object Distance) is just 0.19m (7.5 in) at the wide-angle end and 0.39m (15.4 in) at the telephoto end. When shooting very close to the subject, the lens enables expressive imagery with highly blurred backgrounds, a feature unique to large-aperture lenses. This allows you to create one-of-a-kind photo of a variety of subjects, from snapshots to portraits, landscapes and even architectural photography. Close-up shots of scenery taken at the 17mm end maximize the unique perspective only true wide-angle lenses can deliver.
This lens was created through the uncompromising pursuit of portability optimized for use with APS-C Sony E-mount cameras. Even with the inclusion of high-performance VC, the 17-70mm F2.8 is extremely light weight and compact, with an overall length of just 119.3mm (4.7 in), maximum diameter of 74.6mm, and weight of 525g (18.5 oz). It is a very versatile lens for travel, where small bags are preferred, and is a great portable lens for daily use.
The AF drive on the 17-70mm F2.8 includes an RXD motor unit to help you stay focused on the action. RXD uses an actuator to precisely control the rotational angle of the motor, allowing it to directly drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear. A sensor that precisely detects the position of the lens enables high-speed and accurate AF, which is ideal when shooting continually moving subjects or recording video. And with a focusing system that is both smooth and quiet, the 17-70mm F2.8 lets you shoot free from stress not worrying the drive sound in a quiet environment.
