Very good but . . .

When I owned this lens it was a Nikon mount. I was very pleased with the purchase at the time but later sold the lens because I was not yet shooting digital and just didn't use it a lot. I'm now shooting PJ and actions sports regularly so a 300 is a regular part of my set. In actuality I would give this lens 3.5 stars. I no longer shoot Nikon gear (now shoot Canon) but I would offer this guideline to anyone buying glass regardless of your camera manufacturer: always buy the very best that you can afford. At the top of the scale this will almost always be lenses made by your camera's maker. If you can't afford Canon or Nikon's eqivalent in this lens--which would be understandable since they cost twice as much--then this lens is a good compromise. Construction wise it is quite good. The sharpness of the lens is also good but not as good as either Nikon or Canon 300 2.8. If you are a part-time pro and will be making money from your photography I would highly recommend financing the Nikon or Canon versions. If you're just starting out then this will be adequate until you are earning enough to take the next step up. If you are shooting still images such as nature then then you will probably be satisfied with this lens for a long time. However, if you are trying to track fast moving objects like in action sports or photojournalism you will eventually want to go with the Nikon or Canon equivalents. For the money, however, this is a very nice lens.

About Tokina 300mm f/2.8 AT-X 300 AF PRO Telephoto Lens with Case & Hood for Nikon AF

The AT-X 300 AF PRO lens features the exclusive "Focus Clutch Mechanism.", a signature of the Tokina PRO series lenses, which provides a faster, smoother auto focus operation and a smooth manual focus action not normally found in today's auto focus lenses.

As with all the lenses in Tokina's AT-X AF series, the AT-X 300 AF PRO is constructed using all aluminum lens barrels and a chrome-plated, brass mount plate. The first lens group is made from two elements of high quality SD (super low dispersion) glass that minimizes the secondary spectrum caused by chromatic aberration. These lenses use FK01 and FK02 optical materials which gives them SD (APO) qualities.

The AT-X 300 AF PRO lens also features a patented IRF, Internal Rear Focus system. This system moves smaller lens groups within the lens barrel, which is useful for long telephoto lens designs. The IRF system has a number of advantages including faster auto focusing and more compact lens design.
