Q&A

Questions & Answers

HARRY N : Can I used with d5300?ANDREW R : Yes, this lens should work with the D5300
Shopper : Hi. Can i use the lense on a Nikon D40X?JOHN B : I do not know if it will fit. I have a D5000 and the lens works well.ROBERT F : I have a Nikon D-200 and have the Tamron 18-270mm, I find the lense a little slower adjusting to the idea focus then other Nikon lenses I own. I can live with the slower lense, it produces great pictures without the high purchase cost. I found the quality of the product excellent. I will purchase other Tamron products when the need arises.CAROLYN L : I'm not familiar with the D40X but I did buy that lens for my Nikon D40. It fits perfectly on my D90 and has become one of my favorite lenses-especially when I have to travel light!marc l : should be able to. i'm using mine on a nikon d5000; pros: very versatile lens from macro to strong telephoto; all you need for a day of photography. cons: heavy! max aperture is a little slow; auto-focus frequently won't work for me so i focus manually, which is not a big problem, good luck, markFRANK A : Do not know. I do not have a Nikon D-40JUDY W : I use my Tamron 18-270 on my Nikon D80 with no problems. I don't know about using it on a D40X.ROLF R : yes you can, the motor is in the lens and works with all Nikon DSLR camerasELIZABETH P : This lens is compatible with most modern Nikon DSLRs, including D40,D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D3000, D3100,D5000, D5100, D7000, D2X, D2Xs, D2H y D2Hs.ROBERT F : I believe the answer is YES. I am using it on my D-70 (which has the focusing motor in the body), and I AM ALSO USING IT on my D-60, which does not have a focusing motor in the body. It works on both. The D-60 and D-40 are similar in that they both use what are called HSM lenses (with the focusing motor in the lens). So I believe the answer is YES. I used to have a Nikon 18-200, and found it didn't have quite enough reach for some of the pictures I was taking (Galapagos Islands - birds flying, dolphins jumping, etc). So I bought the Tamron 18-270, Very happy with it.PHYLLIS A. T : Sorry, but I am not sure if this lens can be used on a Nikon D40X. I have used it on a D80, D90 and D200 with no problem.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?ROLF R : I bought it and sold it after a month because of the lens creeping. For bird photography I have to hold the lens up, for butterflies down and when the lens moves I was always out of focus. I bought a 70-200mm Nikon with a teleconverter instead because I had a 24-70mm already.marc l : Chose this because I hate changing lenses outside, especially in snow or bad weather; it has just incredible range and flexibility-- super zoom to good macro. But... and this is a big but... I am not really satisified with color and sharpness. I'd give it 3 stars. level:serious amateur

Great lens

I love this lens. I know there is a lot of negative comments about the lens creep and the stiffness of the lens when zooming in and out. I have had this lens almost a year now and it is never off my camera. I get great photos with it. Whether I am shooting wildlife or portraits, it works great. I never have my hand off the lens when I am zooming, so I don't get lens creep. Using this lens for almost a year, the stiffness has become smoother. I love this lens.

Great Walk-About Lens

For the excellent wide angle to telephoto zoom range, this lens produced good image quality. It shows some softness at the maximum zoom, but that is to be expected. For the price, this is a greate walk-about lens that I use all the time during my travels. It is also ideal for everyday home & family use. It is light and compact. Set it at F8 and it produces that are consistently vibrant and sharp. The VC works well too. As a user of the Nikkor 70-200 f2.8, I have some idea of the image quality from high end lenses. This lens is excellent value for the money.

A great choice

This is the first generation of this lens. It's done everything one would expect it to do. AND you can often leave your camera bag at home.

What a range! great lens.

A great overall lens. This paired with the Tamron 10-24 zoom covers just about everything. I use these 2 with my Nikon D7000 and love the quality the D7000 gives me.

Great Travel Lens!

This is a great lens for travel. Compact and light weight with excellent image quality at the middle range of appertures (around f/8) and slightly shy of the extreme zoom of 270mm. Images are a tad soft at 270mm, but hardly noticeable unless you are a pixel peeper (and I am one!). Zoom creep is a problem but engaging the zoom lock works. I use it as my wallk around lens on the D90 and it provides great range. I am very satisfied--it is good value for the money.

Good all Purpose Lens

For the price, this lens has great range. VC works well. I use this when travelling since it is fairly compact and light and is very versatile. For pixel peepers, the lens is a bit soft at 270mm and at the max and min apertures. However, for everyday use, I set it on f/8 and it produces consistently sharp images.

This is a great lens

I have used this lens for over a year and I think it is the best. I have other lens but keep this one on most of the time. I use the 270 end more because of wildlife photos. I would and have recommended it.

Almost perfect

Very good Travel zoom lens, with this one you dont need to carry and change lenses, for a walking around shots It will do it. Still I don't like that zoom ring jams in the middle of the range (around 70mm) it makes it feel cheap, comparing to sigma smooth ring. other than that it is one for me.

Great lens

This lens covers about 90% of my travel photos. It is fantastic as a travel lens when you want to go light. On a recent trip to Maui it did everything I needed from sunsets to close ups of flowers. It focuses quickly and accurately in good light. The only fault I have found with it is the slow/confused auto focus in poor light. It tends to hunt a lot. I found myself switching to manuel focus when the lighting got poor. The vibration control works great. i stopped several photos down to increase DOF and needed slow shutter speeds (1/30 or less) to compensate and there is no blur, even without using a tripod. The color reproduction is very good. For most photos there is no visible distortion until you get very wide and even then you really have to look to see it. I also own a Nikkor 18-200 and this lens compares very favorably with it. As long as you use this lens in decent light, it is a keeper.

Love this product

This lens fits wonderfully with my Nikon D90. Have taken approx. 500 pics in the last month. Very happy with the results. Lens is heavy and not good for low light but for my everyday lens it is great.

nice travel lens

I bought this lens to replace the two lens that came in my Nikon D5000 kit. It is great not to have to change lens out in the field. Although I do find this lens to be louder and a little more "tighter" when zooming in. All in all serves my purpose so feel it was a good buy and the rebate also was a reason that I bought it now.

to keep it or to send it back?

Somewhat sticky when shooting to horizon. But when shooting above horizon, increasing zoom is quite sticky. And when shooting below horizon almost physically unable to decrease zoom without moving camera to horizontal - extremely stiff. But 28-275 f3/5-6.3 Wow! Now I seldom have to change lenses. Such a big plus for me. So it is a hard decision whether to keep the lens and put up with the stickyness or carry two lenses to replace it.

Best All Around Lense on the Planet

I have had the lense for over a year now and can not stop telling every photo enthusiast I know how great the lense is. I find the 15x magnification a tremendous advantage for shooting landscapes and wildlife without changing lenses. I am also into HDR photography and the lense performs flawlessly when focusing between exposures. Best all around lense on the planet.

Decent lens; minor annoyances

Used lens first time in Hawaii recently. Good: - great pictures at full zoom; sharper then Nikon 18-200mm which also have - Has a lock to prevent lens creep - lightweight for the size Bad: - at times struggles to focus - it pops/clicks when focusing which is annoying. You notice it when looking through viewfinder and the frame 'twitches' sort of

Terrific super zoom lens, great value

This Tamron super-zoom lens is an incredible value, and it works well as an all-around lens. When traveling, and I'm not able to take my full kit, this is the lens I leave on my Nikon. With its wide 18mm - 270mm zoom range and macro capability, along with its built-in 3-axis vibration compensation, it's hard to find reasons not to like this lens. This doesn't mean that it's 100% perfect. Other reviews have already documented that this lens suffers from lens-creep, and that its zoom ring gets stiff in the 70mm - 100mm zoom range, and that's why I rated it four out of five stars. But both of these are out-weighed by the overall value, especially the consistently good image quality it produces and the aforementioned vibration compensation. These two points are where the lens really shines. This is a terrific lens to add to your kit. I would certainly recommend that friends consider this lens for their use.

This lens rocks!

I bought this lens as a "walk around" - and it is truly outstanding. There WAS a lens creep problem - which was easily resolved by a 78 cent O ring purchased at a hardware store. I just gave this lens a major workout in two national parks. The natural color was intensely preserved. Focusing was immediate, crisp and sharp. It is not too heavy. The optical stabilization is greatly improved over previous iterations of this type of lens. (I had owned a fine Sigma 18-200. This is a significant upgrade.) Additional pluses include value for the dollar (outstanding) and excellent flexibility. There may be some vignetting in wide angle or low settings - I just haven't seen it. I recommend this lens without reservation.

Outstanding lens, I love the flexibility

I photograph landscapes, flowers and wildlife and make photo note cards and photo prints for sale. I enjoy the fact that I don't have to keep changing from a wide angle lens to a telephoto lens. I missed many photos of wildlife because I had the wrong lens on the camera when the animal or bird suddenly appeared. With this lens I'm ready. The Vibration Compensation is great. It has produced sharp photos when fully extended to 270mm. I feel more confident that the photos will be sharp. As I take longer hikes it may prove to be heavier than I'm use to.

I would definitely buy this lens again!

Very good for travel. Helps to keep the dust out of the camera (D90 in my case). Of course the trade offs of smaller aperature and slightly "soft focus" at longer focal lengths might limit lower available light shots and lessen enlargement or cropping capability. BUT, these are tradeoffs against cost. The tradeoffs in my view make this a very attractive lens for the money.

Great value, solid performance.

This lens was a replacement for my 55-135mm kit lens. Turned out to be a great investment. The vibration control alone makes this lens worth the money. I have shot the some of the same events with this lens as I did with the old one and have yielded much better results. Shooting bracketed shots handheld (with a little practice) yields great results, too! The lens features solid and sturdy construction. On the downside: This lens is a little heavy, but not unbearable. Lens creep is a slight problem, however it is stiffer through 70-150. If pointing down while shooting, you'll need to keep a good hold of the lens. It can also be a little slow to focus during action or sports photography, although I admit this is partly due to my lack of skill in that area. Overall, this lens is a great value and a great investment. This lens is a great all-use shooter, from travel snapshots to composed studio-style shots. Invest in this lens and spend the money you save on practice and training to hone your skill as a photographer.
