I had my Canon XTi for over 2 years before breaking down and buying a new lens - the kit lens just doesn't do it. I chose this because from what I could tell the aspherical lens was really good - and I wanted a good zoom lens.Overall I really do like them. I'm not going to say it's top notch build quality, but I think it's better than Canon's kit lens. I don't use the zoom lens much - but it works well for zooming I just tend to take close up / portraits / wide shots more. The aspherical is what I really love. It is crisp, gets really really good colors, and looks nice. It makes anything taken with my kit lens look straight out of a point and shoot. At 70mm it produces a pretty nice bokeh effect. I think this is worth the money - especially for beginners or if you have a kid real interested in photography but you don't wanna spend 1 grand on a lens they might lose /drop / etc. I also am in college, so on a budget, this is a GREAT deal. It comes with lens hoods which I love.

This is a great lens combo for any slr hobyist from beginer to advanced. Both lenses are built well and take realy nice pictures. I have been unable to find a better deal for the price. The 70-300mm lens is great for someone starting out in macro photography.

AF28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical, A standard zoom lens from a wide 28mm to a medium telephoto range of 80mm. The use of aspherical elements in the front group reduces the number of elements required, and the use of strong engineering plastic in the barrel makes the body a light 237g. Consequently, it is easy to carry.
AF70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2, Tamron now offers a lightweight, compact, high-image-quality telephoto zoom lens with macro capability of 1:2 that can be used with digital cameras. This new lens is a Di type lens using an optical system with improved multi-coating designed to function with digital SLR cameras as well as film cameras.
With this 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens, flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm obtains a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at a minimum focus distance as short as 37.4", enabling close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other objects that normally require the use of a specially designed macro lens. Moreover, this is a zoom lens that casually offers the distant capture and foreshortening effect pleasures of the 300mm ultra-telephoto world.
