I got this for Christmas. Have used it about 3 weeks. Have taken pictures outside in the snow, at the New England Aquarium, at a Monster Truck show. This lens has responded well to action and still shots. In bright lights and dim lights. I use the built in flash on all my pictures. And, YES it does all the auto focus for the D40 camera. I see many years of use in this lens.

Useful all around, well built, everyday lens. Drawbacks: the lens creep (I lock it whenever not in use)I wish the lens would lock while shooting object, especially in vertical but does not?? This would be an advantage to this lens. The extended lens verses self contained is a nuisence. Does provide good selection of semi wide angle (nice finished quality except for edges) and mechanism/zoom is smooth and clear results, but seems to vignette on edges more than other lenses. Post cropping and photoshop are necessary! Lacks crispness when used with external flash. Good everyday shooter and convienent, but for professional quality with my D300, I wouldn't highly recommend. Good lens for starter however. I would not pay full price for this lens, but if found otherwise, consider buying

I purchased this lens because I needed a walk around lens with both wide angle and telephoto capabilities. Canon doesn't really have one so I researched this Tamron lens. I'm very pleased with it as it's lightweight and I don't have to carry my heavy "L" lens if I don't want to. Images can very grainy as you get to the extreme wide angle and telephoto ranges.

I just bought this lense and took it out for a test drive. Variations on portraits (kids at the playground), macro flower shots and general outdoors. This lense has it all for the enthusiast (like me) who only wants to carry one lense. Focus is a little slow and there is some distortion at the longer focal lengths, but nothing that you will even notice unless you are really looking to find it. Bottom line...great lense and a super value.

Let me start by saying that I love this lens... I enjoy that I can travel with this lens and have no need to carry any other. It is light weight and easy to use. So why only 4 stars? LENS CREEP! Mine will creep downward any time it faces down. I have a habit of holding the lens as I shoot, so I have gotten use to it and I don't notice it anymore. I have gotten into the habit of locking the lens via it's lock anytime I am not shooting so that the lens does not creep. Easy to VIGNETTE! I enjoy using filters (COKIN) and any time I add the adapter, I get lens vignetting. Not to big a deal if I shoot at a higher MM setting. Again, It just depends on how close you are to you subject. Easy to fix via using a higher MM setting or cropping in post production. If you add a dark vignette in something like PS anyway, it won't be an issue. Just be aware that this will happen.

I like this lens but I'm frustated by the lens slide. When not locked, the lens slides down. I sent it back twice to have the barrel tightened. It came back fixed (under 5 year warranty) without lens sliding but after some use, it starts doing it again. It frustrates me if I try to take a close up looking straight down, e.g., flowers, because the lens slides down. The lens can be only be locked at the shortest zoom, i.e., 35mm. Other than that nuisance, I like the lens and it is pretty durable. I've used it on many vacations with impressive pictures.

The life of a digital photographer has never been better with this take-it-anywhere All-in-One lens, the ultimate high-power zoom for seamless shooting. *Like a 28-400mm lens in 35mm format.
