I have owned Canon, Vivitar and Tamron lenses, based upon continued good experience this one is another in my bag.

I almost uniformly use an external spot and/or incident light meter and manual settings when I an not taking 'snapshots'. The lack of a constant F stop requires a guess at the actual F stop. It's too bad no makers offer constant F stop ZOOM lenses for APS cameras. There are such lenses, but only for full frame cameras at a much higher price.

I was really pleased with this lens for my Canon Rebel XT. I originally thought I was going to have to buy a new lens hood, but in fact, the lens comes with its own lens hood for attachment. I needed a portrait lens that had a wide range of zoom (55-200mm), but nothing with wide field (28mm). I got more than I bargained for as it came with a free lens hood. The other thing is that since this lens is specifically designed for digital cameras, the image sharpness was a heck of a lot better than competitive brands -- even at 1600 ISO in low light. No, it doesn't have image stabilization, but that's OK. I didn't buy this lens for wildlife photography or shooting distant objects, but for portraiture to blur out backgrounds and for sharpness. I normally buy lenses with 58mm apertures, but thankfully I had a step up ring from 52mm-58mm (this lens is 52mm, so be aware before you buy it). The only con is that the autofocus is NOISY! All-in-all I love this lens!

I bought this lens for my Canon XS. My family & I went on vacation & I used it more than the 18-55mm kit lens. The pictures turned out very sharp & in good focus. It's a good lens for what I paid. Also, I like the size & weight so it is easily hand-held.

I never take off this lens. I am very happy with it but I kinda wish it were a 3.5 for sharpness in lowere light, but overall happy. Love my camera and lens

This is a great little lens! If you want decent quality for a small price, this is the lens.

This has become my favorite zoom lens, I use at least three out of the bag.

My only negative, this is a macro lens, there is nothing in the instructions on how to set up for macro, trying to auto focus on anything close doesn't work. [...]

I've had this lens for several months. I use it with a Canon 30D. The image quality for a lens this inexpensive is very pleasing. Don't expect perfection from anything at this price range, but dollar for dollar, it's an ideal lens for general shooting. The range is good, as it picks up right where my standard kit zoom leaves off. I don't have any of the focusing speed issues that I've seen reported elsewhere. The only downside is that manual focusing is a challenge with the tiny ring at the end of the lens and the lack of any dampening. But, hey, I'd rather see them skimp a little on the mechanics in return for good optical quality. [...] it's a great lens.

This lens has been everything that I wanted to extend the range of the standard lens on the Canon Digital XT. I've used it to document programs in an auditorium, scenics, portraits, close-ups of flowers and on and on. It has worked well in every situation.

Use it on a RebelXT. Do a lot of Northwest photograpy where I hike in and have to travel light. Also very good portait lens for the grandkids when you want a picture and can't get too close. Appears to focus very well even in low light. Tamron made this a digital specific lens and knew what they were doing. I will be looking at their wide angle lens in the future. No negatives so far. Does not have the f-stops shown but normal in this type of lens.

Smooth operating zoom

This has become my favorite zoom lens, I use at least three out of the bag.
Tamron 55-200mm Di II Zoom. The perfect next lens for your digital camera. This amazingly lightweight, compact telephoto zoom lens, is the perfect lens to use in addition to the one that came with your digital camera. Capture the smiles you love up close with a powerful zoom lens.
This is a telephoto zoom for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras that covers the focal length range equivalent to 85-310mm when converted to a 35mm format. The lens will allow owners of digital SLRs fitted with standard zoom lenses to easily enjoy the professional-looking pulling & compression effects of telephoto lenses.
Designed for exclusive use on digital cameras, the image circle is smaller, resulting in a compact package measuring 83.0mm (3.3"),accepting a 52mm standard filter & weighing a mere 10.4oz.
The 55-200mm zoom lens realizes a Minimum Focus Distance) of 37.4" over the entire zoom range, the top level of the closest focusing distance among tele-zoom lenses. Since the maximum magnification ratio at f=200mm is 1:3.5, you can enjoy easy & convenient close-up photography.
As the lens employs a 9-blade almost circular diaphragm construction, it provides naturally blurred background effects when an out-of-focus effect is desired. Such effects are done by using the shallow depth of field of a telephoto lens or in close-up photography, exploiting the outstanding specifications of 0.95m MFD over the entire zoom range & 1:3.5 maximum magnification ratio.
The AF55-200mm zoom lens features an entirely new optical design for optimizing the overall distribution of optical power while reducing various aberrations to absolute minimum & achieving remarkable downsizing at the same time.
In addition, an LD, Low Dispersion glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis & lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor to enhance the optical quality. As a result, the lens provides outstanding optical performance over the entire zoom range.
The zoom lens uses a new optical system designed to confine the changing angles of incidences of light rays reaching the imager within a certain scope over the entire image field by considering the effects of variances due to zooming. Peripheral light fall-off is minimized compared with conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery. The lens provides high image quality resolution, contrast & flatness of image field.
By the employment of Internal Surface Coatings & multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting & flare due to reflections that occur when light enters through the front element & reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.
Improvements have been made to the external design & the lens features a super hybrid mount made of highly durable, lightweight engineering plastic precisely molded around a highly durable stainless steel core.
