Review Summary

I purchased this filter after seeing great reviews for it on Youtube, it was consistently rated better than the more expensive filters, it was not until after the purchase that I noted in a couple of reviews that these filters although excellent are somewhat fragile, in one review it was recommended that the filter only be used in studio settings. I am still happy with the purchase, I am a still photographer that uses these filters in landscape photography often in somewhat harsh environments, mountain streams and waterfalls. Because I use this with Canon wide angle lenses I had purchased 105mm filters to go on lenses with 77mm filter threads using a step up ring to avoid vignetting, to solve the fragility problem I purchased somewhat inexpensive 105mm UV filters to protect the ND filters from the elements, I also purchased lens caps because Sigma makes a great lens cap for about $10 that fits the filters perfectly. I use a rear UV filter to further protect when not in use.

While many of today's high-end cinema cameras lack a built-in low-pass or IR cut filter to mimic the human eye's data reception, they often require a stronger ND filter to manage exposure due to their heightened light sensitivity. This can lead to infrared pollution, a problem that many camera manufacturers suggest mitigating with an IRND filter. However, many existing IRND filters can cause unwanted side effects like color shifting. The Tokina PRO IRND 1.2 Filter - 4 Stops, a product of Kenko Tokina's innovative Accu-ND Technology, offers a solution to these challenges.
This high-quality, durable filter precisely controls the amount of light entering the lens without affecting color, thanks to its revolutionary design that stabilizes color transmittance throughout the visible spectrum. Unlike other filters, the Tokina PRO IRND filter minimizes the need for continual white balance adjustments during a shoot and subsequent color shift corrections in post-production.
Available in both round and square/rectangular styles, the Tokina PRO IRND filter features an ND vapor deposition coating. The round filter has this coating on both sides of the glass, creating a truly neutral, high-precision filter. The square/rectangular filter, on the other hand, has the coating sandwiched between two layers of glass, allowing for repeated re-polishing if scratched, thereby extending the filter's lifespan.
The Tokina PRO IRND filter stands out in the market with its unique manufacturing process. Instead of cutting the near infrared from a specific wavelength, it suppresses infrared up to 1200nm, effectively eliminating infrared pollution. This method of suppression, as opposed to cutting, is less likely to produce unwanted color shifts, making the Tokina PRO IRND filter a reliable and effective choice for professional cinematographers seeking better control over their image quality.
