Questions & Answers

KT G : Will this lens work on a 5d Mark II?ROBERT K : yes, works as well as any Canon lens. Beautiful color rendition and very sharp. Highly recommendJames G : I don’t believe so. I’m pretty certain it is not usable in a full frame camera. I love the lens, but have a D7Mark II, which is a crop sensor camera.JOHN B : YesRalph S : Yes. Canon’s full frame line up of lenses (including the 5D series) are labeled “EF” mount.
Shopper : I'm looking for a fast video lens for 80D?teal g : This would be great, but if it's the Canon 80D remember that it's a crop frame camera and this will be more like a 60mm lens.KRISTEN C : I bought the Tamron 35mm for my 80d a while back. It worked well. The auto focusing speed wasn't nearly as fast as my Canon 50mm 1.8 and manual focus wasn't the quickest either. If your looking for speed it wasn't the fastest lens. However, the VC worked great for handheld video & photography. The lens attached to the 80d also made it very front heavy and not always the most comfortable to used on an all day shoot. But mounting the lens to a Canon 6d balances well. I mostly used the 35mm for photography. And when I did use it for video it worked for my needs. I mostly shot short handheld clips or I used it with a tripod. I hope this helps you out.PHILIP K : This is an amazing lens, but VERY big and heavy for the focal length. I honestly wouldn't recommend for video.
Abi B : will this work to crop sensors?James G : Yes, it will. I have a Canon D7 Mark II, which is a crop sensor. I use it a lot for street photography. As a matter of face, it is my go to lease for street photography because it is short, light weight, and lets in a lot of light being a 1.8 sense. I can recommend it whole heartedly.Nathan F : All full frame lenses will work on a crop sensor- yesPHILIP K : This would give you a roughly 52mm lens. You can get a far cheaper, smaller equivalent for crop sensors-- this is a huge lens. Not a great choice.

Typical Tamron lens.

Tamron does it again. I use this lens on my Nikon D750 for interiors and exteriors in architectural work. It is a perfect piece of equipment for eliminating distortion, and the build quality is always tops with Tamron. I chose the 1.8 for the I S features which is not on the 1.4 version. Auto focus was dead-on right out of the box, no fine tuning needed. This is my 3rd Tamron lens, ( 35mm 1.8, 85 mm 1.8, and 70 - 300 4.5 zoom). My only complaint is wishing Tamron had a 30 mm shift lens for architecture. I am not a brand guy until it comes to Tamron. Pony up with the shift lens Tamron!!

A quality lens for a reasonable price

I would definitely recommend this lens. It takes sharp and high quality photos. It has a sturdy construction while remaining light weight. For the price, it really can't be beat.

Nice all purpose lens

This lens is a great all around lens. Excellent price. Considered the canon 35 1.8 but couldn’t justify the price difference. Sharp and fast!

Stunning results and worth every penny

Absolutely stunning lens! I think I'm a Tamron convert. I shoot family photos, weddings and quinceañeras and lugging the 24-70 and 70-200 gets tiresome. I bought this 35mm to try out their primes and I'm loving it. Tack sharp, helpful VC and amazing image quality. I'll be buying the 85mm later this year

will not be disappointed with this lens!

This is my second Tamron lens and first prime Tamron. My copy turned out very good. Little or no distortion or aberration, very precise sharpness. I like the feel of the f-stop ring. Good build quality and should last a life time.I’ve got Zeiss, Canon, Fuji and Nikkor lens and this Tamron is in the same class as the premium glass primes.I’ve bought a lot of gear from B&H over the years and no complaints at all. I’m now trying some gear from Adorama and I highly recommend them as well.Buy your gear from reputable vendors and be assured you can exchange or get a refund if the performance of the product is not what you expected.Would have given this a 5 star, but I don’t rate a 5 star until I’ve used the lens for a year or two, get some large prints, and do a detailed comparison. You will not be disappointed with this lens!

Pleasant shooting experience!

The first event i did with this lens was nothing short of amazing. I was pleasantly surprised with how much brighter and sharper this lens was wide open, than my 2.8 lenses which made shooting at the dimly lit venues a breeze. The only thing that bothered me was that it focuses slightly slower than my canon lenses. No regrets, i was sold with the image quality alone!

Expected good... was blown away!

I read a lot of reviews that this lens was more than worth it, and I'm honestly still blown away. It's incredibly sharp, has surprisingly good color rendition, and the VC makes it incredibly versatile for both stills and video. Could not be happier!

At least equivalent to a Canon L series

This lens handles superbly and balances perfectly on my 5D MarkII. Exceptionally sharp, vibrant color. Today's field trip in the snow -- no CA, no flare, without having to use a polarizer. You can't go wrong with this one. I traded an older EF 50mm f1.4 and 24 mm f2.8 for this one and would do it again in a minute after seeing the performance of this Tamron. The Adorama trade-in system was fast and fair. Great job, folks.

A very versatile lens

I've had this lens for about 1.5 years. It is my most often used lens with my Nikon D750. The 35 mm focal length on a full frame camera gives me a wide enough field of view for landscape and general photography, but with a 1.8 maximum aperture I can still do portraits with a shallow depth of field. This lens is very sharp on my camera. Autofocus is accurate and required no microadjustment for me. Also the combination of f/1.8 and vibration reduction mean that I can often do handheld night shots without having to carry along a tripod. Another welcome bonus is the close focusing distance which works great for flower shots. The only downside I can think of is that it is not a particularly light lens - it is, for example, heavier than 24-85 zoom, but the image quality more than makes up for it. Overall, this is a very versatile lens and I recommend it.

Absolutely the best!

I have used this lens non-stop since purchasing it from Adorama a few weeks ago. It has become my go-to lens for portraiture of all times from weddings, family, engagements. This lens provide absolute quality in the build, the images, and all around performance. I highly recommend this lens for photogs who are in a tight budget and definitely at the same level as the Sigma art series.

Sharp and Beautiful

I wanted a 35mm for weddings, newborn sessions, etc. I debated between the 35mm Sigma Art 1.4 and the Tamron. The Sigma had great reviews too but I wanted image stabilization. I used the lens during a recent trip and received great reviews on all the photos. I also have the Tamron 90SP macro and love it. Tamron has really stepped up. Well done!

Good no bad at all !

It's an awesome lens! The reason I didn't give five stars was a focus issue, it tends to hunt in low light situations. I hope it is just my copy.

Great bang for the buck!

I had a Sigma 35mm Art a while back and after using this lens for a couple weeks now, I consider the Tamron very neatly just as good while being less $! The Sig does have slightly prettier bokeh and f1.4 but the Tammy offers vibration reduction and weather sealing. With that in mind, I would honestly say you get a bit more for the money with the Tamron.

Great lens

This is a great 35mm lens that is equal if not better than the Nikon 35mm 1.4 lens, which has a front focusing issue and even better than the Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens. Very good solid build that doesn't stand out as a third-party lens. I am happy with my purchase and it has served me well across three continents.

Very Sharp Even at Slower Speeds

I bought the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC about a month ago. I was considering this lens, the Nikon 35mm AF-S f/1.4 ED and the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 HSM A. DXOmark rated both the Sigma and the Tamron above the much more expensive Nikon lens, and also the Zeiss. I read reviews for months, and looked at the images others had taken with all the lenses. Although I was originally a Nikon lens purist, the results as well as the price could not compete, so I chose a third party lens over Nikon. I like the weight of the Tamron, and the solid feel. The manual focus is tight, you know it isn't going to wander. That is important to me because I shoot a lot of landscapes. I shot several test shots indoors, under a mixture of incandescent and fluorescent, WB set on "cloudy" on my D750, and the color and detail were excellent. Also, hand held shots at speeds under 1/50 were still very crisp. This is a definite improvement over my old Nikkor 35mm f/2 D lens, and I have taken some great shots with that tiny little lens. I would recommend this lens without any hesitation.

Redefining the SP Series Lenses Designed for the New Era of Imaging....
Even when used wide open at F/1.8 aperture, provides outstanding image quality with maximum aberration compensation, thanks to optimal use of sophisticated glass materials and highly advanced optical design:

SP 35mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F012) is a 10-element, 9-group construction, utilizing two molded glass aspherical elements, one LD (Low Dispersion) and one XLD (extra Low Dispersion) element. Two of the aspherical elements effectively correct the field curvature to ensure planarity of the image plane, while efficiently compensating for spherical and comatic aberrations to achieve superb uniformity across the field with high-fidelity point spread reproducibility. Outstanding resolution is rendered from corner to corner and the sagittal comatic flare (a type of aberration that a point image at corners induces a comet tail-like blur), which tends to become prominently noticeable in night scenes, is corrected. The LD and the higher grade XLD glass elements optimally compensate for chromatic aberrations, which tend to become particularly prominent in fast-aperture lenses in general, and deliver crystal clear images without any residual color fringe.

35mm focal length with fast F/1.8 maximum aperture and integral VC (Vibration Compensation) for full-frame DSLR cameras:
The desirable maximum aperture of F/1.8 was chosen as part of the very challenging design goals which included achieving superb optical performance, minimizing the closest shooting distance and integrating VC functionality while packaging those key attributes in a reasonably-sized barrel construction for better practical handling. Repeated performance simulations were conducted throughout the entire design phase to assure achieving the essential, fundamental property of a fast-aperture lens in full-frame format, namely the harmony between excellent resolving power and beautifully-tuned background blur (bokeh).

The VC feature has become virtually indispensable in the era of high-pixel-density cameras. Freedom in handheld shooting at dusk or in a dimly lit room is dramatically expanded by cancelling the camera shake that often occurs under such low light conditions due to slower shutter speeds. Minute vibrations that plague cameras with high pixel count can be well muted to make the most of the performance of the camera and lens outfit.

MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 7.9", the best-in-class close-focusing capability: *
MOD measures just 7.9", yielding a magnification ratio of 1:2.5, the shortest close focusing capability among fast-aperture fixed focal lenses in full-frame format. Since the lens allows for shooting at distances extremely close to the subject (similar to a macro), close-up pictures with spectacular background blur effect (bokeh) can be obtained with the aperture wide open, thereby expanding the scope of photo opportunities. Tamron's proprietary Floating System, which places a group of elements at the optimal location as the focusing group travels relative to shooting distances, ensures the best imaging performance at any range. From the closest to a normal shooting distance range, image quality is excellent.

Optimal relative illumination means no dark corners:
Some fast-aperture lenses "vignette" or have darkened corners due to uneven light distribution. However, even at the full open aperture, the overall illumination level across the entire field is well balanced and optimized. Because there is a sufficient amount of corner illumination, photographers can enjoy making full use of the wide open aperture.

eBAND Coating deployed to thoroughly suppress ghosting and flare:
eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings, both providing outstanding anti-reflection effect, are applied to critical element surfaces for maximum light transmission. Internal reflections from element surfaces which cause ghosting and flare are reduced to an absolute minimum. Flawless, crystal clear images can be obtained. eBAND Coating, a hybrid nano-structured layer with extremely low refractive index coupled with multi-layered anti-reflection coating technology, efficiently minimizes reflection of extremely angulated incident light-something that cannot be achieved by conventional anti-reflection coatings alone.

High-speed AF with USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive):
Fast, quiet AF is achieved by employing a USD ring-type ultrasonic motor which enables remarkably precise focusing drive with high torque and responsiveness. Because the rotational torque of the USD is generated by waves of ultrasonic vibrations, inherent operating noise is extremely low and practically imperceptible. In addition, Full-time Manual Focus override is available at any point during the autofocus operation for deliberately shifting focus without switching the AF-MF mode back and forth.

Fluorine coating on the front element repels water and fingerprints:
Fluorine coating technology, developed for use in industrial optics applications, has been adapted to photographic lenses. The water and oil repellant coating applied to the front element surface allows instant removal of dirt or smudges with ease. The coating also provides a reasonable level of durability, and will sustain its effectiveness for years.

Moisture-resistant construction for shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions:
Seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops and provide moisture-resistant construction. This feature provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

Circular aperture for enhanced bokeh:
The 9-blade diaphragm retains a nearly circular opening even when stopped down by two stops. Marvelously tuned blur in the subject background can be obtained without generating undesirable shapes of aperture patterns.

Compatibility with Adobe and Silkypix software Supplied with SILKYPIX Developer Studio 4.0, advanced editing software that features correction menus for various aberrations (lateral color, distortion, relative illumination) based on the optical design data of this specific lens. Shooting RAW image files enables creation of more stringent and high-fidelity image quality.

(* Rated top among current 35mm fixed focal length interchangeable AF lenses for full-frame DSLR cameras excluding macro lenses (as of July 2015; Tamron)Compatible with Canon EOS DSLR cameras.
